A little look at my notes notebook for May, as well as a sneak peek of some digital wallpapers that will be available this month! Patrons got a little look at the first few wallpaper designs earlier today so I thought I would share some here too. I started out only knowing what color I wanted to use this month - Mild Cyan from @zebrapen_usa - and came up with a theme from there. Space and stars seemed like something fairly simple, but cute, and it's so relaxing to draw these decorations and wallpapers. I had a great time getting started on these last night, and am excited to work on them a bit more today. There will be quite a few wallpapers with this theme, which Patrons of all tiers will have full access to, or you can check out Ko-fi, where there will be a few up for free, or the full set for a small fee (usually around $4 for unlimited access). I simplified my free book-making programme for younger kids! Fewer pages, simpler instructions. Working on the abridged version of this with more scaffolding for next month. Incase you’re a new follower: I made a picture-book-making programme for kids, parents and teachers. And it’s free. I’ve been making books with kids for many years now. It is a challenging process to put it mildly – idea generation; pacing; structure; pushing through once the initial excitement of brainstorming and intros are complete; the physical binding of a solid dummy book that won’t fall apart after a few reads… it is very, very difficult to finish making a picture book. Add in the challenges of trying to make books in a mainstream classroom – class sizes; the insecurity of older students not wanting to put themselves out there creatively; kids at low writing levels getting left behind or the more confident ones get bored. Story Blocks for Picture Books aims to address these issues and provide a framework for parents, kids and teachers to find success in making books with their kids at home or in the classroom. I’ll be adding weekly YouTube tutorials (3-5 minute videos) to explain each part of the Story Blocks process to further assist understanding (vid 1 has just gone up, link in bio). This current version of Story Blocks is designed for making picture books with 8-11-year-olds, but I have plans to make versions for younger kids and for comic stories. And like I said, all completely free. My gift to a kind world that has given me so much that I can barely believe it sometimes. ❤️ All you need to do to download the programme is to sign up to my newsletter (link in bio) and it will be delivered straight your inbox once you’ve confirmed your email address. Want zijn verhaal is eentje dat ook bij mij al heel wat tranen heeft los gemaakt. Niet alleen van verdriet, maar ook van het lachen met de dingen die hij deed. Wat een gekke week! Ik heb het heel druk gehad, en nu doe ik een hele korte samenvatting. De boekpresentatie was heel leuk - super gezellig publiek met veel oude en nieuwe vrienden, fantastisch locatie in het Park zelf en geweldige presentaties van Nienke (Stichting het Park), Juf Ivanna (Het Landje) en Said Kasmi (Wethouder Onderwijs, Cultuur en Evenementen), die heeft ook de eerste exemplaar in ontvangst genomen. Daarnaast heb ik een radio interview voor Chris Natuurlijk van Radio Rijnmond gedaan (link in bio) en als ‘Tekenkoning van het Park’ op Koningsdag gestaan. Er is nu al een tweede druk in de post gekomen en de eerste recensies zijn binnen, en ze zijn erg goed! Oh ja, en je kan signeerde boeken bij de Kleine Kapitein halen! Super blij dat het boek is zo mooi ontvangen :)
Tegenwoordig lijkt het soms alsof de wereld kapot is. Er is zoveel haat, zoveel angst, en er zijn zoveel problemen dat je soms niet weet waar je moet beginnen om ze op te lossen. Dit is iets waar volwassenen mee worstelen, maar ook veel kinderen krijgen mee dat er zaken niet goed lopen en dat het belangrijk is om hiervoor in actie te komen. Amanda Gorman, bekend Amerikaans spoken word-artiest schreef vorig jaar samen met illustrator Christian Robinson een prachtig prentenboek.
