An end of an era. Rolling on here is the last tram to ever run in Perth, tram 66. For about half a century, trams were an integral part of transportation in WA. Back before the age of cars, the only ways to get around the city were either to walk, ride a bike, take some form of horse powered transportation, or most conveniently, take the tram — but only up until 1958, when Perth’s tramway network would be closed due to competition from buses and cars. But now 66 runs again! 66 and a fleet of other historic trams are now lovingly run here in Whiteman Park.

Trees feature prominently in the backdrop of many #WWI soldier's photographs in our John Ambuehl Collection. Ambuehl was stationed at training camps in Indiana, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Long Island during the fall and winter of 1917-1918, and these photos capture his time there. Ambuehl wrote to his sister that he would often take pictures of his fellow soldiers and sell them the prints as a way to make money, but he would also send home photos of himself and his friends. In honor of #ArborDay, I wanted to share how many soldiers loved having trees in their background to send home to family. Charles A. Tenney was a photographer based in Winona in the late 1800s. He and his partners photographed many scenes in and around Winona, as well as notable sights up in Minneapolis or over in Wisconsin. Many of his photographs were distributed as stereographs, and when they were viewed through a stereoscope, they would look three-dimensional. Some of his pictures were quite dramatic, thanks to the unique landscape of southeastern Minnesota. This view of a man seated on top of a rock formation in the bluffs on Lake Winona is one of our favorites at MDL. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire destroyed nearly 500 city blocks and left approximately 250,000 people homeless. A massive effort was undertaken to feed and house many of those displaced by the disaster in twenty-six refugee camps erected throughout the city. Twenty-one of the camps were run by the US Army and were highly-organized, providing shelter, food, clothing, and medical care for their residents. They also reflected the prejudices of the time with Chinese residents of San Francisco forced into a remote, segregated camp in the Presidio. Eventually, as the city rebuilt and San Franciscans moved back into permanent homes, the camps emptied out and were dismantled.
At 10:03am on a rainy April 25, 1893, the Liberty Bell set off from Philadelphia by train on its way to the World’s Fair in Chicago. Shortly after noon, the train carrying the bell pulled into the Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Lancaster. It was greeted by a large crowd “packed in like bunches of tobacco," according to the Intelligencer Journal newspaper of the day. Each Thursday this Spring take a look into the past with these historic scenes from the Richest Hill on Earth! This week's photo depicts the aftermath of the fire which consumed the American Theatre at 25/27 West Park Street and Schwartz Men's Store at 29/31 West Park Street on February 1st of 1950. It was a particularly cold winter and all the water pumped onto the structures quickly froze, creating a blizzard like scene in the aftermath. This was the second theater fire within a 6 month period, with the Park Theatre meeting a similar fate in the Fall of 1949. The fire was determined to have started in a mechanical room at the front of the building and spread to the projection room which contained an abundance of nitrate film. It is said there were 100 foot flames when the blaze broke through the structures roof. Today, the Park Street Walking Mall is located where the American once was, while Gloss the Green Beauty Counter is where Schwartz once existed. Did you know that Dysart et al's Town Hall was built in 1897? Though it's seen additions over the years, the main part of the building has changed relatively little from its early days. In the early 20th century, the upper floor of the building was often used as a community auditorium and performance space. Today is National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, so we're bringing back this post about local rural school bus driver Edwin Suprey! Edwin Suprey drove school bus to bring students living in the Forada area to school in Alexandria, MN. “In the winter, bad weather was a constant threat. It seemed that every blizzard started on Saturday and continued until late Sunday afternoon. Dad, knowing that no plow would be there until sometime the first of the week, would start shoveling at the garage door. Friends and parents would join him along the way and shovel until a path was clear to Highway 29. Sometimes it became almost a tunnel. The most difficult and trying times were when the wind started blowing and snow flying again late Sunday night. No matter how bad the roads and the blizzards, few Mondays ever came that the bus didn’t make the trip to school in some way.” Working as a bus driver was a bit different in those days, especially in the hard years of the 1930s. Students’ families were responsible for paying $4 per month per child to ride the bus to Alexandria, and Edwin Suprey was responsible for purchasing and maintaining his own school bus. Not every family could afford the bus fare, but Mr. Suprey never turned away a child. Sometimes, families paid in other ways – beef, pork, chicken, or other goods or services. “Cold was often a problem, however, with the little ones crying because their feet were cold. The older girls would rub the little feet and comfort the children. I remember one bus which had a heater. It got so hot that if feet touched it the overshoes would melt. Children were warned to keep their feet off the heaters by parents who did not wish to purchase additional overshoes. The temperature a couple of feet from the heater was icy. The Turku Cathedral, a prominent landmark, overlooked the scene. The area served as a hub for trade and commerce, with boats constantly navigating the river. This grand portrait of Princess Alice of Battenberg, great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, was commissioned following the success of the artist’s first solo exhibition in England at the Fine Art Society in London in 1907. King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra attended the opening and immediately commissioned a portrait of their daughter Princess Victoria as well as their own. The transformation of State Street in Lower Manhattan, from the 19th to early 20th century. One of the most desirable residential areas in the 18th and early 19th century, the area fell out of favor as the city expanded ever northward. These once stylish homes (seen in Image 1) were repurposed for commercial use in the late 19th century, before being replaced entirely by taller, more imposing (and more economically expedient) buildings in the early 20th century (seen in Image 2). There are some old books in the library’s collection, but this is definitely one of the oldest. A Collection of Poems in Six Volumes by Several Hands was printed in London in 1766 and most likely acquired by KCKPL in the 1890s before a dedicated library building even existed. The six-volume set was last inventoried in 1936 and still has the checkout card pocket in the back. Don’t look for it in the catalog. It was removed from circulation long ago and is now stored in the Kansas Collection.
