What a lovely wallpaper this pattern turned out to be! When I create patterns, I often am not sure what they are going to end up on, and I'm still having a hard time visualizing this as I am creating the pattern. Gaining that skill is a work in progress. I'm still learning a lot about designing. I'm finding that this print looks best printed at a larger scale. The linework is so fine that at a small scale, it just doesn't show up on fabric as I hoped it would. But printed on paper, it looks great. From the beginning, I've seen this - of all places - on a tissue box! Ha! I haven't started researching companies I would like to pitch my art to quite yet. I'm still building my portfolio and getting my work out into the world, as well as seeing what comes out of me. I never really know what the art is going to look like until it's out. That just seem to be how I create a lot of the time. I don't have much of a vision. I just sit down and let whatever comes, come out. Sometimes it's terrible and sometimes I love it! When I asked for feedback on this collection, this pattern "meander" was often the favorite pattern in the bunch. I think it has a good mix of movement and organic lines. I love the little bird feet! It's interesting how this first collection took me over a year to make, as I was learning everything about pattern creation, Adobe Illustrator, and how to start a business. There were *so* many things to learn. And there still are. But I feel less overwhelmed now than I did a year ago. I feel more confident in myself as a business owner, a designer, and I'm 100% positive this is what I want to be doing as a career. I’ve been working on a few new collections and some new illustrations in the background over here. Soon I will be sharing the second colorway of the “A love letter to My Back Yard” collection that will be available on Spoonflower early next week, as well as the Textured Earthbrush mini collection from the Spoonflower challenge, followed by a full collection to go with the Birds and Blooms pattern I posted a couple weeks ago. Creating is starting to come a lot easier for me than it had in the past. I hadn’t intentionally done this, but I have developed a regular, now daily, art practice. And I’m finally starting to find my groove with creating- just for the sake of getting what is in my head down somewhere as well as creating with a collection and theme in mind. This deer track pattern went through a few iterations as a geometric print before I settled on this arrangement. One of the things I love about surface design and pattern work is the interplay between motifs and the creativity associated with that process. I can have several ideas of patterns in my head before I start a collection, but I never know how it’s going to turn out. I find it so interesting and inspiring that the collection reveals itself to me as it is created. Often creating one pattern leads to inspiration for the next one and so on. It’s all part of the process, and I love it! Something I haven't shared yet is that I eat a gluten and dairy-free diet due to gluten and casein sensitivity. One of the things I miss SO much is good bread. I LOVE french baguettes so much, and this past summer in San Jose, CA, we found an amazing gluten free lunch place that made sandwiches on gluten free baguettes. Oh my gosh I was in heaven. I think we ate there about four times in as many days. Every time I picked up Josh from the airport or dropped him off, we ordered lunch from there! Over the winter, I bought a gluten-free bread cook book with the full intention of baking Gluten-free bread. Have I done it yet? No. I still have time before we leave at the end of May, right?
