Why Cloud Mountain Coffee? We lived in Haiti for 10 years and this was the view out of our back door. 🤩 Haiti is filled of natural beauty, and DELICIOUS coffee. In fact, some of us weren’t coffee drinkers before trying some in Haiti. We started selling our dear friend’s Haitian sugar cane coffee (which didn’t always travel well) and now we’ve moved onto locally sourced beans from two amazing social enterprises giving Haitian farmers a livable wage for their product. Thanks to our local roasting friends, we also realized that this kind of coffee is delicious when roasted a little lighter so you can taste the nuttiness and fruit notes of the bean. 40 Years Ago, Haiti had Forests In the 1980’s, Haiti had 25% of its forests, allowing hillsides to withstand heavy rain. 1987’s category 3 Hurricane Emily passed without loss of life; forested mountains were the reason. In direct contrast, by 2004, less than 4% of Haiti’s forests remained. In that year, tropical storm Jeanne (note – it’s not even a hurricane) crossed the western Artibonite causing flooding which killed 1,870, injured 2,620, and displaced 300,000.
