Die Schlacht um Hügel 881 N & S im Kampf um Khe Sanh, eine Basis der Marines in Südvietnam. 3520 Tonnen Spreng- & Brandbomben allein auf diesem Hügel im März 1968. Mehr als über jedes andere Einzelziel während des Vietnamkriegs. Allein am 23.März fielen stündlich über 100 Granaten auf die Basis. Das Dorf Vinh-Moc, ganz in der Nähe der Basis, litt besonders unter dem Beschuss. Pro Einwohner wurden im Laufe des Krieges etwa sieben Tonnen Bombenmaterial abgeworfen. Um dies zu überleben gruben sie im Jahr 1965 Tunnel. Oft mussten die fast 300 Personen monatelang in diesem Tunnelsystem auf drei Ebenen (12 Meter, 15 Meter & 23 Meter) leben. Das Bild zeigt den 1,55m hohen Abstieg auf 23 Meter. Heute leben die Kinder, die in diesen Tunneln geboren wurden, größtenteils in einem von ihnen gebauten Dorf direkt neben dem Tunnelsystem und den mit Gras bewachsenen tiefen Kratern. Die Krater der Basis von Khe Sanh wurden größtenteils geebnet, heute wachsen hier kilometerweit Kaffeeplantagen. Man sieht - wie überall in Vietnam!! - unglaublich herzliche und freundliche Menschen. 106/365 Faced with bombardments of ~9,000 tons of bombs. Villagers living in the DMZ (dividing north/south vietnam) sought life underground. Complex tunnels were built to house entire villages and to secretly deliver troops and ammunitions. Many suffered catastrophic collapse and some were left untouched. Vinh Moc tunnel was one of the lucky ones. It housed around 60 families. 17 babies were conceived inside the tunnels. The complex included 3 levels as deep as 30 meters. It also had 13 entrances with 7 facing the coast which provided the ocean breeze for ventilation. It eventually grew in kitchens, bathrooms, wells, and a nursery. Vinh Moc Tunnels in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) of central Vietnam: a 2km network of three levels of underground tunnels where hundreds of people escaped during the American bombing. They continued to live as normal life as possible, at times spending more than ten days in a row underground with only oil lamps as their source of light. Children were going to school there and 17 children were even born in the tunnels! Currently on Reunification Express Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) bound.
