I have fallen in love with the drum solo. It is still such a new performance / technique style to me (this is the second time I’ve ever performed one, let alone co-choreographed) I love that through the intricate rhythms the body responds in such creative and playful ways. The thing that is anchoring me during this crazy time is PURPOSE and I’ve really been reflecting on my purpose and what I can offer. Dance is my purpose and more specifically fusion belly dance. In my own practice I am drawing the connections through somatic movement into fusion belly dance, finding specific movements and muscles can unlock tension, emotion and patterns. When I think about about this dance form and learn it, I am CONSTANTLY re-wiring neurological pathways. At first this is HARD but through practice the pathways connect and what seemed impossible before now is executed with ease. You can link this to emotions and experiences where everything feels impossible. If our brain and body can master the impossible so we can master and move through our emotions. DANCE IS MEDICINE and this is my purpose to offer. . . Recently I was cleaning up my computer and sorting through all my dance content and I came across the 2nd video in this post - my January 2018 attempt at learning @rachelthebrice Changes choreography on @thedaturaonline. It felt fitting to film myself doing it now to see my progression over this time.... (don’t mind me with my little bit of improv beginning and end) anyway this is a great example for how quickly one can progress with committed and disciplined training. The video from two years ago was pre me doing any Salimpour or @zoejakes_dancecraft training and honestly these two have been HUGE influences in precision and clean technique. I still strive for faster quicker and sharper double time locks and I am eternally grateful that my habibti @bek_kelly is my dance partner in crime who challenges me to meet her in this sphere ( if you haven’t seen her locking pathways check out her instagram) I also wonder how much age also comes into this change - in the sense of movement quality and expression. Now that I am in my 30s i honestly feel there has been a shift in my dance quality and mood..
