This Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup was phenomenal… no recipe, just inspired by the “rescued” produce I had on hand! 🫑 🍅 I started by roasting 15 small red bell peppers (seeded and roughly chopped) with 2 roughly chopped plum tomatoes, 2 cups of cherry tomatoes, 6 peeled cloves of garlic, 1 tbsp @liquidgoldtastingbar Tuscan Herb olive oil, 1 tsp sugar, 1 1/2 tsp sea salt, 15 “twists” of fresh cracked black pepper, 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes, 1/2 tsp smoked paprika and 2 tsp Italian seasoning. Once the vegetables had softened and begun to release their juices, I transferred everything to a large pot and simmered with 3 cups of vegetable broth. Once fully softened, I used an immersion blender to purée the soup until smooth. I added 1/2 cup homemade oat milk and 2 tbsp of nutritional yeast (a great vegan substitute to mimic the effect of adding Parmesan rind to soup 🧀) and blended again, tasting and adding salt to taste. #零廢棄練習筆記 ep1 反正呢～雖然很嚮往零廢棄的生活型態，又覺得好遙不可及。 但也不希望因此就什麼作為也沒有，所以生活中還是悄悄的、慢慢的置入一些減少廢氣產生的行動，姑且就簡單明瞭的稱作【零廢棄練習筆記】吧！（還真的是非常的白話） #自備容器去買麥當勞 昨中午帶著小蹦去買麥當勞當午餐，出門前隨手帶了購物袋跟一個大大的保鮮盒，週六嘛～作息總是比較隨性一點，再加上前一晚被地震震的睡眠中斷，所以一家子一起睡到早上十點多才起床，到了我們出門為午餐覓食的時候也已經是下午一點半，已經過了用餐高峰。 進到麥當勞，走向人工點餐櫃檯，心裡不斷演練著要怎麼跟點餐人員提出自己的訴求，實在是非常的緊張呀！一方面擔心對方覺得我是個奇怪的中年婦女，一方面也覺得要讓他們調整習慣的作法實在不好意思，但又真的好不想帶一堆只用一下下就變得油油膩膩的垃圾回家⋯⋯在內心掙扎的五秒鐘像是五個小時那樣漫長。總算，在確認完餐點內容後鼓起勇氣，請店員幫我把所有的餐點都放進這個大大的保鮮盒裡（我用的是無印良品最大尺寸的珐瑯保鮮盒），「全部放進來都不用包裝，就是…會被丟垃圾桶的那些都不用」我這樣補充。 『沒問題喔！』 在我準備承接店員尷尬的眼神時，得到的卻是很溫和又有精神的沒問題！ 隨即接走我遞出的保鮮盒跟身後的同事交代我的需求，還在漢堡站旁邊特別叮囑不用漢堡紙。當下實在是被感動到不行，現在邊打著文字邊暗自後悔沒有看清楚他的名牌，好想幫他投稿優良員工啊！！！ 是說，因為臨時家裡沒有適合裝飲料的環保杯，所以這次雖然把漢堡、薯條、蘋果派都裝進盒子裡了，但依舊帶了兩杯紙容器裝的飲料還有一個紙袋回家，心裡暗自盤算，下次一定要再找個裝飲料的容器才行！ 以前吃完麥當勞油沾了醬汁又無法回收的漢堡紙我都會收在冰箱，等要倒垃圾前才放進垃圾袋，避免滋生果蠅，油膩膩的紙容器也容易吸引蟑螂來湊熱鬧，但像今天這樣帶著自備容器，吃不完的直接蓋上蓋子放冰箱，珐瑯材質要隔餐加熱還能直接進烤箱，吃完之後也只需要洗乾淨晾乾就行，不避勞煩垃圾桶及回收桶，清爽！ #後記 我在想麥當勞在用餐的尖峰時刻真的非常的繁忙，若是在那樣的時候提出跟往常不同的特殊作法，大概也會被覺得很捆擾吧！所以下次可能也還是會希望在離峰時段還是可以帶著自己的容器去買想吃的東西！ #zerowaste #lowwaste #practicsmakesperfect #零廢棄 #零廢棄挑戰 #零廢棄練習 #兩光太太
As we’ve navigated our first year at Staples Station, we’ve had the pleasure of serving a diverse group of customers. Throughout this time, one thing has become clear: the drop box refill system has emerged as a favorite among our regular patrons for restocking their pantries. Inspired by this feedback, we’re shifting our focus towards enhancing this service. Starting from the beginning of term 2, Sumner’s customer service will transition exclusively to a drop box system at the Sumner hub, with services provided every two weeks. A schedule will be posted on our platforms and on the drop boxes themselves. On a personal note, our family is embarking on a new journey north of Springs Junction. This move has opened our eyes to the potential benefits of the drop box refill system for rural communities, who we believe would appreciate and greatly benefit from such a service. We’re excited to explore this new opportunity and continue supporting our customers in the best way possible. Ninety percent of animal and vegetable protein samples tested positive for microplastics, teeny polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to 1/25,000th of an inch (1 micrometer), according to a February 2024 study. Anything smaller than 1 micrometer is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter. A March 2024 study found people with microplastics or nanoplastics in arteries in the neck were twice as likely to have a heart attack, stroke or die from any cause over the next three years than people who had none. While science learns more about the plastics we consume, there are things people can do to reduce their exposure, according to experts. 💚Try to avoid eating anything that has been stored in a plastic container. Look for food stored in glass, enamel or foil. 🩵Wear clothing made from natural fabrics and buy consumer products made from natural materials. 💙Don’t microwave in plastic. Instead, heat food on the stove or by microwaving in glass. 💛If you can, eat as much fresh food as possible, and limit purchase of processed and ultraprocessed foods wrapped in plastic. Hi! So I’ve been pretty rubbish at posting for a long time 😬 So what have I been up to? Well life has been quite busy… I celebrated 20 years in the ambulance service (Mr Strugnell took us all out for a fancy afternoon tea!) and started a top up degree to go from Foundation Degree to BSc (my head hurts)! I’m still buying everything secondhand, including my Blenheim Palace dress & the lime green jumper (swipe through the photos!), giving secondhand gifts & celebrating low waste birthdays! We’ve started baking bread & experimenting with Too Good To Go bags! And the best recent news… we’re getting a dog! Not a regular dog, a guide dog breeding mum dog!! . So there’s been a lot recently! 13 years ago I made the switch to a menstrual cup because I wanted to find a waste free period solution. I was cloth diapering my babies and it dawned on me I was throwing out a lot of tampons every month. Thanks to online forums I found out about the “Fly Cup” and I never went back to disposables. Over my lifetime I’ll save 6,000 tampons Today, I’d argue the best reason to use a cup is their comfort and convenience. The first two cycles with a cup were iffy for me but once I worked through the learning curve things were infinitely better! And then I found an even better fitting cup. Years later I used a new Size Fly Cup and it somehow got even better! I always tell people that no one is an expert when they switch. And usually, they’re pretty nervous. I had no idea making the switch would personally change my life in such a big way beyond just making my periods better. A few plastic-free basics I bought from @ocadouk - 1kg of wonky organic apples in a #plasticfree net by Wholegood; lots of pasta shapes in cardboard boxes by Barilla; sack of potatoes in an old-fashioned brown paper sack; Shredded Wheat (uses paper packaging, a better choice than Weetabix which uses a material made from paper and plastic so is unrecyclable) and my favourite combo for #breadmaking : @marriagesflour Very Strong Canadian mixed with Ocado’s British strong brown and yeast in a metal tin (shame about the plastic lid). First thing I ever made from scratch and the first thing we stopped buying at the store was broths/stocks. 2-3 years later and it’s still one of my favorite things to make. Don’t over complicate it. Start with where you are, with what you have. Making changes and deciding to live a more simple/homestead/heathier life doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t have to be livestock and acres of land.
