Storytime... 🤓 I'll be training LETRS Unit 3 this week and I'm so excited to share these decodable books from @phonicbooks with the teachers at the training! In LETRS Unit 3, we do a model phonics lesson about -tch where I'm the teacher and the participants get to experience an entire phonics lesson as a student. I'm excited to use this Ready Reader Decodable with my intervention group next week. We've been working hard on s-blends & l-blends and this book will give us some authentic practice and let us touch on some other skills. 🤩 Here's my planning thought process... 💚While previewing the text, I noticed a lot of past tense verbs, which will be a great review for my third graders! We can talk about how to tackle decoding past tense verbs with -ed and look at some irregular past tense verbs that are very decodable! I’ll put then on index cards and we’ll practice reading them ahead of time and we’llsort them (-ed or irregular) as we discuss. 💚This text also has a very clear problem and solution, so we'll be able to write sentences about the problem in the story and how the characters solve it. We'll do this after reading the text 2-3 times. 💚I also made a list of the words in the text that have blends at the beginning and end so we can use them for our warm up. This assessment gives me a snapshot of student need, from decoding to fluency to comprehension. Keep the end goal in mind. All of the pieces of reading instruction are important but they are leading us to a specific outcome: we want fluent readers who can comprehend text. 🤓 BUT… the route we take to get there does matter. There are right ways and there are wrong ways to teach word recognition skills. We want methods that explicitly & systematically teach speech sounds and phonics patterns. And how those phonics patterns map onto our speech (Hello, orthographic mapping!). We want all words to become sight words for our students – words they recognize instantly because they’ve been mapped in their brains. 🧠 I’m loving my reread of LETRS Volume 1 and all the fantastic reminders about teaching reading! It’s also reminding me how daunting it can be to dive into the science of reading! I’m always here to answer your questions without judgement!
