So, if y’all remember a couple days ago, I showed you that I had re-planted some carrots from seeds that I had grown in an egg crate. Well, the three seeds that you see, growing here, are not those carrots. These are tomatoes that I am re-planting in the same thing that I put the carrots. The carrots seem to have died out. My only guess is that growing seeds in an egg crate, while it seems novel and cool, my guess is that the seeds when they start to grow don’t have enough room to establish a strong root system. So at this point, I don’t recommend growing seeds in an egg crate. I’ve wanted to grow my own asparagus for the longest time. As a vegetable I t’s absolutely delicious, not regularly available in the supermarket, it’s expensive when it is available and it’s a perennial crop… all the boxes ticked as far as my veg plot “prerequisite list” goes. I recently bought a few crowns of purple “Burgundine” to grow in containers. It only took a couple of weeks before the first tiny little spear appeared! Osternest gefunden! Eigentlich wollten die Kinder den Bau von dem Kaninchen, das seit ein paar Tagen in unserem Garten wohnt, suchen. Stattdessen haben sie in der Hecke ein Gelege mit 23 Eiern gefunden. Farblich kann man gut erkennen, dass alle Eier von demselben Huhn stammen müssen. Da unsere Mädels momentan sehr gut legen, ist es nicht mal aufgefallen, dass eine Dame zum Legen woanders hin geht. Die Kinder haben die Eier dann auch direkt getestet. Laut Wasser-Test sind tatsächlich alle Eier in Ordnung und noch frisch. Drei Eier sind heute im Abendessen gelandet - nachdem sie einzeln aufgeschlagen und für einwandfrei befunden wurden. Es gab Pide mit eigenem Spinat aus dem Gewächshaus. Taking advantage of a warmer (and dry!) afternoon I’ve started off my lettuces. This raised bed is home to the lettuces that I’m growing for seed for next year’s local seed bank. This is part of my role as one of the seed stewards for our local seed library. This variety is Marvel of Four Seasons and is a beautiful lettuce with reddish outer leaves and a lovely green heart. I want these to be hardy and cope with life in NE Scotland so I’ve put them straight in the ground as seeds. I have netted to protect them from birds as they grow, but I’ll keep the nets as long as possible because I’m growing for seed and I want to keep a bit of a barrier from my other lettuces to avoid cross pollination. When you discover a mulberry tree in your daughter’s backyard…that she didn’t even know she had….of course you make preserves. Yummmm!! I miss MY mulberry trees… the power company obliterated them last year while “cutting them back.” Then they paid us to cut them completely down, along with all of the elm trees that were problematic for the power company, because they kept growing so far into the power lines. Ugh. I always dread this day. It's exhausting. It's smelly. It's bloody. It's slimy....but... that's about 80-85lbs of food for our family right there (not including the heads and feet frozen and packaged separately for broth making purposes and the organs cooked up for the dogs). It's harvest time! Today's lunch was an omelett our duck eggs with brukale, pak choi, parsley, chives, ramson with a little sausage. For desser I boiled some rhubarb with some water, cardamom, cinnamon and sugar and served it with a little bit of cream. Just like my grandmother Thelma used to do ❤️ I've been working some more in the garden today since we've had our extra daughter here today as well as a friend to our oldest son so the kids have been busy playing 😁 So the plastic is removed and now I'm trying to cover a bit on the edges so that the weeds doesn't creep in from the lawn. I've also moved some strawberries and planted them in the plastic and hopefully we can harvest some strawberries this year. Last year the weeds suffocated the plants and the slugs ate the strawberries. Then we had a visit from Mrs. Fox again unfortunately. I had just gone in and looked out through our kitchen window when I saw a trail of feathers and hysterical animals. It turned out to be our last rooster that was taken so now we have no roosters at all after all three have been taken by the fox... That must be some kind of record vecause all other years the predators have always taken the hens and not the roosters. All my dreams for ever lasting celery have been scuppered, it’s finally bolted. This bunch were the only salvagable stalks left. Everything else was munched/pooed on/home to too many snails. The main problems I have found with growing celery is that its usually bitter and quite woody so you can’t use it for just eating, it’s only good for sauces. A lot of this is down to the enourmous amount of water that it needs and probably doesn’t actually get when I grow it. That and self blanching varieties are LIES! Then, unless you’re really good at succession sowing, you end up with it all ready at once. Which means you need to have a really big freezer plus the time and inclination to deal with all. I don’t have a really big freezer, or the time or inclination as it turns out. I’ve just been using it as when I needed it but over winter it’s become a snail and woodlouse hotel, so anything I pick needs delousing and hosing down from all the snail shit. I posted a story a few weeks ago asking if anyone has ever been able to perenialise it and a few people had said it sort of has but mine was not to be.
