We’re in the final countdown for WNP’s 25th Birthday Bash on Wednesday, May 15th highlighting the history of a bygone but not forgotten neighborhood theater, The Bridge, at a Richmond District gem that is thriving: @4startheater We hope you’ll join us for a live recording of the “Outside Lands San Francisco” podcast featuring co-host @amandabartlett_ of @sfgate and drag legend @thepeacheschrist! While managing The Bridge in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Peaches (aka Joshua Grannell) launched a late-night movie series and drag spectacle called “Midnight Mass” that we’ll explore at this prom-themed fundraiser with prizes, and cake, and more! Aside from chatting with Peaches about her time in the neighborhood, we’ll share what we’ve uncovered in our research of the theater’s history. The Bridge was a major part of the neighborhood and has a long history of innovative managers like Joshua who lived nearby and presented epic programs that garnered worldwide attention. But you have to buy tickets to hear us spill the tea! See link in above in profile to reserve your seat today. That’s the thing about San Francisco history: you research one place, get to know someone new, and all of a sudden the city and your neighborhood make way more sense. We hope you’ll help us do this work by joining us at the 4 Star on Wednesday. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser support our 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Thanks for being with us, history friends! #SFHistory #SanFranciscoHistory #SanFrancisco #History #OpenSFHistory #Events #Nonprofit #Fundraiser

You’re looking east near Eureka at the Twin Peaks Tunnel under construction #OnThisDay in 1915. We know what you’re thinking: hey, that’s not in the western neighborhoods! Indeed, but this is the tunnel that opened up the west side to the rest of San Francisco. The Twin Peaks Tunnel promised a 20-minute commute by streetcar from the west portal of the tunnel (hence, a neighborhood named West Portal) to downtown. Based on that promise, companies like Newell-Murdoch, Mason-McDuffie, and Fernando Nelson & Sons began clearing Sutro Forest to create residence parks like Forest Hill and St. Francis Wood. Although construction was underway in 1915, its opening was delayed by World War I restrictions on building materials. The tunnel finally opened on February 3, 1918, and the rest (as they say) was history. Refugees in Dolores Park gather and move what belongings they could salvage as horse-drawn wagons deliver essential supplies and the city burns in the distance #OnThisDay in 1906 after the earthquake. It’s one thing to see fires burning and buildings crumble, but to see this disaster from the perspective of survivors is something else entirely. Life stopped and their city was never the same again. And although we commemorate the anniversary on one day, annually, the destabilizing reality of this calamity played out for days/weeks/years. We think about that a lot in April. A couple take in the view of Seal Rocks from the terrace behind the Cliff House circa 1915. This part of the west side is instantly recognizable even if elements in this frame are very different today. That’s because there’s a lot of history here and we’re hosting a history walk of the Cliff House and Sutro Baths to let you in on the secrets of this very special place. EVENT THIS WEEKEND. Join us on Saturday, April 6th at 10:00am for a guided tour led by retired National Park Service ranger John Martini! We’ll venture around the Cliff House, walking past this exact view, to learn the history of San Francisco’s most incendiary landmark. Then we’ll descend into the ruins of Sutro Baths to visit mysterious tunnels through Point Lobos and so much more. John literally wrote the book on the Baths and his tours are the absolute best! Tickets are $15 for WNP members and $25 for non-members. See link in profile to register by selecting the “Upcoming WNP Events” button. FREE UPCOMING VIRTUAL EVENT OpenSFHistory was launched 10 years ago to share the work of San Francisco photographers of the past—from amateur snapshots to the widely reproduced work of professionals. Now, in celebration of our anniversary, we’re launching a virtual series called “OpenSFHistory Photography Forum” that celebrates and shares the work of our favorite contemporary photographers! Join us via Zoom on Thursday, March 28th at 6:30pm for an illustrated talk in which photographers Dave Glass and Yameen will chat with WNP Executive Director Nicole Meldahl about their work and their connection to the west side. Photos taken today create the historic archives of tomorrow. We hope you’ll join this FREE EVENT to learn more about OpenSFHistory and the photography that is happening all around us. Please register in advance via Eventbrite using the Linktree above in profile. Have questions? Please DM our Director of Programs, Chelsea Sellin.
