Our long-time guest was gifted her parent’s wedding rings by her mother. Her mom wanted her to have something that she could wear every day as a remembrance item. What better way than to have the rings combined into a pendant that she could have close to her at all times? We combined the two rings while saving the meaningful engraving that was inside. 90 years ago, the culminating architectural achievement of the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, the reconstructed Royal Governor’s Palace opened to the public as an exhibition building. The original early Georgian-style building was begun in 1710 and was destroyed by fire in 1781. Reconstruction of the Palace was made possible by archaeological excavations of the original foundations, research revealing architectural images on the Bodleian Plate, the Frenchman’s Map, and the floor plan sketched by Thomas Jefferson in 1779. Further significant information about the Palace and its furnishings was found in journals of the House of Burgesses, estate inventories of former governors, and other colonial records. ~ “Midnight Conversation” is the name of the scene molded in relief on this stoneware mug, after a work by William Hogarth (1697 - 1764). A table with punch bowl is the center of a group of six men, a woman, a child and a dog. Flanking the scene are panels of wild animals, fish and birds. The saltglaze original of this adaptation mug was made in Staffordshire circa 1756. Hogarth applied an ironic title to his representation of men drinking in a paneled room perhaps intended for St. John’s Coffee-house, Temple Bar, London. The clock indicates four in the morning and eleven men are shown around a table in different stages of drunkenness, having gathered at midnight. A punch bowl decorated with Chinese figures appears at the center of the table, and empty bottles piled on the floor and mantelpiece testify to many rounds of punch consumed, as does the overflowing chamber pot at lower right. Britain at this period followed the Julian calendar, according to which New Year’s fell on March 25th. Tonight in the Custis Tenement Garden in CW 🌷 We’re nearing the end of tulip season in Williamsburg, but there are still pockets of them here and there. . A bit of history… John Custis acquired this lot in 1714 and it is one of several properties that he rented. Custis himself lived off Francis Street, and one of his passions was tending to his four-acre garden. In fact, he is arguably the most famous gardener from this time period in Virginia, having imported more European plants into the tidewater than anyone else. His collection of lilacs was considered the best in America. The present day garden that can be seen and enjoyed from Duke of Gloucester Street was designed by landscape architect Arthur A. Shurcliff during the 1930s.
