With a fossil record of about 400 million years, club mosses are some of Ireland’s most ancient plants! Our uplands are home to several species of club mosses. Here are three: 📸1-2 is Stags Horn Club Moss, which spreads into stems that look like bifurcating reindeer antlers! 📸 3 is the more common Fir club moss (the stems look a bit like miniature green cones of conifer tree). 📸4-5 is Alpine club moss, which sadly is becoming rarer in Ireland due to climate change as its range is pushed to higher ground due to warming temperatures. Fir crying out loud No moths! Not one iota as I stared into the second moth trap. I had guessed it would be scant as the nights lately were cold and clear; and a little breeze had picked up today. However I decided to make the most of the location and “mooch”. I love that empty head space when you just see things and let everything else drop away but the moment you are caught up in. Skylarks, pipits and cuckoo fill the sound scape. An odd sound of a bleating sheep, motorbike going up the road or a distant ting of a post knocker driving a fence stake into the ground invade the sound mix now and again. Then it appeared from the ground this charming little plant. A fir clubmoss. One of four I was to discover this day. It shows that there is always something new to discover if you only keep looking at the world around you. One for the Elan Valley scarce plants report. It’s not recorded much in the catchment with only 4 other sites spanning back an age so I was pleased to get my eye in. I found one last year on our neighbours farm so delighted to find it here. I am still to discover a stags horn club moss and I will be made up if I find one of those. Fir clubmoss is a primitive plant found in moorlands and mountains. The stems of this tufted, upright “fern” not moss look like tiny conifers. I found these ones on rocky outcrops just meters from the house! Isn’t life funny. Bluebells are out here now and fencing is well underway. В народній медицині траву плауна використовували як проносний, абортивний засіб, при шкірних захворюваннях та від глистів. BEWARE: this herb is poisonous! and has many side effects. It is collected in August-September after the spore period. In official medicine it is used to treat a person from chronic alcoholism. When decoction of clubmoss is drank in turns with alcohol you can obtain vomiting reflex to alcohol. But it should be under strict observation of a doctor. Externally various skin deseases are cured with the help of this herb, e.g. psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis. In folk medicine it is used to kill worms, as purgative and emetic. More moorland treasures 🌱🌸🍄 First up are beautiful sundews. These are great! No really, these are Great Sundews. A dazzling combination of hot pink and acid green that really pop against the black peaty soil of the moorland. Their beauty belies a rather grisly character as these plants are carnivorous, trapping and digesting insects in their sticky leaves. They're not the only carnivorous plants to be found in this habitat, Butterwort was easy to spot with their starry rosettes of lime green leaves in which they trap their prey (👉📸); their pretty purple flowers held aloft on long, curving stems. Another plant to catch my eye was the golden spires of Fir Clubmoss looking resplendent in the sunshine (👉📸) and the first orchids I've seen in flower this year, I think this is Heath Spotted-orchid. And last but not least a perfect little orange fungi, possibly a Heath Waxcap? Niissä on terhakkuutta kuin pystykorvissa ja slaavilaisen metsän salaperäisyyttä. Kukonjalkamökin narskeen voi melkein kuulla. Tietenkään ketunliekoa ei voi tuoda sisään, joten liekonaisen on oltava ovela. Huperzioiden suvulla on myös trooppisia jäseniä, kuten tämä hyllyllä kökkivä Huperzia spec. Borneo. Tilasin sen kesällä ja oletin, että se näivettyy saman tien: löytämäni hoito-ohjeet antoivat ymmärtää, että se pärjää puutarhakasvina Singaporessa, mutta Suomesta ei ollut paljon puhetta. Kesän sanikkainen vietti parvekkeen hämärässä sopessa, nyt olen nostanut sen valon alle. These three could be members of the Cortinarius family, but who knows. I love to forage for mushrooms and then paint them! But I never have the patience to sit down and really look up what kind of shroom they are. Pretty near is good enough for me (and I don't eat them) 🙂 They were growing at the same spot in the mossy environment I visited a couple of days ago. I am far more interested in capturing their colours and personalities! And these three had me dig out some colours I normally not use. From the right hand side of the paper; 1 - Olive Green and Light Red. Yes - green out of a tube 😱 2 - Perylene Maroon and Brown Madder. Ok, I use P. Maroon a lot, but not for red colours... And Brown Madder is not anything I use daily... 3 - Again P. Maroon, and Sepia! I think I have to see this painting as a sketch, for future paintings. What an amazing day botanizing with @brandoncorder ! The highlight of the day was finding Huperzia selago, the fir clubmoss. Not only is this a Lycopodiaceae species I had never seen but it is a new Wisconsin county record! We found it in central Jackson County, over 100 miles away from the nearest previously recorded occurrence! Fir clubmoss is very uncommon in WI and is considered a Wisconsin Special Concern species. I have included maps (with a red dot denoting Jackson County) from the WI DNR with current county occurrences and a map from the Wisconsin State Herbarium with previous collections. Last is a map from the BoNAP website showing fir club moss’s distribution in the US. You can see from the last map just how far of a range extension our find is for the overall distribution of the species. I often spot this species when I hike on the Italian Alps, where it is pretty common (although no less fascinating). Like all of Lycopodiaceae, H. selago is a non-flowering plant and do not produce seeds; instead it produces spores inside special structures called sporangia. Wroniec widlasty (Huperzia selago) - w przeciwieństwie do dwóch poprzednich gatunków ma pędy wzniesione, tworzące niewielkie, ale gęste kępy dochodzące do 25 cm. Liście sztywne, zaostrzone, równowąskie i wyraźnie odstające. Od innych widłaków można go łatwo odróżnić po zarodniach - rozmieszczone są w pachwinach zwykłych liści asymilacyjnych w środkowej części pędu, a nie - jak to zwykle bywa - na liściach zarodnionośnych w szczytowej części. Wroniec widlasty rośnie w wilgotnych i zacienionych lasach, także między skałami. Częściej można go spotkać w wyższych partiach gór. Grateful for this beautiful place and all the beings in it. I’ve really been enjoying getting into the forest daily if not twice ~ the dogs are much better in the house if we’ve been on some good jaunts! First pic is of a Devils Club stalk with waterfall icicles, then this incredible Spruce tree that grows on the rocks facing the ocean and is buffeted by strong winds, foot traffic and sun exposure, I love its strength and dignity and form. Also been liking the Birch Conks, I have been drinking decoctions fairly regularly and have noticed better dream recall, coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. Firmoss 马尾杉 (Huperzia) in Mossy Forest of Gunung Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. Huperzia is a genus of lycophyte plants, commonly known as the firmosses or fir clubmosses. It has undifferentiated sporangial leaves, but not in apical cones formation. The name firmoss is used for some of the north temperate species, due to their superficial resemblance to branches of fir or conifer. The plants generally have radial ranks linear to lanceolate evergreen leaves & forking vegetative stems. The spores are in kidney-shaped sporangia grown individually on the stem at the bases of the leaves. Firmosses grow in clusters. The roots are produced in the tips of the shoots, growing downward in cortex to emerge at soil level.
