Tea plant or tea tree 茶树 (Camellia Sinensis), a species of evergreen shrub or small tree whose leaves & leaf buds are used to produce tea. It is a flowering plants in the family Theaceae. Not to confuse with Melaleuca alternifolia ~ source of tea tree oil, or Leptospermum scoparium ~ New Zealand tea tree. There are 2 major varieties grown today, white tea, yellow tea, green tea, oolong, dark tea (pu-erh tea); and black tea. All are harvested for process differently to attain varies levels of oxidation. Kukicha (twig tea) is also harvested from tea tree but uses twigs & stems rather than leaves. Native to East Asia, the India Subcontinent & Southeast Asia, but it is today cultivated across the world in tropical & subtropical regions. It is usually trimmed to below 2 m when cultivated for its leaves. It has a strong taproot. The flowers are yellow-white, 2.5 - 4 cm in diameter with 7 or 8 petals. The leaves are 4-15 cm long. Fresh leaves contain about 4% caffeine & other compounds including theobromine. The young, light-green leaves are preferred for tea production; they have short, white hairs on the underside. Older leaves are dark green. Different leaf ages produce differing tea qualities, as their chemical compositions are different. Usually, the tip (bud) & the 1st two to three leaves are harvested for processing. The seeds can be pressed to yield tea oil, a sweetish seasoning & cooking oil. Although health benefits are assumed throughout history of using tea as common beverage, no high-quality evidence shows significant benefits. Pitstop at a roadside stall nearby Lata Iskandar, Cameron Highlands while on our way back to KL. The stall is operated by a lady indigenous. There were wild orchids, fern shoots, bamboo shoots & Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia). The lady didn't speak much & very camera shy. She said all the plants are gathered by her family from the forest. Visiting a Chrysanthemums farm 菊花园 in Ringlet, Cameron Highlands before descending. Also call mums, Chrysanths are flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. They are native to Asia & northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia. Countless horticultural varieties & cultivars exist around the world. Wild Chrysanthemum Taxa are herbaceous perennial plants or subshrubs. They have alternately arranged leaves divided into leaflets with toothed or occasionally smooth edges. The compound inflorescence is an array of several flower heads, or sometimes a solitary head. The head has a base covered in layers of phyllaries. The simple row of ray florets is white, yellow, or red; many horticultural specimens have been bred to bear many rows of ray florets in a great variety of colors. The disc florets of wild taxa are yellow. The fruit is a ribbed achene. They are one of the prettiest varieties of perennials that start blooming early in the autumn. It was first cultivated in China as a flowering herb as early as the 15th century BC. Over 500 cultivars had been recorded by 1630. By year 2014 it was estimated to be over 20,000 cultivars in the world & about 7,000 cultivars in China. Varieties of vegetables, melon & fruits at MARDI Agrotechnology Park in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands. There are purple carrot 紫萝卜, winter melon 冬瓜, egg plant 小茄子, brinjal 茄子, kale 芥兰, lettuce 生菜, cabbage 包菜, long beans 长豆, tomatoes 番茄 & etc. MARDI Cameron Highland's Stations was established by the British in 1925. It was known as the Federal Experimental Station. Tea was first introduced in Malaysia in 1925 & these early tea bushes are growing healthy at the station until today. The first tea factory built in 1935 is still capable of processing black tea. The Agrotechnology Park MARDI Cameron Highlands is located within the station & was officiated by His Royal Highness DYMM the Sultan of Pahang in 2003. Since then, about 65,000 visitors visit the park each year. The Agrotech Park is only 1km away from the town of Tanah Rata. Creeping Woodsorrel 酢浆草 (Oxalis Corniculata) at MARDI Agrotechnology Park in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands. The plant resembles the common yellow woodsorrel, Oxalis Stricta. It is a somewhat delicate-appearing, low-growing, herbaceous plant in the family Oxalidaceae. It has a narrow, creeping stem that readily roots at the nodes. The trifoliate leaves are subdivided into three rounded leaflets & resemble a clover in shape. Some varieties have green leaves, while others have purple. The leaves have inconspicuous stipules at the base of each petiole. The fruit is a narrow, cylindrical capsule, 1-2 cm long & 1 mm long. Mature seed capsules can open explosively to disperse seeds up to 4 m away. Pollen is about 34 microns in diameter. This species commonly found in south-eastern Asia. It was first described by Linnaeus in 1753 using specimens from Italy, and it seems to have been introduced to Italy from the east before 1500. It is now cosmopolitan in its distribution & is regarded as a weed. The leaves of woodsorrel are quite edible, with a tangy taste of lemons. A drink can be made by infusing the leaves in hot water for about 10 minutes, sweetening then chilling. The entire plant is rich in vitamin C. The stems reaching up to 18 m length. Its local name is Tayabak. A member of the Fabaceae, closely related to beans. They are pollinated by birds & bats. The pale green foliage consists of three leaflets. The claw-shaped flowers are carried in pendent trusses of 75 or more flowers & can reach as much as 3 m long. The turquoise flower color is similar to some forms of the minerals turquoise & jade, varying from blue-green to mint green. The short, oblong, fleshy seedpods are up to 15 cm long & contain up to 12 seeds. It grows beside streams in damp forests, or in ravines. The inflorescences are only produced by mature vines. Each individual bloom resembles a stout-bodied butterfly with folded wings. They have evolved to a shape to allow pollinated by bats that hangs upside down on the inflorescence. The flowers are also visited by wasps & home butterflies. There are several other species, like the red jade vine, Mucuna Bennettii. Propagation has always been difficult. It is considered an endangered species due to the destruction of its habitat & the decrease of its natural pollinators. There seems to be a method of marcotting through mature woody stems. It is best planted in ground near a water source. The vine entwines itself through the trunk & branches of trees & the leaves spread over the canopy. It is a genus of carnivorous plant comprises about 170 species with numerous natural & cultivated hybrids. They are mostly found in the tropics, ranging from South China, Oceania, India & Sri Lanka. The greatest diversity occurs on Borneo, Sumatra & Philippines, with many endemic species. Many are of hot, humid, lowland areas. Majority are tropical montane plants, receiving warm days but cool to cold, humid nights year round. A few are considered tropical alpine, with cool days & nights near freezing. They are also named Monkey Cups as the monkeys drink rainwater from these plants. The species usually consist of a shallow root system & a prostrate or climbing stem, often up to 15 m or more, usually less than 1 cm diameter, few species are thicker. From the stems arise alternate, sword-shaped leaves with entire leaf margins. An extension of the tendril, which in some species aids in climbing, protrudes from the tip of the leaf. The pitcher starts as a small bud & gradually expands to form a globe or tube-shaped trap. The trap contains watery or syrupy fluids & is used to drown the prey. This fluid contains viscoelastic biopolymers which retain the insects within the traps. The fluid in pitchers is especially effective on winged insects. The trapping efficiency of this fluid remains high, even when significantly diluted by water. The lower part of the trap contains glands which absorb nutrients from captured prey. The upper inside part of the trap is a slick, waxy coating which makes the escape of its prey nearly impossible. Pelargonium zonale is an upright or scrambling shrub, normally growing to about 1 m in height but potentially up to 3 m in wild. Its stems are succulent, hairy when young becoming woody with age. The leaves often have a dark mark shaped like a horseshoe, giving rise to both the scientific & common name. The flowers are borne in an umbel; individual flowers are markedly zygomorphic. The petals vary from white through rose to red. The crown, which is about 3.5 centimeters in length, consists of five obcined slices, the top of which is formed in a thin, hollow spur clustered with a flower stem. The name Hairy Balls is an allusion to the swelling testicle-like follicles which are full of seeds. It is an undershrub perennial herb, that can grow to over 6 feet. The plant blooms in warm months. It grows on roadside banks, at elevations of 2800 to 5000 feet above sea level. The plant prefers moderate moisture, as well as sandy and well-drained soil and full sun. The flowers are small, with white hoods and about 1 cm across. The follicle is a pale green, and in shape an inflated spheroid. It is covered with rough hairs. It reaches three inches in diameter. The leaves are light green, linear to lanceolate and 3 to 4 inches long, 1.2 cm broad. The brown seeds have silky tufts. Showy Medinilla or Showy Asian Grapes 野牡丹藤 (Medinilla Speciosa) at MARDI Agrotechnology Park in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands. It is a species of flowering plant in the Melastomataceae family, native to the Philippines, Malaysia & Indonesia. This plant is also commonly known as the Philippine orchid. It is an epiphyte, they grow on other trees but does not withdraw its food from the host like parasites. Various species & hybrids in this family are well known & popular with plant collectors. The plant grows up to 3 meter tall with opposite, firm, leathery leaves, grow up to 30 cm long ovate shape with a short point. The flowers grow in panicles up to 50 cm long, with ovid pink bracts. The individual flowers are up to 25 mm & are pink, red or violet. The fruits are violet, fleshy berries, about 1 cm wide. Showy Medinilla does not tolerate temperatures below 15°C. It requires high humidity levels & bright sunlight with shade at the hottest time of the day. In the tropics, it is grown as a perennial. It is also a common house plant in cooler climates. King Boudewijn of Belgium was a big devotee of Medinilla. He grew them in the royal conservatories & they were depicted on the bank note of 10,000 Belgian francs. Mistakenly recorded as Medinilla Magnifica previously. M. Magnifica has a floral cape at the end of the fluorescent, M. Speciosa does not have it. The dramatic & very large pendent hanging blossoms have individual flowers in a bold curved shaped. This is enhanced by their being a rich saturated yellow, with maroon to brownish red outer tip coloring. The vine blooms from spring to autumn. It is cultivated as a popular ornamental plant in tropical & sub-tropical gardens, conservatories & greenhouses. Tree Privet is an evergreen tree growing to 10 m tall & broad. The leaves are opposite, glossy dark green, 6-17 cm long & 3-8 cm broad. The flowers are similar to other privets, white or near white, borne in panicles & unpleasantly pungent. The seeds are known as nu zhen zi 女桢子 (female chastity seed/berry) in traditional Chinese medicine & are believed to nourish liver & kidney yin & jing in the treatment of tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo (dizziness), premature graying of the hair, & soreness/weakness of the lower back & knees. Broom Forkmoss 曲尾藓 (Dicranum Scoparium) in Mossy Forest of Gunung Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. It is a species of dicranid moss, native to North America, also found in Europe, Asia, Australia & New Zealand. It usually forms tufts or mats on soil in dry to moist forested areas. Like many types of moss, Broom moss grows in clumps & sometimes with many other mosses. It can be distinguished by its leaves, which strongly curve to one side. Broom Forkmoss has root structure which help with water absorption & anchor the plant to the ground. They are usually robust & coarse, forming shiny tufts with woolly stems 2-8 cm high. The leaf midrib extends to the tip & usually has 4 ridges along its back. The leaves are 3.5-8 mm long, lance-shaped with a long, slender point, and strongly toothed along the upper third. Most leaves will be folded & curved to one side, but may be wavy. Capsules are 2.3-5 mm long, urn-shaped & curved. The capsules are held on mostly-erect stalks 18-35 mm long. Girgensohn's Bogmoss or Common Green Peat Moss 泥炭蘚 (Sphagnum Girgensohnii) in Mossy Forest of Gunung Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. Sphagnum is a genus of about 380 known species of mosses. Commonly called as peat moss. This species is easily found in Holarctic & Indo-Malesian. Both living & dead plants can hold 16 to 26 times as much water as their dry weight. It slowly spread into drier conditions as they grow, forming larger mires, both raised bogs & blanket bogs. They do not decay easily due to the phenolic compounds embedded in the cell walls. In addition, their bogs develop anaerobic soil conditions, which produces slower decay action. Sphagnum are known as habitat manipulator. They can influence the composition of habitats. Their ability to accumulate water provide habitat for a wide array of peatland plants, such as sedges, ericaceous shrubs, orchids & carnivorous plants. It can acidify its surroundings by taking up cations, like calcium & magnesium, releasing hydrogen ions. Under the right conditions, peat can accumulate to a depth of many meters. Different species of Sphagnum have different tolerance limits for flooding & pH, so any one peatland may have a number of different Sphagnum species. Peat or peat mosses are decayed, dried sphagnum moss. They are used as a soil conditioner for increasing the soil's capacity to hold water & nutrients. Suitable to deal with very sandy soil, or plants that need increased or steady moisture content to flourish, such it is widely used for shipping seeds & live plants. Sphagnum moss has been used as wounds dressing since World War I. It is absorptive & extremely acidic, so it inhibits growth of bacteria & fungi. Male Fern 鳞毛蕨 (Dryopteris Filix-Mas) in Mossy Forest of Gunung Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. It is common fern of the temperate Northern Hemisphere, native to much of Europe, Asia & North America. It favours damp shaded areas in the understory of woodlands, but also shady places on hedge-banks, rocks & screes. It is much less abundant in North America than in Europe. The plant is sometimes referred to in ancient literature as worm fern. Its specific epithet filix-mas means "male fern" (filix "fern", mas "male"), as the plant was thought to be the male version of the common lady fern Athyrium filix-femina, being robust in appearance & vigorous in growth. The semi-evergreen leaves have an upright habit & reach a maximum length of 150 cm with a single crown on each rootstock. The bipinnate leaves consist of 20-35 pinnae on each side of the rachis. The leaves taper at both ends, with the basal pinnae about half the length of the middle pinnae. The pinules are rather blunt & equally lobed all around. The stalks are covered with orange-brown scales. On the abaxial surface of the mature blade 5 to 6 sori develop in two rows. Common Bracken or Eagle Fern 蕨类 (Pteridium Aquilinum) in Mossy Forest of Gunung Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. It is a species of fern found in temperate & subtropical regions in both hemispheres. The extreme lightness of its spores has led to its global distribution. Bracken is an adaptable plant ready to colonise disturbed areas. It can even be aggressive in countries where it is native, such as England, where it has invaded the North Yorkshire moors. Common bracken is a herbaceous perennial plant, deciduous in winter. The large, roughly triangular fronds are produced singly, arising upwards from an underground rhizome, growing up to 1m tall. The main stem is up to 1 cm diameter at the base. It dies back to ground level in autumn. Sporangia are formed in sori on the underside of the frond. Bracken is a widely eaten vegetable in Korea, Japan & parts of China. In Korea, bracken is often eaten as namul or gosari. It is also a classic ingredient of bibimbap. The plant contains the carcinogenic compound ptaquiloside. High stomach cancer rates are found in Japan & North Wales, where the young stems are used as a vegetable, but it is unknown whether bracken plays any part at all. Consumption of ptaquiloside-contaminated milk is thought to contribute to human gastric cancer in the Andean states of Venezuela. Lycopodium is a genus of clubmosses, better known as ground pines or creeping cedar, in the family Lycopodiaceae, a family of fern-allies. They are flowerless, vascular, terrestrial or epiphytic plants, with widely branched stems with small, simple, needle or scale like leaves that cover the stem & branches thickly. The leaves contain a single, unbranched vascular strand & are microphylls. The kidney-shaped or reniform spore-cases contain spores of one kind only & are borne on the upper surface of the leaf blade of specialized leaves arranged in a cone-like strobilus at the end of upright stems. Firmoss 马尾杉 (Huperzia) in Mossy Forest of Gunung Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. Huperzia is a genus of lycophyte plants, commonly known as the firmosses or fir clubmosses. It has undifferentiated sporangial leaves, but not in apical cones formation. The name firmoss is used for some of the north temperate species, due to their superficial resemblance to branches of fir or conifer. The plants generally have radial ranks linear to lanceolate evergreen leaves & forking vegetative stems. The spores are in kidney-shaped sporangia grown individually on the stem at the bases of the leaves. Firmosses grow in clusters. The roots are produced in the tips of the shoots, growing downward in cortex to emerge at soil level. It is an evergreen dwarf, ground cover plant. It is widely distributed from Pacific Ocean, southern Chile & western Argentina north to Guatemala, Hawaii, New Zealand, eastern Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines & Taiwan. The leaves are single opposite, broadly ovate & leathery shine. It is only 0.3-0.5 cm diameter. The flowers are green, not obvious, it relies heavily on insects for pollination. The fruit is bright orange about 1cm in diameter like a pearl. The plant at higher altitude has much smaller fruit & are bright red colored. It's also known as Coral Moss. It likes the cold temperature of 10 to 16°C, therefore it is only found at high altitudes in the tropical regions. It will hibernate when it is lower than 5°C. This plant is native to Indomalaya, Japan & Australia. It grows wild on a wide range of soils, from sea-level up to an altitude of 3000 meters. It can grow to a height of 3 meters. The plant is branched & has reddish stems covered with bristly scales & minute hairs. Its leaves have three distinct main veins running from base to apex. Its flowers are borne on short terminal cymes 2 to 8 cm across. Its fruit is a berry, which when ripe breaks irregularly to expose its soft, dark blue pulp & orange seeds. Stink Beans or better known as Petai (Parkia Speciosa) 臭豆 in it's natural habitat at Ulu Jempol. The plant bears long, flat edible beans with bright green soft seeds. The seeds size & shape of plump almonds that have a rather peculiar smell, characterised by some as being similar to natural gas. Petai trees are native to South East Asian countries. It can grow to 30 m height. Bearing flowers in a light bulb-shaped mass at the end of long stalks, the flowers secrete a nectar that attracts bats & other pollinators. The fruits emerge as long, twisted, translucent pods in a cluster of seven or eight pods. The tall white trunk tree from afar is Honey Bee Tree 樹王木 (Koompassia Excelsa). Peninsula Malaysia, it is known as Tualang, Sarawakian call them Tapang, in Sabah it is called Mangaris, Kalimantan is Bangris. It is an emergent tropical rainforest tree. It is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines & Thailand. It is one of the tallest tropical tree species measured as high as 88 m or 289 ft! They grow in lowland rainforests where they tower over the canopy. Like most tall rainforest trees they have huge buttress roots to support their weight. The majority of the nutrients in rainforest soil are near the surface, making large spreading roots more effective than deep ones. They grow branches above the canopy around 30 m (100 ft) & have slippery trunks which protect them from sun bears, making them attractive to giant honey bees (Apis Dorsata) 大蜜蜂 which hang their huge combs from the branches. The bees also protect the trees from loggers, as the value of the honey is higher than that of the timber. There is a long history in Borneo of the honey combs being collected by native climbers using bamboo ladders built into the trunk with smoke as protection. This is recorded in the book of 'Poems & Chants of Sarawak Dayaks', which expands on the cultural significance of this tree which links the earth to the sky. It is native taboo to log Tapang trees in parts of Sarawak. Confederate Rose (Hibiscus Mutabilis) 木芙蓉 at Penang Hill. Native to China, Confederate Rose isn't rose, but a species of hibiscus. It tends to be shrubby or treelike, though it behaves more like a perennial further north. This is a plant noted for its showy flowers. Flowers can be double or single & are 10 to 15 cm. It can reach heights of 4.5 m with a woody trunk. A much bushier plant will be 1.8 m high & typical provides more flower. They have a very fast growth rate. Lempoyang or Bitter Ginger (Zingiber Zerumbet) 红球姜 at Penang Hill. This is a plant species in the ginger family with leafy stems growing to about 1.2 m tall. It originates from Asia, but can be found in many tropical countries. It is a perennial plant. It goes dormant above ground as the leafy stems shrivel & die away from autumn until spring, leaving the pale brown stems (rhizomes) at ground level. In the spring, the plant springs up anew. The blade-shaped leaves can grow up to 20 cm long on thin & upright stem. The conical or club-shaped flower heads burst forth on separate shorter stalks. These appear in the summer, after the leafy stems have grown for a while. The flower heads are initially green & are 3 to 10 cm long with overlapping scales, enclosing small yellowish-white flowers poke out few at a time. As the flower heads mature, they gradually fill with aromatic, slimy liquid & turn to brighter red color. The flower stalks usually remain hidden beneath the leaf stalks.
