Before zipping out of Jo’burg, I had the great pleasure of popping by Stevenson Gallery to see Georgina Gratrix’s solo exhibition in Parktown North. It is no secret that I am a huge, huge fan, and I was not disappointed. Her humour is palpable, the colour sublime, and the technique masterful. The exquisite contrasting canvas sides make these works wonderfully unframable. The show follows a self-induced three-month residency in Durban, her hometown. She managed to spend her time in her former art teacher’s studio and created 19 characterful oil paintings. Incredible really! I love the stories from the painting series. One standout is the umbrella in the bouquet of flowers, which her art teacher used to prevent the flowers from wilting in the midday sun. Another favourite was her dream dinner table, made up of muses, collectors, and including Marlene Dumas, Maud Sumner, and Jo-Ann Strauss among others. I loved the series of birds seen in the wonderful KZN heat, and her work almost takes on a sculptural form. Exquisite! I can’t wait to see more, Georgina.

Considering the excitement that unfolded after the release of Ruschka du Toit’s work, I thought I’d share these stunning in-studio shots of Ruschka’s The Garden at Night show. They form a beautiful contrast against a white wall, and the kiaat frame complements them perfectly. There are five works available online. Link in bio. Search for Ruschka du Toit if you struggle to find them. What a happy sight as we lead up to the weekend 🌷

It certainly feels like winter is upon us and these gentle tones remind me of blooms as the temperature drops. While peonies don’t bloom in the winter, their lush, full blossoms remind me of the beauty and renewal that comes with the changing seasons. Peonies have a rich history and are beloved in many cultures. In Chinese tradition, they are considered the “king of flowers” and symbolize honor and wealth. I love Austen’s take on these classic blooms. Austen Gordon Simple Pleasures, 2023 Gouache on paper

One of my favourite Kirsten Lilford artworks has just returned from my framer. Pure joy in shades of pink, making reference to my picture perfect the Mount Nelson of course. Famously the Mount Nelson’s second manager, the Italian Aldo Renato, celebrated the end of the First World War by painting the hotel pink. Pink hotels became popular throughout Europe for the next few decades, and so their pink walls remained. Being my favourite colour, I am thrilled to have this pink beauty on my doorstep. . Opening on the 24th May, please join Everard Read Johannesburg @everard_read_Johannesburg in their sculpture garden beautifully curated by @stephels13 at the RMB @lattitudes.online Art Fair. . Taken from the 2022 exhibition The tenderness of ghosts, this is also the title of three life-sized dog sculptures. All made of bronze and rose quartz, they alluded to my concerns with mass extinction, and a foreboding sense of dread about future ‘ghost species’. Through these sculptures my wish was to prompt viewers to ask whether, given the Earth’s current ecological trajectory, the only animals that will remain are the ones we live with and the ones we eat. If so, will the only remaining examples of the lost natural world, one day be, the art which artists once created? My practice engages with ideas of interspecies relationships within the domestic environment, exploring the intimacy and tenderness between companion species and making visible our entangled existence. Back to work Monday, I thought I’d start your week with some beautiful visuals by Amber Moir. Today I’m reflecting on Latitude’s co-working space, which was transformed by Elisca & co, with art sourced by Source Artistry in 2022. Amber Moir’s monotypes, seen here, are a beautiful exploration of colour, form, and texture. Her technique involves painting watercolors on a sheet of polypropylene plastic, then pressing it onto calico with a 100kg pitch roller, resulting in unique and vibrant pieces. These artworks are full of unexpected outcomes and intricate details that capture the imagination. Amber’s work is a testament to the beauty of risk and experimentation in art, creating pieces that are both striking and evocative. Wishing you a happy week ahead! 📸 @danielazondagh

Isn’t it incredible what nature scenes can do for the soul? I was lucky enough to receive these nature-inspired beauties by Ludwich Olivier, all the way from Nature’s Valley, this week. His medium of choice is gouache on glass, creating a striking visual effect with the contrast between the matte finish of the gouache and the glossy finish of the glass. I thought I’d share these beautiful visuals as we start the weekend. Enjoy! This painting went through quite the process before it was finally 'ready'! At some point I despaired at ever resolving the composition and colours... We had a rough time for most of our relationship. But it was all worth it in the end and I completely love this vibrant mashup of colours, shapes and patterns.🥰😍 You wouldn't know it from looking at it (unless you're @amylee_originals or @damnitpippa who got to see the entire process in all the ugly stages) BUT that vase has been 4 different colours and had at least one other pattern painted on it before I settled on this insane-pink meets blue situation and simplified florals. I think I won that fight 😎 'Garden Treasure' ~ currently ON SHOW at @131agallery from the 18 May - 21 June 2024. 🎀 Reminder: Join myself and the other artists on show for the opening tomorrow (18 May) from 11 - 1pm and see just how bright the pink is (photo is not doing it complete justice). Oh, how chuffed I was when Jana briefed me on her vision for their newly renovated Victorian home. At the start, she oscillated between a large canvas and a salon-style wall but eventually settled on a gallery wall. Needless to say I was thrilled! Jana and I reflected on the process yesterday. She built up a collection over time, carefully selecting art that made her heart sing. Together, we created a mock wall and added a few more artworks to make it all come together. Well done, Jana! I hope this wall makes your new home feel even more special x

Also on show at @131agallery are these two smaller works, Petite Fille 5 and 6. 🌷🌷 I made these works as part of a series of mini flowers on striped backgrounds and I picked out these two green ones for the group show since I was going for a green theme! 🌿 They're beautifully float framed in oak wood and have been fitted with ART glass! 👀 Art glass means less reflection PLUS it helps to protect the art too :) Petite Fille 5 + 6 Acrylic on canvas R1750 each (DM for my catalogue and to see my other mini flower works) 😎🌷 --------------- #contemporaryart #artistinstudio #artdaily #artistsoninstagram #contemporarypainting #artcollector #painting #southafricanart #southafricanartist #capetownartist #emergingartist #artforsale #sketch #sketchbookart #sketchbookhour #arthour #southafricainteriordesign #southafricancontemporaryart #contemporaryafricanart #makingartonedayatatime

Long have I been on Shakes’ case to make his work available, and we’re finally here! I’ve been a fan of Shakes Tembani’s work for goodness knows how long: His distinctive stripes and his colours that pop. Then there is the most wonderfully kind soul behind that paintbrush. In a recent conversation at Latitude he told us about how David Hockney and Paul Smith inspired his work. Can you tell… That night he also shared this magnificent with me, so much so that I took a snap of his phone. As a bonus point, I recently saw and loved the image of a Sarah Ord interior that dons two of his 1x1m works behind a couch. This image so beautifully captured by the Vignette team has my heart. I hope you love it as much as I do x Shakes’ work is available on two sizes: 1 x 1m and 30 x 30cm

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of viewing Natasha Norman’s solo, Kala Pani - The Crossing, with the artist herself at 99 Loop Gallery. It was well worth facing the rain to see this beauty in the flesh. I find Natasha’s work is a blend of technical skills and natural inspiration. I loved the luminescence of her work, which changes as the light falls. In fact I was mesmerised! She said she used as many as ten layers to create the effect, taking up to three days per artwork. A labour of love, and boy does it pay off. The show runs until 25 May. Do yourself a favour and see it in the person x

Today I’m featuring Lara Frances’ bird series, which has been a hit, and for good reason! She is just so good at capturing the inherent beauty of birds. Golly this week has been a riot with these Gossip prints flying out. Stephanie created this oil painting in 2019, and loved it so much she turned it into a 50-edition print. It is just so expressive and joyous. Further the title gets me every time - of course I’m dying to know what the skinder is all about. For a change my framer and I framed one in ashwood yesterday, picking up the sand and skin tones beautifully. I love them both, which is your favourite? Getting ready for the opening of “I dream I’m Crossing the River”, an exhibition featuring six visual artists : Felix Shumba, Zanele Muholi, Malebona Maphutse, Maliza Kiasuwa, Thembinkosi Hlathswayo and Sthenjwa Luthuli. Through a variety of media, each of the invited artists proposes works characterized by the dreamlike aspect they contain: either by their content or by their forms. As a result, this choir of visual works emerges with an air that seeks to explore the links between dreams and violence. Indeed, the project is based on the reflections of F. Fanon in his chapter entitled “On Violence” in his famous essay “The Wretched of the Earth”. In it, the revolutionary thinker from Martinique develops the idea that the dreams of the colonized are imbued with action that their reality does not allow them to live, as they are shackled by colonial power. The various artists invited, all from countries with a violent colonial history whose consequences are still being felt today, take us into worlds where the deployment of bodies and minds counter the violence inflicted by our contemporary world, even as it claims to be “postcolonial”, producing a tension between movement and shackling. - Works shown : - Details of ‘Tissage des corps’ by Maliza Kiasuwa and ‘Reaching for stars’ and ‘Where is me’ by Sthenjwa Lutuli - 📷@kunstvanger - @maliza.kiasuwa @sthenjwa_luthuli #malizakiasuwa #sthenjwaluthuli @sorana_munsya #soranamunsya @mad_art_gallery_poznan @le_charbonnage #uitstalling #southafricanart #southafricanartist #southafricancontemporaryart #africanart #africanartist #africanartists #africanartcollector #artcollector #africanartcurator #africanartcollection #blackart #blackartist #blackartists #blackartcollectors #blackartcollector #blackartlovers #artlover #artlovers #kunst #kunstverzamelaar #kunstsammler #kunstsammlung #artcurator #belgianartgalleries @artduesseldorf @artbrussels @glean.art #contemporaryart #contemporaryafricanart

These two beautifully delicate bronze sculptures by Nic Bladen are of an Arum Lily (Zantedeschia Aethiopica) and Colpoon Compressum. Bladen is a South African artist known for his extraordinary botanical sculptures. He first trained in dental technology, a discipline that requires incredible attention to detail and precision, and later worked at the Bronze Age Foundry. By marrying the two disciplines, he pioneered the technique of casting entire plants in bronze and sterling silver, transforming molds of organic matter into unique sculptures of entire plants. This afternoon, I had the great pleasure of popping by Kagiso’s first solo show, on Cape Town St George’s Mall. This was following the successful completion of his residency at Residency 28, presented by Lemkus Gallery. Kagiso’s work draws inspiration from life and his mental health challenges about which he is quite open. Creating art is key in maintaining his mental wellbeing. Personally I am wild about his portraits. Their beautiful shapes, colours that deliver a piercing yet happy look - I can’t wait to hang mine soon! The show is open for viewing (by appointment) until Saturday, or I can send you a link to see more. Supporting young, upcoming artists feels so good. Especially when you can see the impact it has on them and their art form. I can’t wait to see what is coming from Kagiso’s studio next x

2022  Painting is entertainment for me, so it’s got to be fun! I start with one mark or a set of delicious colours. This begins a conversation of sorts between myself and the canvas. This is super exciting and I’m thrilled by the possibilities. As I make decisions to keep this mark or obscure this shape, problems start to emerge. I try to keep a cheerful attitude even when the painting starts looking terrible. At some point I think ‘oooh yuck, ok great, nothing to lose now’. This gets me excited to try something completely different and risky in order to salvage the painting. #contemporaryartafrica #southafricancontemporaryart #maryvisser #contemporaryabstraction

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to catch Shakes Tembani in action creating this masterpiece for Nando’s new Sandton store. I had to contain my excitement when I saw this unfold. I am in awe of Nando’s support of the arts and showcasing it so beautifully.

She Wolf is a superb etching by renowned South African artist, Deborah Bell.
