I was passing the tree outside the other day, looked down and saw this old fella slowly staggering up the grevillea robusta. I knew...it was time. Time for this cicada to shed the old, ill fitting shell and emerge fresh and gorgeous with wings ready to entice a mate. I had never, ever seen this before but have been told it is an amazing privilege. I could just see it out my workshop window...just. Now...I had work to do, jewellery to make and this one climbed high up the tree. Too high for me to watch the whole process of emergence but...I did get some photos. I had a ladder but on the slope it was a bit dodgy. Once the cicada emerged, it was a few vulnerable hours sitting on and then beside the old shell, waiting for its wings to dry and harden enough to fly. They flapped around in the breeze like sheer fabric. All the while, this grand new insect was art huge risk of being plucked off by a hungry bird. Have a looksee at stage one - the movie- and I'll post some photos of how things went.
