Weeks ago after returning from Austin I snapped this picture, feeling grateful to live in a beautiful neighborhood. Now I’m grateful I have the privilege of staying in bed and recuperating, my short walks involving making tea and sipping water. . We are so much stronger and more fragile than we realize. Nowhere is this more evident for me than a head cold. . I’m weighed down by illness and fatigue and struck by how hard it is for any of us to rest in a culture of constant noise and busyness. Thanks to another round illnesses being passed around I’ve been recovering in bed. I don’t usually let myself rest in bed during the day (read: it’s been over a year since I did). Today marks a whole 2 years since we got engaged... for the first time 💍 I (Meg) arranged for a guided tour around Venice with a wonderful lady who was in on my secret the whole time. We stopped off at the most amazing chocolatier shop for treats before heading to learn some of the history of Venice and ended at a beautiful secret garden full of gorgeous flowers and a view of the ocean. With a secret cue from me, our guide asked if she could take a photo of us in the gardens and I all but collapsed onto one knee to ask Kayleigh to marry me 💕 I have 0 memory of what I said, all I remeber was telling Kayleigh to breathe as she was shaking so much, only for her to point out that it was in fact me who was practically vibrating 😂 Obviously she said YES, thank god and she had to drop to the floor to hug me as I seriously could not stand up. To celebrate we took a Sandolo ride around Venice with the only female Sandolo rower in Venice before stopping for tea and a glass of champange to finish. Despite the fact I have practically no memory of the day due to being so anxious, its still one of my favourite days ever 🤍

People will ask me who my first love is, and it isn’t Mark, the writer I met through a friend in my twenties, though our love was a brief and devastating affair. It was my father, and his mercurial moods, charming behavior, love bombing, and intermittent disappearance set me up to pursue lifeless loveless relationships with men who only reinforced painful narratives I believed. . As @taylorswift sings, his “love” felt like ruins, a remembrance of the sweetness we once shared when I was little and he was more present and available. He never forgave me for him choosing to raise me as a single parent, and while this isn’t a polite thing to say about him, it is true. . And so the healing I’ve experienced is swirled into this poem I’ve got up on my blog and in my newsletter for those of you who are subscribed. Thank you for the sacred act of reading and bearing witness. Do we ever get over our first loves? The work for me is to remember and savor the moments of sweetness while also remembering the terrible because both are true. We cannot have one without the other. . It’s officially Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage month! Time to celebrate all AA and NHPI contributions to the US in various areas such as medicine, literature and art, sports and recreation, government and politics, and activism and law. Also, a time for those of us who come from Asian or Pacific Islander descent to reflect on our own identities and how our heritage has shaped us into our own sense of self. My name is McKenna and I am a proud queer transracial adoptee. It’s taken me 29 years to comfortably say that phrase. To those of you who don’t know, I was adopted at three months, from Seoul, South Korea to an amazing family in the US. Everyone’s bouts and struggles with identity are all different and unique in their own ways, and mine’s been a continual journey of self-acceptance. I used to try and hide or avoid talking about things that made me ‘different’ from others. I hated having dark hair when everyone around me had light hair – so I dyed it. I hated being adopted, so I didn’t talk about it. I think that’s in part why coming out as queer also scared me too, one more thing that made me ‘different’. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to accept my differences, through not without hard days. I’ve become proud of a heritage that stems from a country thousands of miles away and have slowly become more comfortable in an identity that once felt like a stranger sitting across a table from me that I looked at as someone I aspired to be. But the Asian American/Pacific Islander community is resilient and beautiful, and I love that there are so many amazing people represented through it. And I am so proud to be a part of it. To those who struggle with their own identities; racial, queer, adoptee status, etc, I’m right there with you. What an exhilarating weekend in Austin! I walked for hours yesterday at Zilker Park in cloudy afternoon light, watching people kayak with loud music playing as they paddled down the Colorado River and young men jumping off the narrow walking bridge near Barton Springs Pool. . I stopped for awhile at the tiny bridge and laid my arms on the metal, warming up myself like a lizard. I looked out the opposite way towards downtown, absorbing some of boys’ joy as they jumped behind me. It was against the rules according to the nearest sign and their act of defiance nourished me in ways I’m still processing. . Choosing joy in a world that wants us to conform to the status quo is one of the most subversive practices we can engage in. What a beautiful spring we are having! Here are some of the flowers we’ve planted in our garden. I’m especially excited to rave about the flowers because tomorrow marks fifteen years of my father being gone, and how peaceful I feel. It’s amazing how much grief I’ve processed and while I’m sure there’s more, I’ll be fortunate enough to attend @tripwithellen’s somatic grief group tomorrow to explore what might arise. I can’t wait, and find the liminal space of spring to be the right time to keep letting go of what needs to be released in terms of my father. It’s definitely been painful (isn’t growth always painful?) but it’s also been exhilarating because I’m more myself now ever have been. More liberated, genuine, whole. Ongoing criticism and disapproval ruin a child’s nervous system and all I’m saying is that this picture is proof that I and so many others will not go down, even in spite of meanness, impatience, and dismissiveness coming our way. . I struggle with feelings of shame and have had the misfortune of having some of my worst fears realized. It’s been happening a lot for the past year, and it’s because of the awakening. It isn’t neat and tidy, which makes people uncomfortable. . I don’t know what it’s like to be someone else and so my default response is to be kind and caring. Not everyone has the same praxis. . I’m noticing how difficult it is to stay in mainstream Christianity. I’m so tired of getting judged, evaluated, and hurt by people who are supposed to be kind, loving, and uplifting. Sorta like Jesus would be. . But I’ll keep doing my art and dancing daily. I’ll keep loving who I’m called to love, and giving MYSELF the approval others withhold because of their own pain. . Sometimes I wish we could all learn how to be tender with ourselves so it could spread outward into a world filled with so much hardness, judgment, and fear. I wish for listening circles, trainings on sitting with our feelings, and needs meditations. We really do need this to survive as a species. . I had a strange dream this morning, seeing a seemingly endless closet cleaner than it has been in previous ones. I don’t know if this happens to others but I have episodic dreams, returning to places and images I’ve visited before, and in this one I understand why: . 👉🏼👉🏼 I’m letting go of relationships with no longer serve me, the old piles of trash bags and card boxes in the dreamscape gone. . What a fantastic Saturday! I joined in the celebration of @jess.Markland’s baby shower and painted with @malthewriter and @jennadewitt and other lovelies and ended the day with a visit to the jazz bar with my handsome partner! Happy Easter. Happy Trans Day of Visibility. These past few years have been hard as a queer and trans person of faith. Seemingly every week, a new bill is introduced somewhere in the country targeting trans people, particularly trans kids. These bills are introduced and supported overwhelmingly by Christians. In theory, these are people who worship the same God I do- but the Jesus I know is unrecognizable in the hate they spew against the Least of These. To my fellow trans people and especially to my fellow trans Christians: I see you and I love you exactly as you are. I’ve been seeing a pattern with clients and noticing it within myself as well—wanting the healing to have already happened yesterday and impatient for sustained change. . This is very human to want things to be different and better right now. Let’s validate our emotions and honor the intention for mental wellness and resiliency. . Healing isn’t exactly easy. We swim upstream as we choose to heal from past trauma, grief, overwhelm, or burnout. Why? Because it takes wise effort and time to change embedded patterns and our culture, communities, and families don’t always approve of or support our efforts to change. . But healing is worth it. Breaking old patterns and forming positive habits and becoming openhearted is worth it over the slow and dull death of inauthenticity and stuckness. .
