The female workforce participation rate (WPR) in India stands at 31.8%, which is almost half of the male WPR at 73.2%. According to a Mckinsey Global Institute study, India could boost its GDP by $2.9 trillion by 2025 if female workforce participation rate is improved by 10 percentage points. Through project Saksham, over 74 women who have the potential to be entrepreneurs were equipped with financial literacy & entrepreneurship development training and toolkits across Vijaywada and Dharwad. The 3 day training emphasized on key aspects of financial inclusion involving budgeting, investment, savings as well as highlighting on the essentials of running an enterprise. Additionally, the beneficiaries were introduced to life skills, social safety nets and linkages to social and financial schemes. According to official statistics published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 153,972 persons lost their lives in road crashes in the year 2021. This corresponds to 11.3 deaths per 100,000 population. To address this problem, under Project Four Wheels One Life over 7200 two-wheeler and four-wheeler riders were trained in safe driving practices across Thane and Bangalore. Through these sessions, the participants were trained on topics like rules of the road, defensive driving etc. Over 1,007 participants also gained practical insights through the two wheeler simulator installed at the Navi Mumbai RTO. Training women and increasing their access to livestock assets would both increase agricultural productivity and ensure an additional source of income for the households. Available data on LGBTQIA+ communities show that youth are more likely to face barriers in earning a livelihood. It’s also harder for them to find – and keep – a job, pushing LGBTQIA+ individuals further into poverty. India’s loss in GDP due to homophobia and transphobia is estimated to be up to $32 billion, or 1.7% of our GDP. India’s LGBTQIA+ economy has therefore remained largely untapped, with numerous research studies showing it to have enormous potential. Through Project Saksham, the aptitude and interests of the candidates are gauged and they are then introduced to various career opportunities, and channelize their interests towards courses. Project Poshan focuses on making villages malnutrition free. Through various interventions including the health camp and education activities, undernourished children, parents, health workers and community members have access to resources to create an enabling environment for the children to grow. The health camp included growth monitoring of the children and health check-ups by a Paedeatrician. Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) were provided with Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) packets to ensure they have access to required added nutrition. Urban centres in India are facing an ironical situation today. On one hand there is the acute water scarcity and on the other, the streets are often flooded during the monsoons. This is despite the fact that many of these cities receive sufficient rainfall. However, this rainfall occurs during shorter intervals and is of high intensity. Because of such a short duration of heavy rain, most of the rain falling on the surface tends to flow away rapidly, leaving very little for recharge of groundwater. One of the solutions to the water crisis is rainwater harvesting - capturing the runoff. Our interventions in rainwater harvesting aim to recharge ground water and also improve access to water for sanitation and other domestic purposes. As part of the project, rainwater harvesting structures are built on low - income school buildings. Mangroves are the unsung heroes of Mumbai’s coastline, keeping the city safe from floods, cyclones and tsunamis and helping reduce pollution. To celebrate the wonder of mangroves, United Way Mumbai in collaboration with the Mangrove Foundation launched a children’s picture book. The book is based on an animated video - Shorekeepers of Mumbai, created by UWM under the aegis of Mission Mangroves supported by Bajaj Electricals Limited. United Way Mumbai’s Mission Mangroves programme has been working towards rejuvenating and safeguarding our wetlands. Till date, we have planted 1.5 lakh mangroves thereby greening 33 Ha. of degraded wetlands in and around Mumbai. We now work on waste management in the wetlands to promote restoration of this ecosystem. We already know this. More than half of the work done by women in India is unpaid, and almost all of it is informal and unprotected. Women are not well represented in most sectors, including as business leaders. According to a McKinsey Global Institute study, India could boost its GDP by $2.9 trillion by 2025 if the female workforce participation rate is improved by ten percentage points. This would be equivalent to bringing 68 million more women into the non-farm labour force. When women do have income, they spend 90 per cent of it on their families, and economically empowered women boost demand, have healthier and better-educated children, and raise human development levels. India’s story of growth is incomplete without the equal participation of women. Our programmes, Saksham, Empowering Women Entrepreneurs, and Hunar, among others, work to address the barriers that restrict women from realising their economic potential. Coinciding with the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, we teamed up with SBI Capital (CSR partner) to conduct two post-immersion beach cleanup drives at Dadar and Mahim beaches. A total of 95 dedicated students joined forces, collecting approximately 35 bags of waste! Towards the end, as a part of 'Swachhta Pakhwada', we also had an enriching discussion with the students about the journey of waste from our homes to the sea, the importance of waste segregation, and effective waste management. From pre-tests to post-tests, road safety training and helmet distributions, we reached out to a whopping 8000 beneficiaries between 18 and 35 years of age in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. Did you know a simple haemoglobin test can save lives? Anaemia is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency disorder in the world. It affects all age groups, but the most vulnerable are preschool-age children, pregnant women, and other women of childbearing age. Globally, anaemia affects 1.62 billion people, which corresponds to 24.8% of the population. Our anaemia project identifies the most vulnerable members of our communities and creates awareness of prevention and treatment.
