30 APRIL 1975 – FALL OF SAIGON Just over two years after the last American troops left Vietnam, North Vietnamese forces (People’s Army of Vietnam, or PAVN) overwhelmed the last line of South Vietnamese (Army of the Republic of Vietnam, or ARVN) defenders in and around Saigon. As PAVN troops seized the capital city, the last American citizens took flight; images of the dramatic evacuation became iconic symbols of the end of the Vietnam era. Even after the withdrawal of U.S. troops in pursuance with the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, roughly 5,000 Americans remained in Vietnam, many of them in diplomatic postings at the U.S. embassy in Saigon. Without direct U.S. support, the ARVN was unable to sustain a long-term defense of South Vietnam, and PAVN forces rapidly gained ground in the spring of 1975, capturing Southern cities and triggering a massive refugee crisis. As the PAVN began the final assault on Saigon on 29 April, U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin ordered that all Americans be evacuated from the city; Armed Forces Radio played “White Christmas” on a loop to signal the evacuation’s start. With sea and land routes out of Saigon blocked, a massive helicopter airlift began. Over 7,000 Americans and South Vietnamese were evacuated through the embassy by helicopters, which landed every ten minutes for nineteen hours. The core of Saigon, along with the South Vietnamese presidential palace and other important government buildings, had fallen to the PAVN by nightfall on 30 April. This book. 5 stars. Where to begin? It destroyed me, as per usual with Kristin Hannah’s writing. The Vietnam War is an era that I knew little about beyond our vets were treated abhorrently upon their return home, it was a turbulent time at home due to the division the war caused, and that we really had no business being in Vietnam. Kristin Hannah told this story beautifully of the nurses overseas then. The stories she told were tragic but thoroughly researched. When the troops got home she chronicled their shame and experiences with great detail. PTSD (which was just a new thought not yet recognized by professional organizations then), addiction, anxiety, depression, infidelity, broken marriages, etc. I learned a lot from this book and it choked me up so many times, and despite how much I cry in real life, I rarely cry over books. This one will stay with me for a long, long time. Thank you to each Vietnam vet who served- your sacrifice is not forgotten. SAIGON APRIL 29, 1975: THE FALL OF SAIGON- One of the most iconic photographs of the fall of Saigon was taken by Hubert Van Es, of an Air America (CIA) helicopter precariously perched atop a building, with the pilot leaning out to help a long line of people scrambling up a wooden ladder before the fall of Saigon. The famous photo was said to be mis-marked when sent over the wire services. Many news outlets captioned the location as “the American Embassy,” which was actually located a few blocks away. The building was an apartment complex – the Pittman Apartments, one of several designated pick-up spots around Saigon for, “Operation FREQUENT WIND,” the plan to use helicopters from the Marines and Air America to ferry out US personnel (and as many South Vietnamese as possible) to US Navy ships of the 7th Fleet off the coast. The Pittman building has also been erroneously dubbed, the “CIA Building.” In actual fact, some CIA personal lived in apartments and some did have offices there but the majority were USAID mission workers. (United States Agency for International Development) It was not the headquarters of the CIA in Saigon. “Now” photo note: The Pittman building is still an apartment building. Rumor has it that the building is scheduled for the wrecking ball. Today is the 49th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. In real-life, this day is particularly hard for my family. Last week my mom told how she feels like she lost her country on that day and still doesn’t feel like she has a “home” country. She’s an American citizen. I’m born here. She’s lived here for 46 of her 76 years of life, and yet she still feels lost to an extent. She said that so many Vietnamese people of her generation who are so happy to be here, still feel sad and lost because of this day. When ‘Reunion’ gets made, you’ll get to see how I imagined the pain. When I asked my parents about their five years apart due to war, they usually talk about the “things” that happened everywhere else. They don’t talk about this day. 49 years later, I think this day is still too painful for them, so they focus on the day they were reunited. There are some tidbits here and there, and those make it into the script, but I had to use a lot of empathy to convey these scenes. I imagined being so close to reuniting only to see their lives completely fall apart. I imagined my dad as a husband and father waking up in the morning not knowing if he’d ever see the loves of his life again. Or my mom, as a wife never hearing her husband’s voice again. Or as a child, if my sister would ever get another hug from her dad. It tore me apart. I cried so much. I cry so much when I re-write these scenes. It’s 49 years today when the war in Vietnam ended and Saigon fell. Each year around this time, I reflect and look back on my family’s escape from war-torn and communist controlled Vietnam. It’s triggering and it’s painful. Painful for the loss of innocent lives and the hundreds of thousands who perished at sea during the conflict. And mourning for the loss of my mother who died last year, and my grandmother who died two weeks ago. But I am also thankful and grateful. Grateful that my mother chose this “island’ far away from wars, to seek refugee settlement in. And I remember praying for no more wars when we first landed here. Australia gave us the opportunity to rebuild our lives; we learned to integrate, learned English, and learned to navigate this new cultural frontier trying desperately to find ways to “blend” in, with our dark hair, almond eyes and olive skin. The journey hasn’t been smooth, nor straight forward. But it has been a rewarding experience, growing and evolving as we learned to adapt, learned to speak, learned to be comfortable in our skin and accents and now contributing back to this wonderful society. And now being the first ever refugee of Vietnamese background to be elected into Federal Parliament, I can put my hands on my heart and say - thank you to the Australian community for giving me the opportunity to represent them and share our unique talent and stories to the rest of the country. In the photos are photos of my late mother, my sisters in refugee camps, the piece of paper that Australia issued to start our new life, and my election to Federal Parliament in May 2022. I want to also pay tribute to the Vietnam Veterans in particular, for the personal sacrifices they have made, who fought to protect our freedom and contributed to the life we have today. Visited the Big J(BB-62 USS New Jersey) in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. She's drydocked in the very dock in which she was built, drydock number three. Her hull is being cleaned, inspected and repainted. They're also replacing all the sacrificial zinc anodes with aluminum ones that are more effective in the fresh waters of the Delaware River. I believe they're also installing new teak decking. I'd love to take the drydock tour to get up close and personal with the underside but that's not happening. Dịp này làm artwork thể hiện lại hình ảnh biểu tượng của ngày thống nhất đất nước vào giữa trưa lúc 11h30 ngày 30/04/1975 khi xe tăng Type-59 mã 390 đi trước húc thẳng cổng phụ của Dinh nhưng bị kẹt, sau đó người đồng đội T54-843 là người húc thẳng cổng chính tiến vào Dinh. Nhưng đồng chí đại đội trưởng Bùi Quang Thận của chiếc 390 đã kịp thời nhảy khỏi xe tăng tay nắm chặt lá cờ giải phóng tức tốc chạy vào tìm đường lên tầng thượng hạ cờ VNCH và vung cao lá cờ nửa đỏ máu nửa xanh trời của giải phóng quân kết thúc chế độ VNCH ở miền Nam Việt Nam !! Nếu chỉ một mình sức mạnh quân đội Bắc Việt thì không thể nào là đủ mà còn những đóng góp rất to lớn của đồng bào miền Nam thể hiện sự đoàn kết, đồng lòng hướng tới mục tiêu chung của cả một dân tộc đã tạo nên một trong những hình ảnh đi vào lịch sử mà mình đã lựa chọn để thể hiện lại qua góc nhìn của một người con đất Việt về hình ảnh lịch sử ngày hôm đó - 30/04/1975 Cứ sau mỗi lần làm artwork lịch sử càng có cơ hội để tìm hiểu và nghiên cứu thêm về lịch sử nước nhà, hay quá đi chắc sau đá sang nhà sử học rồi viết văn nhỉ haha !? And only the Americans had bombs.” This is a story of a deeply unpopular war from the perspectives of the women who were there - although if the propaganda of their own government is to be believed, they were never there at all. We follow Frankie as she becomes a combat nurse during the Vietnam War, after very basic nursing training and next to no experience. The first part of this novel, where Frankie is chucked right into the brutal reality of combat nursing in Vietnam was so vivid and easily my favourite part of the book. The women’s war, reception of returning servicemen and women, mental health, perceptions of heroism, PTSD, romance, racism and many other themes are explored deftly, this is a multi-layered novel that somehow manages to not feel overcrowded. Was it my favourite Kristin Hannah? No. But did I thoroughly enjoy it? You betcha. But I do have to say…. بدأت في الولايات المتحدة، في عام 1963 حركات احتجاجية رافضة لتدخل الدولة العسكري في حرب ڤييتنام. أطلقت المخابرات المركزية العديد من الإشاعات لإفشال تلك التحرّكات، فاعتبرت الهدف منها ضرب القيم الأخلاقية للمجتمع الأميركي. لأوّل مرّة في تاريخ الحروب، نقلت وسائل الإعلام وقائع الحرب، ما ساهم في تأجيج نقمة الرأي العام وانتشار روح التمرّد والسّخط في أوساط الشباب والحركات الطلابية، التي التقت مع حركات شعبية وحقوقية وتنظيمات (حركات نضالية حقوقية وحركة الـ Hippies..). ثمانية من المحتجين أحرقوا وفجروا أنفسهم، احتجاجًا، وكان أشهرهم نورمان موريسون (31) عامًا، الذي فجّر نفسه في 2 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 1965 أمام البنتاغون. وقد أطلقوا في شمال ڤييتنام اسمه على الشوارع ونظموا القصائد تخليدًا لذكراه. عمّت المظاهرات كافة الولايات الأميركية، وكانت مظاهرة واشنطن في أكتوبر 1967، أكبر مظاهرة مناهضة للحرب في التاريخ الأمريكي، اعتُقل فيها أكثر من 600 شخص من المشاركين الذين بلغ عددهم مائة ألف شخص. وقد وثّق أحداث ذلك اليوم نورمان ميلر في روايته "جيوش الليل“. تحوّلت صورة شابة تدعى جاين روز تحمل بيدها وردة في مواجهة الجنود المسلحين، إلى أشهر صورة في تاريخ تلك الاحتجاجات التي استمرّت حتى عام 1973، تاريخ انسحاب الولايات المتحدة من الحرب، بعد مقتل حوالي 60 ألف قتيل، و300 ألف جريح، ومئات الآلاف من الجنود المدمنين على المخدرات والذين يعانون من مشاكل خطيرة في التكيف مع الحياة المدنية، وقد عُرفت هذه الظاهر بـ”متلازمة ڤييتنام“. #vietnamwar 🇻🇳
Vintage European Alps Mountain Wool Pants (1960s) Very interesting pair of European hiking/mountaineering pants. These pants are from the post war period and are based off military pants of European Alps mountaineering units (Italy/German/Switzerland/Austria). It is difficult to tell exactly the providence of these pants, as all of the respective military units of the aforementioned countries share a very similar design for their uniform. These pants feature a wool construction, with the typical rounded bottom (meant to be tucked into boots), straps to tie the bottoms, welt pockets, wide belt loops (for military belts) and nice darts in the front and back.
