On a Martu-led day trip out on-Country, KJ Martu Ranger Bert Lane from our Punmu team passed on traditional knowledge to junior ranger Quincy, teaching him how to hunt parnajarrpa (sand goanna). 🦎 Martu have been hunting parnajarrpa for thousands of years. This tradition is an essential part of their culture and provides an important food source. 🔥 Martu start small fires in spinifex grass to find the entrances to dens, then dig out the burrows to catch Parnajarrpa. This method is not just for hunting; it's crucial for land management. It creates a patchwork landscape perfect for mankarr (greater bilby) and other threatened species while reducing the threat of bushfires. Although they didn't catch a Parnajarrpa this time, Quincy learned about this significant cultural tradition, the sustainable land management it promotes, and his responsibility to care for Country. A few recent points! I’ve been making a bunch of points from trash lately. I find a lot of glass, tile, porcelain, etc. in the woods and I love the idea of repurposing it. Some of the stuff I come across is very old, making it even more cool!
While doing some spring cleaning I found a roll of hemp cordage. I decided to twist 8 strands together and try it out as a bowstring! I only had time to shoot a dozen or so shots through it today but it seemed to hold up great. It definitely felt a little slower and more sluggish but not terrible. If you’re looking for a natural option this might be worth messing with but honestly I’ll be sticking with my sinew string

Made a point out of some chert I found while hunting for our bison. It’s not often I’m able to find local material that’s good quality for flintknapping so it’s always a treat when I do
It’s important to work slow when tillering a bow. Keep things even and slowly work the bow down to what it wants to be. I check my bend very early on and try to get the tiller good and then it’s just a game of slowly removing material and fine tuning it. I avoid ever pulling my bow above my desired draw length and draw weight. We’ll definitely be having more bow making classes this year , building both traditional bows and survival bows. This last year he was invisible... no pictures, no sightings. We wondered where he had gotten to but these two young men discovered his bones lying not to far from my last trail cam picture while running coon dogs last evening.
