‘Tsalwa lerintswa (the new scroll)’, a new solo exhibition by Fumani Maluleke, currently on at Everard Read Johannesburg’s CIRCA Gallery. Tsalwa lerintswa (the new scroll) is a beguiling display of the fine painter’s talent and his growing skill at manifesting arresting landscapes on these surprising and culturally significant canvasses. As the title of the show suggests, these biblical scroll-like works unroll to reveal cloudy skies casting shadows over thorn trees and patches of veld. Elsewhere, a dirt road, shepherded by old electricity and telephone cables disappears into the distance. These frozen scenes of South African country life are so familiar that it’s easy to imagine what’s happening just around the bend and beyond the frame. Dominique Cheminais (b 1984) is a novelist and painter from Cape Town, South Africa. In 2010, she had an exhibition of paintings, titled For Esme with Love and Squalor, at Blank Projects. Shortly afterwards she stopped painting entirely and dedicated herself to writing fiction. She is the author of a collection of short stories, Slim Foot on the Neck of a Dead Lion and Immovable Movers, a book of abstract poetry. Her first novel, The Animal Breaking Through the Flesh, came out in 2015 followed by her second novel Eighty-Four Thousand. Her most recent novel Indefinite Holiday will be published in the US later this year through Pig Roast Publishing. Her novel Many Shallows has provided the inspiration for her new paintings. On Saturday I painted this mural as part of the Freedom Bloc Party organised by @sisanda_myataza with a great article being written on it by @dawnlimbu in her article for the BBC. I decided to play it safe in terms of design, as when painting at a live event a lot can go wrong with a portrait! By going grey scale for the portrait simplifies the task, as does avoiding photo realism. Someone came up to me, shaking my hand and thanking me for representing their culture and making them feel home. He particularly liked the slight dip over Mandela's left eye, and described how he had met him at a rally once and shaken his hand. Adding the text was the final job, but I was nervous it would ruin it. I discussed it with someone who was quietly watching. She gave me the confidence to continue, saying that it would make it less formal with the handwriting adding an endearing personal touch, combined with a message that is still relevant today as South Africa is battling extreme inequality. In the words of Mandela himself, "after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb". Obsessed with delft me…never! The artwork is from @tisnawesterhof who was a part of the Come Dine in Blue exhibition which took place at @h.artslane art gallery. We stumbled on it from the pub, so lucky as I love this piece. The candlesticks were found in a flea market in Franschhoek the day after our wedding.
