Located in the Russell Road Cemetery in Port Elizabeth is a striking white grave. It belongs to James Langley Dalton. Dalton was a survivor of the Battle of Rorkes Drift and the recipient of a Victoria Cross. The battle at Rorkeโs Drift took place from 22 to 23 January 1879. 139 British soldiers defended a supply station against about 4 500 Zulu warriors with about 500 Zulus dying in the battle and only 17 of the defenders being killed. Not every day you get the opportunity to shoot with vintage and replica black powder weapons. On our recent outing to the Anglo Boer War Museum at Mount Ingwe in the Elandsrivier Valley with the Eastern Cape Branch of the South African Military History Society we were in for a treat. And I don't mean koeksisters and root beer. Some of the members of the Falcon Rock Black Powder Club came to demonstrate their black powder weapons. And not just demonstrate them. We also got to handle and shoot. I'm not going to bore you with all the info on how big the lead balls are and how much gunpowder gets put in. Mainly because I don't know. What I do know is that it's truly an experience and not quite what you expect. Yes, it's loud, but these weapons have very little recoil. Most of the guys were waiting to shoot the rifles so I grabbed the opportunity to handle the handgun. The Cape Recife lighthouse on the western tip of Algoa Bay was completed in 1851. The lighthouse warns passing ships coming into and out of Algoa Bay of the dangers of Thunderbolt Reef, which has claimed many ships. The reef is named after the HMS Thunderbolt, a British Royal Navy Sail and Paddle Frigate that was here on the 3rd February 1847.
