The first time I recall hearing Pink Floyd's "Money" was on Tucson's KTKT-AM Radio in 1973 when I was 11 years old. There was a certain word in the lyrics that was bleeped out, replaced with the sound of a backwards cash register or, in some cases, simply a backwards "naughty" word, depending on which promo copy the radio station was airing. When I finally heard the album that "Money" came from, man, talk about life altering music, I bull-bleep you not. On 2012 April 27, Bob Dylan received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor awarded to a US civilian citizen, from US President Barack Obama. The Medal recognizes individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Among the twelve other recipients that day was astronaut John Glenn. Dylan was only the 29th musician to ever receive the award, whose previous recipients include Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and Irving Berlin. Dylan’s 5-LP, 53-track box set compilation titled “Biograph” was released in November 1985. Spanning his career to the date of release, the recordings on “Biograph” are a mix of rarities, hit singles, and album tracks. They are not presented in chronological order; 18 of its 53 tracks had not been previously issued, and three more had only been previously available on singles. April 27, 1974 - “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” by Jim Croce peaked at No.9 on the Hot 100 becoming his fifth and final top 10 hit. The song went to No.1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and reached No.68 on the Billboard Country chart, Croce’s only song to chart there. The song was a posthumously released single. Croce was killed in a small-plane crash in September 1973, the same week that a 45RPM single, the title cut from his studio album I Got a Name was released. After the delayed release of a song from his previous album (“Time in a Bottle”) in late 1973, “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” was chosen as the second single released from his final studio album. Ingrid Croce wrote an autobiographical cookbook, Thyme in a Bottle, in which she includes interesting anecdotes about Jim. She wrote the following about “I’ll Have To Say ‘I Love You’ in a Song”: - One weekend, after being on the road for many months, Jim got a chance to come home to relax with his family. We settled in to enjoy our time alone together. Though Jim was expecting company the next day, avoiding confrontation he never told me that we were to be joined by an entire film crew! The next morning, 15 people from Acorn Productions descended upon our house to record a promotional film of Jim Croce at Home on the Farm. I prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner for the whole film crew and after the group left, I questioned Jim about our finances. After a year and a half of his working so very hard on the road, we were barely making ends meet, but Jim wouldn’t talk about it. He hated questions as much as he hated confrontation, especially about money. He stormed out of our bedroom and went down to the kitchen table to brood. The next morning he woke me gently by singing his new song. “Every time I tried to tell you the words just came out wrong. OTD in 1994, Live release their hit album “Throwing Copper”, it eventually went on to become one of the best selling albums of the 90s and a personal favorite of many. After reviewing this album and another in depth listen of it, the quality of music on this album is tremendous. The guitars are jangly but also have that grit to them at certain points. The dynamics of the drums are always spot on with the energy of the song, and Ed’s voice and songwriting ability floored me a few times through our review.
