What makes Bronze? In prehistory it was copper and tin initially. While both metals are soft, when combined they make the hard alloy that was cast into moulds across Europe over 3000 years ago to produce thousands of swords, axes and other tools. Sources of copper are relatively common, especially on the western side of Britain from Cornwall to Argyllshire, but where did the tin come from? On-going research is trying to answer this question, because while copper is common, tin is far less frequent. As an ore, it is cassiterite, and is often bound up with lots of other minerals that have to be removed before smelting. Its a huge amount of effort and time involved, prospecting, mining, crushing, panning and finally smelting. It would have been a highly skilled job in prehistory that has left very little for archaeologists to find. The tin ore we offer in the Replicas Shop has been sourced from the home of tin: Cornwall. To extract the tin, it needs to crushed to a fine, flour-like powder before the heavier cassiterite crystals can be separated from the rest. Its a great material to display alongside the more obvious looking types of copper ore with a finished bronze object in between. Sling Styles 💥 Here are three different sling styles to choose from. The staff sling is very large and powerful - capable of hurling fist-sized rocks. Staff slings were used historically in castle warfare and must have been terrifying for foot soldiers and cavalry. The shepherd sling fits in the palm of the hand and can reach distances of 300 yards with golfball sized stones. Some of our shots easily cleared the river. The shotgun sling can hurl multiple smaller stones for hunting flocks of geese and ducks in flight, giving it practical wilderness survival applications . All slings take a lot of practice to aim with proficiently. It provides an opportunity to fix sharp stone or osseous tips to spears and projectiles rather than relying on sharpened wood. The two types of glue that survive prehistory are birch tar and the classic mix of beeswax and pine resin. While birch tar requires dry distilling using heat to extract it from silver birch bark, beeswax and resin glue isn't easy to source. While there was plenty of resin leaking from trees, beeswax would be a rarer find. Once produced and refined, the glue will be solid at an ambient temperature and can be turned to a liquid with heat from a fire. We started selling prehistoric glue in shells several years ago as it makes it easy to display, carry and use. The heat resistant shell is a perfect dish for holding the melting glue as is well-suited for re-tipping arrows like the Mesolithic example pictured. Prehistory is often represented by sharp tools and burials, but actually materials like glue would have been highly valued and frequently used. The process of turning a deerskin hide into a buckskin hide takes time, commitment, perseverance and guidance. My two experiences of tanning a hide are from my time at the @buckeye_gathering a week long primitive skills gathering in Norther California. Every year that I have attended, I’ve either spent the week sewing something from buckskin or tanning a hide. Choosing to spend your whole week on one project is a big commitment and not for everyone. But, my love for buckskin goes deep. The physical act of processing deerskin into buckskin ignites a primal part inside of me–a visceral feeling in my body is felt and I remember what it is to be human again. This is part of ancient wisdom that has been passed down during the evolution of our species and was once a crucial part of our survival—providing food, clothing, shelter, and tools. I’m grateful for these gatherings and the teachers and guides who continue to keep these ancient skills alive. Here's my interpretation of Ötzi's valuable chopper axe. I crafted the handle from hazel wood, shaped in the typical knee-hafting style. 🌲🦬 While Ötzi's original axe was made of yew wood, i used hazel because the yew tree is protected here and highly valued. The chopper axe head is from @altmark_bronze , and I made the birch tar myself. I added a leather band for extra security and am quite pleased with the result. What do you think? 😅 Ötzi's axe is completely intact, making it a unique find worldwide. Crafted from nearly 99.7% pure copper, the blade takes on a trapezoidal shape. The handle, fashioned from yew wood, measures approximately 60 cm long. Birch tar secures the copper blade within the slot of the handle, with additional leather strips wrapped around the shaft for reinforcement. Initially cast into a mold, the blade underwent further compression through peening after cooling. Evidence of wear indicates frequent use, necessitating regular sharpening. Interestingly, the copper used for the blade doesn't originate from the Alpine region but rather from Central Italy. A research team determined that the metal was sourced from ore found in the southern Tuscan region. I’m so grateful to have the chance to spend a month out tracking and taking @trackercertification evaluations in Southern California! . The past couple days were spent in the mountains of Cuyama County, north of LA, trailing black bears and mule deer through the high desert terrain. It’s rugged country up here, and I learned ton about how animals use the landscape by following their trails through the sandy, rocky soil. . A major highlight was trailing this large male black bear over several ridges to a den—given that he likely weighed 400-500 pounds, it was amazing how small the opening was!
