I'm joining in with this week's #8brilliantbooks with @mrsbrownsbookbox. This week's theme was so tricky to narrow down to 8. I've worked in early years for many years now. I started in preschool spent 10 years there, moved on to a one to one job in a reception class, followed her up to year one, moved and now I'm back in reception as a TA. Now the books I've chosen aren't brand new, most of these are from my nursery days where I had much more say in what books we bought and read. These were books that were read again and again and were popular with children and staff alike, all except That's Not My Story which I found in the library but would be so good for storytime and linked activities. A girl reads lots of traditional tales but none of the characters look like her and she definitely doesn't want to kiss a prince so she decides to make up her own story. A Squiggly Story A boy wants to write a story like his sister but doesn't know how to write letters so he uses pictures instead. Chalk, a wordless book where 3 children find some chalk that brings drawings to life, all is fun till one kid draws a T-Rex!! These were both great at getting children mark marking and using their imaginations to tell stories and record them. Little Glow, A beautiful book that teaches children about different celebrations and festivals. Jack Frost, I love this story and read it every winter. I managed to time it right this year and read it before the first frost. The next day we had so many excited children coming to tell me that they Jack Frost had visited. The Perfect Fit, I was just telling my teacher about this book today, we are looking at shapes next week in maths. Not only brilliant for shape recognition but a lovely story of inclusion. Allie All Along, A boy tries various techniques to calm down his sister, each one calms her down a tiny bit until she's back to her normal self. We encouraged the children to use them when they had big feelings. Pirate Mums, What kid doesn't like a pirate story? It also happens that the child in the story has two mums, so a great way to show children love is love and not all families look the same.

Before penning “If You Were Not You”, I had always assumed that the writing and publication process would be much the same as my day job, working on programmes…Do a draft, get feedback, do lots of versions and eventually finalise. However, to my surprise and amazement, I wrote If You Were Not You, in its published state, during one, lovely blue-skied dog walk! It was fast and straight from the heart, rather than structured and clinical, which I suppose makes total sense, given the inspiration behind it 👶🏽 I tentatively shared the story with two of my closest friends (pictured!), expecting them to tear it apart, but, to my amazement, they didn’t! In fact, they asked me what I was waiting for and set me the challenge of getting it published! So that’s what I did! One of the earliest written versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears was authored by Eleanor Mure in 1831. In this version a group of three bear friends get fed up of living in the woods and decide to live in a more civilised human house. When their new neighbour, an elderly woman, calls round to greet them they decline to meet her. The old woman takes offence to this and decides to break into their home, where she eats the food, breaks furniture and generally makes a horrible mess. When the bears return they decide to punish her by burning and drowning her. When these methods fail they fling her on the steeple of St Paul's Cathedral and dance to celebrate. In 1850 Joseph Cundell rewrote the story with a little girl called Silver-Hair, as he thought there were already enough stories featuring old women. Yes/No is NOT a book from a famous illustrator about opposites and so we have decided to not review a book this month. OUR NON REVIEW We hated this book. Jan Pieńkowski is a BAD illustrator and it is easy to see why so many people dislike him. He didn’t do any of the drawings for the Meg and Mog series (we REALLY disliked Meg and Mog, by the way) and his black and white illustrations for this book are just as ugly, uninteresting and boring as the ones he didn’t do for that. This book went on FAR too long and what is the point of a book like this anyway, when it is aimed at really old people? We would NEVER say that this book and the other titles in the series (which are NOT available at Gobbledybooks) are miniature masterpieces of design and perfect for introducing early concepts to very young children. We would never say that. So whatever you do, don’t buy a copy of this book, because at £2.50 it is so expensive that you won’t have any money to spend on anything else, ever again. Books by the same author that aren’t in the same series are - Weather/Shapes/Colours/Numbers/Faces/Homes/Food/Time and Wheels.
