Twelve months later, in May 1999, Britney and Max reunited and flew to N.Y.C. to re-record the vocal tracks of the song at Battery Studios. After attaining huge success with her debut album ...Baby One More Time (1999) and its singles "...Baby One More Time", "Sometimes", "(You Drive Me) Crazy", "Born to Make You Happy", and "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart", Spears recorded much of her follow-up record Oops!... I Did It Again (2000) in November 1999 at the Cheiron Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. Its title track was written and produced by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, while background vocals were provided by Martin and Nana Hedin. An accompanying music video for "Oops!... Happy 22nd anniversary to 'Lucky' by @britneyspears ! 🌠📸💧💖🎬🪞🌆💐 In what might turn out to be the most ominous tale of foreboding in modern pop music, the American singer released 'Lucky' as the second single from her sophomore album 'Oops!... I Did It Again' back in the summer of 2000. This sweet bubblegum dance-pop midtempo that packs a raft of elating melodies and bang-in-your-brain hooks was written and produced by Max Martin and @theramiyacoub, with additional co-writing by @alexanderkronlund. As the intro heralds, "this is a story about a girl named 'Lucky'". This glorious early 2000s bop that tells the tale of a famous actress makes us explore the darkest sides of fame. At that early stage in her career, there were obviously going to be faint parallels drawn through to Britney Spears herself, but such conclusions were still somewhat premature. However, a few years later, 'Lucky' sadly did turn out to be a prophetic track foreshadowing the pop star's mishaps... Here is my attempt at selecting just five reasons why I consider 'Lucky' a true pop masterpiece - and why this is actually the first song that has turned me into a Max Martin and Cheiron-aholic : ¤ The ambiguous contrast between mournful lyrics, melancholic melodies that constantly bounce back and forth between major and minor chords, and a joyous production with playful chimes and enthusiastic synth stabs. All these elements cleverly assembled together to form a 3'23 slice of brilliance creates that so peculiar pop pinnacle feeling of "dancing with tears in your eyes". The song's enchanting music video, directed by Dave Meyers, mingles dripping mascara on lonely nights with glitters and gorgeous smiles in front of cameras, and it could not illustrate better the ambivalent atmosphere reigning in 'Lucky'. Just in the same way, the bubblegum pop gloss brought by the shimmering production disguises even its most devastating lyrics. He said, “While the guys were producing that song, they suggested that Justin say it that way. It just sounded better. They liked that kind of register, but at the time no one really thought anything of it—especially, nothing to do with April 30!”.
