Today is Tuesday, not Monday, but we are coming off a three-day holiday weekend, and today had a bit of a Monday vibe. Let's get motivational. • I am an active member in a Facebook group dedicated to brain injury and stroke awareness, and this morning I woke up to a post from a member which simply read: "Do you think we can ever heal? -someone almost 3 years out." • That hit me square in the chest. • As a speech-language pathologist, I get asked this question from almost every new client, especially if it has been a year or two after their injury. • If I listen closely enough I can hear the real question which is buried underneath: Should I keep trying or just surrender to my injury and give up? • My answer is usually: a little bit of both. • I often encounter individuals recovering from brain injury or stroke with the mindset that acceptance is complacency. Many clients I work with in speech therapy admit that they do not wish to accept the realities of their injury because doing so would be weak, or would indicate that they were giving up on their goals. These are the people who end up spinning their wheels and find themselves burnt out and in a stuck place of fear and stagnancy. • We are powerless when we are in resistance to change. I'll say it again for those of you who really need to hear this today (myself included): We are powerless when we are in resistance to change. • The truth is: Acceptance is not giving up. It is the act of taking your personal power back. From a place of acceptance, we can have the energy to make progress toward our goals, improve our lives, and heal. • Read more about how to practice radical acceptance in my latest blog post! In light of the Coronavirus, Rehab Rising is offering teletherapy at a “pay what you can” rate for residents of Arizona and North Carolina who need speech therapy but are unable to leave their homes. This reduced private pay rate will last through June 1, although it may be extended longer as if there is still a national emergency in effect. • Please contact us at [email protected] or inquire through our website (link in bio) for a free phone consultation. • **Please note that not everyone is a good fit for online speech therapy. Please inquire through our website to set up a free phone consultation to find out if teletherapy is right for you. Also note there is limited space available.** • • • • • #ownyourrecovery #rehabrising #speechtherapy #speechpathology #stroke #TBI #braininjurysurvivor #strokesurvivor #strokeawareness #braininjuryawareness #strokerecovery #braininjuryrecovery #recovery #therapy #speech #SLP #strokerehab #privatepractice #homehealth #teletherapy #vocrehab #vocationalrehab #smallbusiness #recovery #thinkpositive #ASHA #TBIrecovery #health #healing #strokerehabilitation #Coronavirus #teletherapy

In the face of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the CDC issued guidelines calling for “social distancing”, a conscious effort to reduce close contact between individuals to limit spread of disease. • Social distancing is crucial to limiting the spread of the virus, but do you know what else is crucial? Your recovery. • Although the rest of the world is seemingly grinding to a halt, if you are recovering from stroke or brain injury, your brain does not stop recovering. It needs to continue to receive important therapy services in order to continue its healing process. However, if you feel like every time you go to your therapist’s office you are immediately transported to the set of a zombie apocalypse movie, please know that there is an alternative solution: teletherapy! • With teletherapy, you don’t have to choose between staying safe and pursuing your recovery goals. Check out the blog to find out more about teletherapy and how it can help you and your family in the face of Coronavirus. Brain injury and stroke recovery may be a LIFE-LONG process but that means you can unlock a LIFETIME of progress. How’s that for a mindset goal? 💪🏽 • In honor of MLK Jr Day on Monday I wanted to highlight this quote, for anyone struggling with stroke or brain injury recovery (or any big life challenge, really) that needs to hear it. • I have had many clients come to me wanting to throw in the towel, feeling so overwhelmed by the journey ahead of them that they felt it wasn’t even worth it to try. • Sometimes it is best to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Don’t look at the miles left you have to walk; just focus on taking that next step. • Remember, no matter what anyone says to you, if you put in the work there is ALWAYS progress to be made. Your brain is always learning, never stagnant. That means there is hope. • Keep fighting, friends. 💚 #ownyourrecovery • • • • • #ownyourrecovery #itstimetothrive #rehabrising #speechtherapy #speechpathology #stroke #TBI #braininjurysurvivor #strokesurvivor #strokeawareness #braininjuryawareness #strokerecovery #braininjuryrecovery #recovery #therapy #speech #SLP #privatepractice #teletherapy #vocrehab #vocationalrehab #smallbusiness #recovery #thinkpositive #ASHA #TBIrecovery #aphasia #aphasiaawareness

Aphasia affects language, not intelligence. • This is the first phrase I write when I create an advocacy card for each of my clients diagnosed with aphasia, along with a list of strategies others can use when speaking to them. An aphasia advocacy card is a little wallet-sized card that individuals with aphasia can hand to a stranger- perhaps a bank teller, a cashier, or a receptionist at the doctor's office- to educate them about what aphasia is, and how best to communicate with them. • So, you might be thinking- what is aphasia? And how can I best communicate with a person who has aphasia? • Check out the newest blog post to find out! I get this question a lot when talking about my work. Or my favorite follow-up question: "So your job is to teach kids to pronounce words?" When I explain that, no, I work primarily with adults, the question that follows is: "Why would an adult need speech therapy?" • My answer: "How much time do you have?" *cue snarky smile* • Go find out more about how speech language pathologists can help you on our blog!
