“An outstanding number of boxes!” That’s what Virginia Peninsula Foodbank CEO and Penn State alum @ReneeFigurelle said about our chapter’s volunteer work on Saturday, April 6, 2024. Nearly a dozen alumni and family packed up 240 boxes of food items they call the Emergency Food Assistance Program Boxes. The boxes are distributed through its Mobile Pantry Program where neighbors in need go through a drive thru to receive food assistance. 240 boxes provides about 6,500 meals, according to Renee, who said, “WE ARE Feeding our Community! Thanks so much to all who participated, it was a great to see everyone. We can’t do our work without volunteers”. Exciting news! Virginia Peninsula Foodbank's Culinary Training Program is now an Approved Program by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation for the next 3 years! Since 2011, this program has empowered economically disadvantaged adults through this 𝙁𝙍𝙀𝙀 12-week culinary education program, offered four times a year. Under the guidance of an executive chef, our students learn essential culinary, food safety, and life skills, such as leadership and financial planning. These vital tools help them secure stable full-time employment and become self-reliant. The Black Panthers started the first and most successful Free Breakfast for Children Program in 1969. Deeply valuing education, the party understood that children must be well-fed to learn successfully. This program brought attention to the limited scope of the national School Breakfast Program, which was limited to a few rural schools. Later, it helped pressure Congress to authorize the national School Breakfast Program for all public schools in 1975.
