Waylon DeCoteau (Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa) is a fourth-year medical student at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. For Waylon’s project he partnered with fellow Healer Community Cohort Tarlynn Nichole Tonepahhote and Claire Erikson to facilitate a round table discussion at the Dakota Public Health Conference. They presented their experiences in clinical and academic spaces as medical students, and their findings in a research paper; To Welcome Healing. At this conference, they discussed their path to medicine, their experiences as Native medical students, issues with training, and recommendations for improved and shared spaces amongst colleagues. The session was attended by many different healthcare professionals from administration, nursing, therapists, educators and public health workers. The intent was to share information that helped with recruiting and maintaining welcoming relationships with Native American students, staff, coworkers and community members. Waylon’s reflections: “No matter what field you are in, you’re needed and many people will always cheer for you and hope that you are always happy. Collectively, we all are working towards beautiful things, and I think that knowing there are a lot of going through the same struggles is helpful. A role model of mine says, ‘etateya naji’ meaning to stand in the wind; face the struggle for your people.” Read more about our outgoing cohort’s projects at the link in our bio: https://www.wearehealers.org/healers-community-circle #WeAreHealers #NativeExcellence #NativeMed #Healthcare #healer #PublicHealth

Tarlynn Nichole Tonepahhote (Kiowa and Oneida) is a fourth-year medical student at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. @tarlynn.tonepahhote Taralynn’s proposed project didn’t work out, so she pivoted and worked to inspire Native youth to pursue careers in medicine. Tarlynn and fellow HCC student Waylon DeCoteau tabled at the annual UND powwow alongside the Indians into Medicine program where they got to interact with Native youth all the way up to elders who were interested in their hands-on activity, which included a brain model and intubation practice materials. Tarlynn also assisted in a project conducted by a fellow classmate called “To Welcome Healing”. This was a unique opportunity to help with both a poster and round table discussion at the North Dakota Public Health Conference. Through this project, she was able to work with her colleagues Waylon DeCoteau, Megan Corn and Claire Erickson to chat with those at the conference about their medical journey, issues with training and suggest recommendations for better interactions in a medical setting. Tarlynn’s reflections: “Never give up. There are going to be times where you may want to quit but remember, you are on this journey for a reason and will become the best healer for our people. There are many looking up to you and wishing you well on our path so try to hold your head up high and know that your community, ancestors and family are proud!” “As a future Family Medicine physician, I hold community and family close to my heart. They are the reasons I have pursued this field of medicine and what drives me to do the best that I can. I wouldn't be where I am without my family and community and I hope one day to give back as much as they have helped me on my journey.” Read more about our outgoing cohort’s projects at the link in our bio: https://www.wearehealers.org/healers-community-circle #WeAreHealers #NativeExcellence #NativeMed #Healthcare #healer #PublicHealth

Tamee Livermont (Oglala Lakota) @tameeeloise is a third-year medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School-Duluth Campus. Tamee’s project was to work with a newly contracted tribal health clinic near her home (western South Dakota), the Oyate Health Center, on a project to increase traditional healing services at the clinic for her community. Tamee’s reflection:: “The work you do is for a purpose—we are living the dreams of our ancestors. At the same time, it can be exhausting to feel up against systems that are impossible to change, and those that we don’t see the interest of our communities considered. This makes community, support, and environments of good energy necessary for the sustainability of this work. The We Are Healers HCC staff and community are just that. They provide support that is led by Indigenous values, is student-centered, and grounded in traditional ways of being in relationship with one another.” Read more about our outgoing cohort’s projects at the link in our bio: https://www.wearehealers.org/healers-community-circle #WeAreHealers #NativeExcellence #NativeMed #Healthcare #healer #PublicHealth

Sarah Rasmussen (Quileute / Makah) is a third-year medical student at the University of Washington School of Medicine-Alaska Campus. Sarah’s project was focused on outreach to Native students interested in healthcare careers. Sarah wanted to share with them about the different healthcare career options available and what the educational pathway to those careers looks like, specifically being able to speak to the journey to medical school. Sarah worked with high schools and tribal colleges to speak with students. She created a presentation that includes job responsibilities, specific testing/exams needed, schools in PNW region that offer these majors/programs, and specific scholarships/support organizations. Sarah’s reflections: “Seeing someone like yourself in healthcare roles is what inspired me to pursue medicine and apply to medical school. I think opening those doors and showing others that this is possible for us and we can be successful and our full selves in this space is so needed. Native students can excel in these areas and be leaders and I hope to help them navigate the pathway and show them we have a whole community rooting for us and supporting us.” Read more about our outgoing cohort’s projects at the link in our bio: https://www.wearehealers.org/healers-community-circle #WeAreHealers #NativeExcellence #NativeMed #Healthcare #healer #PublicHealth

Jasmine (Pascua Yaqui) is a third-year medical student at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. Jasmine’s project for the Healers Community Cohort was to advance and promote a traditional foods garden at Oregon Health & Science University. Her goals were to collaborate with the Northwest Native American Center of Excellence to maintain and bolster a space for Indigenous learners and community members to gather while promoting First Foods practices. @jazzyymin @nativehealthohsu @ohsunews Jasmine’s reflections: “Indigenous visibility in higher education and healthcare matters. Incorporating a traditional foods garden into one of the biggest healthcare campuses in the state underscores the change we are bringing to places where our voices have long been drowned out. We are creating spaces to support one another and overcome barriers. We look to the past and to the people who came before to thank them for all their efforts. Now, we must continue building off previous work to promote Native health and representation within our healthcare institutions.” Read more about our outgoing cohort’s projects at the link in our bio. #WeAreHealers #NativeExcellence #NativeMed #Healthcare #healer #PublicHealth

Hailey Baker (Cherokee) is a third-year medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School-Duluth Campus. She was raised in the interior Alaska and is from a long bloodline of Cherokee nurses. She aspires to be an Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist with a research focus on birthing care in rural and Indigenous communities. Hailey’s advice: “Don’t be afraid to start - prior to 2022, I had zero health policy experience. In a little over a year, I found myself chairing a committee on Native health, as well as honored by the Association of Native American Medical Students for my work in Tribal health policy. Find mentors, peers, and others who can show you where to start and dive in! Our knowledge and experiences as Native people need to be in these spaces.” Read more from our 2023 cohort here: https://www.wearehealers.org/healers-community-circle-2023 (linked in bio). #WeAreHealers #NativeExcellence #NativeMed #Healthcare #healer #PublicHealth

As we approach the end of another transformative year, we reflect on the strides we've made and the lives we've touched through our shared commitment to fostering change. The Healers Community Circle has been at the forefront of supporting Native American medical students on their journey to becoming healthcare leaders, and we're reaching out to you, our valued supporters, as we wrap-up 2023. Here’s what one of our healers, Sarah Rasmussen-Rehkopf (Quileute|Makah), a third-year medical student had to say: “Instead of feeling alone, doing something no one in my family has ever done before, I’ve come to build and feel the support of our community with me. The support from We Are Healers allowed me to focus on community outreach and pathway building. I came to medical school to serve my community and being able to stay connected with them and form new connections while on rotations has helped me feel like I’m able to be my authentic self and stay grounded during times when school has been especially challenging.” By supporting our work at We Are Healers, you play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare by empowering Native American medical students to become compassionate and skilled practitioners. How You Can Make a Difference: Your financial support, no matter the size, makes a significant impact on the lives of these aspiring healers. Visit www.wearehealers.org/donate to contribute. This year Dr. Jacob Weasel, a citizen of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and a surgeon at Monument Health in Rapid City, has become the first Native American to summit Mount Everest. His expedition raised funds for his nonprofit, the Wopila Project, aiming to raise $100,000 to build a playground in Rapid City's Lakota Homes neighborhood and an additional $75,000 to fund three women's health centers in rural Nepal. Born in Gallup, New Mexico, and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Weasel and his family moved to Rapid City in 2018, where he began work as a trauma surgeon. Dr. Weasel and his wife, Lauren, have three children: sons Leighton and Judah, 15 and 13, and daughter Isabelle, who just turned 12. While mountain climbing is a sport of glory for many, Dr. Weasel really wants to set an example, especially for Native youth. "[I] really want [the expedition] to serve as an inspiration for the native kids, that whatever their dreams are for their life, they're equally capable as anybody else to dream big dreams and see them come to reality. That's really what my heart is through this whole thing," he said. "If it weren't for the fact that no native person has ever summitted, I probably wouldn't be doing this. But I feel like there needs to be somebody first to do it, so why not me?" A message from friends at WeAreHealers• @wearehealers In medicine, every minority group has seen increases in medical students except for Native Americans. Native physicians represented only 0.56% of active physicians in 2016, and that number does not appear to be increasing. We Are Healers is working to change this by helping Native youth to pursue careers in medicine, connecting them to resources and advising academic health institutions on how to recruit and retain Native students. This #IndigenousPeoplesDay, consider making a donation to We Are Healers to further our work with Native medical students and together we can increase the number of Native physicians, nurses, dentists and more!
