The 17th IICCS will be held in Orton Center on the University of Redlands’ main campus in Redlands, California. 1) Transportation How to get IICCS 2024 at University of Redlands: Airports There are several airports serving the greater Los Angeles area. The Ontario International Airport (ONT) is closest, roughly 25 miles to campus). Although Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is farther, at 84 miles, it may be the most feasible for those who are coming from other countries. Because the University has its own train station, it is possible (with some planning) to get to the University from either LAX or ONT via bus and train (see, e.g., this link provides information about getting to a Metrolink station from the ONT airport). Those wanting to take the train from LAX would first catch the FlyAway Bus to Union Station and then Metrolink from there. It is relatively inexpensive, but takes roughly 3 hours total travel time. San Bernardino Airport: San Bernardino is the city adjacent to Redlands and has a small airport served by the budget airlines, Breeze Airways. The ART/SCIENCE Project commenced earlier this year with an introductory session, where fifteen BA Fine Art Students and five STEM-based researchers from Kingston University met and presented their work. I began the session talking about my own experience as artist-in-residence at Oxford Ecosystem Labs, and how my art practise has benefited from such collaborative endeavours. We were also joined by guest speaker Liliana Colombo, award-winning filmmaker and lecturer in Film & Photography, who often collaborates with scientists and researcher in the making of her work. She often utilizes archive and found footage to recontextualize historical, social and environmental events, and her film Icemeltlandpark has been presented and awarded at numerous film festivals. Each participant presented their art practise and research, and then split into their respective group to begin dialogues, plan lab visits, and organise future meetings amongst themselves. The research topics featured in the project include ecosystem biodiversity, astrophysics and interplanetary travel, human-computer interactions, alternative modes of housing, and neuropsychology of eating disorders. It has been incredibly exciting for the project to include such a diverse array of topics, and to exhibit the resulting artworks in the upcoming ‘SPACES OF ENQUIRY’ group exhibition at the Stanley Picker Gallery, opening 4th – 9th May. . Anima part 2 - the guardian 2024 . Anima is an interdisciplinary art work that goes through various processes of creation, change and decay. All materials and components are organic and can be returned to nature at the end of their cycle. Anima is created in four main phases: Collection of natural materials, production of the face mask, elaboration of the body jewellery, completion as a wall sculpture with the possibility of complete return to nature (compostinq). The aim of this work was to “reconnect” with nature and its creations and to familiarise myself with their nature, appearance and their actual purpose. So I wasn’t just interested in creating a costume from natural materials, but rather in merging artistic research with my handcraft. A dual cycle. Nature creates, puts together, lets a guardian watch over it and brings it back again. Birth - union - creation - return. Anima represents the personification of the elements and the creation of nature. During the two-day PRI Interdisciplinary Summit, I was truly amazed and humbled by the variety of tactics and strategies employed by the 12 presenters. Their ability to think outside the box and transcend traditional methodologies was truly inspiring. The summit explored a wide array of topics including hypermobility, biotensegrity, psychology, performance, manual therapy, microbiomes, diet, and integrated PRI applications. These presentations covered an interdisciplinary perspective that emphasizes a holistic approach to health, integrating physical, emotional, cognitive, psychological, and gut health. A central theme from my personal view of this year‘s summit was the ”sense of self,“ which highlighted concepts such as interoception, detachment, dynamism, divergence, and freedom. Between a stimulus and response there is a space, and in this space lies our potential for growth and freedom. This notion from Viktor Frankl constantly reminds me to say “Yes” to life, accept our ’self‘, and value our freedom. The continuum of emotion, feeling, and thinking shapes our humanity. Our thoughts evolve into actions, which become habits that form our character. This transformative process demonstrates how our character is largely shaped by our responses to emotions. Before we delve deeper into the concept of ”position,“ it is essential to first appreciate the role of caregiving in setting the emotional state necessary for the brain to learn and explore effectively. As an ankylosing spondylitis patient, I’ve gained so many great insights from the hypermobile and the microbiome topics. I’m truly grateful that I can meet everyone in person. It is a completely different experience when you can get in “touch” with people. . Anima part 1 - the countenance 2023 . Anima is an interdisciplinary art work that goes through various processes of creation, change and decay. All materials and components are organic and can be returned to nature at the end of their cycle. Anima is created in four main phases: Collection of natural materials, production of the face mask, elaboration of the body jewellery, completion as a wall sculpture with the possibility of complete return to nature (compostinq). The aim of this work was to “reconnect” with nature and its creations and to familiarise myself with their nature, appearance and their actual purpose. So I wasn’t just interested in creating a costume from natural materials, but rather in merging artistic research with my handcraft. A dual cycle. Nature creates, puts together, lets a guardian watch over it and brings it back again. Birth - union - creation - return. Anima represents the personification of the elements and the creation of nature. sediment transport - rocks, water, erosion Here’s a slide deck from my friend Vivian’s earth sciences class, which we used as a starting point to explore movement that would look like laminar vs. turbulent flow, as well as exploring what it would be like to bring geological processes to life using dance. When little particles of silt get dragged along the riverbed, they grind against one another and become finer and finer, smoothing out their jagged edges. The ADN Pförtnerhaus in its original location in East Germany. “The guardhouse (Pförtnerhaus in German) once served to protect the staff parking lot of ADN (Allgemeiner Deustcher Nachrichtendienst) the only approved news agency of the German Democratic Republic, between 1971 and 1992. Berlin artist Christof Zwiener reached it from destruction and transformed it into a mobile residence for invited artists.
