Feel like you have low iron but all you keep hearing is your bloodwork is normal? In some cases, more thorough iron testing needs to be completed. Typically, our iron is assessed through a CBC including hemoglobin and hematocrit (which looks at whether your body is anemic) and/or through ferritin (a marker of iron). However, there can be times where this misses iron. A CBC will only identify low iron if someone is in an anemic stage (meaning very low iron), however, many people will experience symptoms far before this. Ferritin, while a great marker of iron, is also an inflammatory marker and so can be falsely elevated if inflammation is present in the body. This can lead to individual’s thinking iron is okay, when in fact it is not. If your ferritin on bloodwork is below 100 and you wonder if you may be deficient, testing Iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation can also provide information. Iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation are also markers of iron. Today is the last day of Caesarean Awareness month. We wanted to commemorate this by sharing Dr. Denise’s story. Dr. Denise has had two cesarean births, her second and third child. One cesarean was after a failed ECV attempt for breech baby and the other was an emergency cesarean due to a placental abruption. Birth is unpredictable which can be very difficult and however a Mama gives birth, she should be proud because it is hard and there can be obstacles to overcome.
