Happy Christmas Eve! It’s the last day of the #adventweddingchallenge and the theme is ‘what next?’ Well, let me tell you what’s next. A well deserved rest, hunners of time with family + friends and not one bit of work until the New Year. We’re officially AFF OAN HOLIDAY! But before we go we absolutely have to share some photographs from Stacey + Steven’s epic wee day at one of our favourite venues; The Cromlix <3 The most special wee day with Stacey, Steven, wee A and the rest of their families! The Cromlix does not mess about when it comes to Christmas, it looked absolutely stunning. I don’t do resolutions/goal setting/objectives/stats anymore. It truly doesn’t work for me and serves as nothing but a way to make me feel as though I’m failing. And so, the more of life I live the more I reject that, trying instead to tune wholly in to the present. What’s Next is an open book. I know that we have things to look forward to; going to Thailand and Mallorca as well as so many wild and adventurous weddings at home. I’m more and more interested in working with people like me; the neurodivergents, the international feminists, the lgbtqia-pluses, the sads, the little bit witchy, the little bit earthy, the über-nerds. We have a tendency to label ourselves as a style or a price bracket in this industry. We are ‘dark and moody’ or ‘light and airy’ or ‘high-end’ or ‘editorial’ or ‘fine art’ or ‘documentary’. I’ve always struggled with defining myself, and I want to embrace being all *and* none of the above. Instead choosing to feel the moment and understand what it calls for. I want to do better when I can. Learn more when I’m able to. Enjoy that some days I’m a productivity MACHINE and some days I bring all the energy for my clients and some days I’m horizontal and non-verbal. And every one of these days is equally important. I’d like to be able to pay our bills and save for (one day please) buying a home and give what is left. I hope to continue to grow. DAY 23: Thank You!! A massive thank you to everyone who has supported by business, I love you all!!! The past few years since the pandemic has been an absolute rollercoaster and I feel so blessed that you all have stuck around for the ride. I’ve photographed 21 weddings, 7 family photoshoots, 3 proposals and 3 couple shoots this year. It’s been much needed to recharge and focus on my own wedding. I photographed 49 weddings in 2021 and 52 in 2022 due to all of the covid postponements. My usual number is around 25-30 per year! I was so burnt out coming into this year and my health and mental health was in a pretty bad way. I’ll be sticking to around 20-25 weddings and a few other photoshoots moving forwards. I feel this year I’ve had the right balance of being busy plus also having the energy and creativity for all of my couples and clients. QUIET // There is so much beauty in stillness, something I’m working so hard to practice. I am a million miles a minute kind of human, someone who always needs a project or a problem to fix. It’s why the fast-paced world of weddings is such a beautiful fit - I’m constantly moving and engaged and shooting and fixing. But when quiet comes and I allow myself to embrace it, when I breathe deep and let myself observe my surroundings, magic is found. In work I look for these pockets of air, I gulp them down and freeze these moments, choosing instead to document the in-between and what glorious beauty that space contains - like a ring bearer already too knackered to perform his one job.
22. Quiet… Wedding days are busy. All that excitement, emotion and adrenaline… I never take couples off for long. Maybe ten minutes… just to give them time to take it all in and spend some time alone together. I don’t force poses. This time is all about the two of you. A time to catch up and chat about everything and anything. Day 22 - Quiet Weddings aren’t always go, go , go... there are always natural lulls in the action, these usually happen in the evening after the food and before any dancing kicks off. I find it so interesting to see what guests get up to during this time! It’s always a fun challenge to photograph this part of the day as you have to observe the scene closely to find interest and a unique point of view. . . . . Day 22 of the #adventweddingchallenge is ‘quiet’ and I immediately thought of Team Burke. Weddings can be overwhelming for babies under normal circumstances let alone when they are feeling poorly like wee Ben did, wee soul. It’s really important to Liam and I that we are authentic when it comes to what we are photographing, so I’m so glad Lauren + Scott were open to me coming to their wee chalet while they had some time out with the wee man. Story time… I’m currently getting my ideas together for my end of year blog post. With just one wedding left to shoot in 2023, there is a literal wintering that begins to take place in my home but also in my work. This was the first true wedding season in a post-pandemic world and the work has fundamentally changed, in most ways for the better. I’ll share more in the final blog but here’s what I’ve learned in 2023: ✨ I can say no and that can be a complete sentence ✨ I can say yes - even when it makes me nervous - and there’s value in being brave at 38 ✨ Slow. The heck. Down. ✨ My body is physically stronger than I ever knew to be possible ✨ My heart is more delicate and deserves grace and care ✨ Finding creative projects separate to the work will ALWAYS make me better at the work. Stepping back then leaning in keeps me inspired and creative. ✨ Being generous with my time, energy and experience is a gift I have loved this year so so much, I cannot wait to share the longer lyrical waxing but always, forever, I literally cannot do this unbelievable work without you. So thank you, my sweet loves, for being so generous and open with me.

Day 21 of the advent wedding challenge is story time, so I thought I’d share a little about me.. 📷 I fell in love with photography at college, back then we shot on film cameras and there was something so magical about processing my own film and developing my own photos. 🐈⬛ 🐈 I’m a cat mom to my two beautiful furbabies @dexterandbrodie 💒 I fell into wedding photography by accident, when I started my photography journey I never wanted to photograph people. Then I was asked to second for another local photographer which is where I fell in love with photographing weddings and the rest is history, and I’ve been running my own business now for nearly 9 years. ⛰️ I love hiking, travelling and exploring new places. 📚 I’m a book nerd, for the last few years I’ve set myself a reading challenge. I’m currently reading book 21/23 for this year. 📺 Gilmore Girls, Greys Anatomy and Buffy are my fave programmes. 📍 I moved to Shropshire in 2006 and met my husband where I worked. We’ve been married now for just over 10 years. 📷 I hate having my photo taken, like really! I find it extremely difficult to be in front of the camera, but have pushed myself this year to do it. So when you tell me you’re nervous or not so confident in front of the camera, I hear ya, and promise that I will make it stress free and fun for you as possible! Day 20: IT’S LIKE RAIN ☔️ Even in the height of summer, it’s wise to have some brollies on hand if the forecast hints at rain. White or clear umbrellas are best for your photos together, but don’t worry about colourful brollies ruining pictures. If it’s raining hard, having an umbrella gives you far more freedom than none, and aesthetics aren’t that important. If your guests see you heading out into the weather, you can bet they’ll follow! WANT MY ADVICE? // Day 18 of the #adventweddingchallenge is a prompt to impart some wisdom. And after over ten years of wedding work - and nearly thirteen (!!!) of real-life marriage, here’s want I’ve got: 1. Say no, say it often. And say YES to wedding party outfits that make your squad feel AMAZING and comfortable supporting you so that when we take their photos, they SERVE . Say YES to feeding everyone pizza or tacos or a full plant-based menu or any damn thing you love because a free meal is the best part of the day. Say YES to bright and bold florals or dried flower installations or no flowers at all if your hayfever is brutal. Say YES to converse or combat boots under your wedding dress. Say YES to anything that gives YOU joy. 2. That’s it. That’s the best advice I’ve got: say no and say YES. Your wedding doesn’t need the added pressure to be the best day of your life. HOWEVER. Imagine it is??? Because you said no or you said yes.

Day 19: Intimate There’s no secret that I absolutely love an elopement and intimate wedding ✨ We are so lucky in Scotland with the incredible backdrops of historic buildings, ruins and the scenic mountains. One of my first weddings I photographed was on a beach in Arisaig in the Scottish highlands over 10 years ago. I’ve always had a strong sense of adventure and followed in my footsteps of my grandparents climbing Munros. Erin and John came over to Scotland from Texas and went for an intimate wedding in Glencoe. They had no guests and committed to each other in the most intimate and special way with a humanist ceremony. They drank from a quaich and were handfasted before exchanging rings and their personal vows. The weather was not on our side with torrential showers, but eloping allowed us to be flexible on their timeline working around the weather. The dark stormy clouds making for drama in their photos. Details and ephemera on a gray winter's Monday. I missed the weekend of prompts for my #adventweddingchallenge but day 17 was The Juicy Details and to be honest, it's one of my favourite parts of the day to shoot. Time stops for a minute, the pieces that make a wedding are still life, uninterrupted before picked up for purpose: shoes are put on and fastened, a candle is lit, a seat found. All of those small choices you make in the lead-up to your wedding are found and lovingly archived by me.
Day 18 of the #adventweddingchallenge is WANT MY ADVICE? And tbh I don’t think I’ve met anyone that would say ABSO-BLOODY-LUTELY to that but here you go, in the name of the advent we’re doing it! Do. It. How. You. Want. That’s it. Fiona + Scott did. They didn’t mind seeing each other pre-ceremony, so they did. They wanted to change their surname to something new, so they did. They didn’t want a cake cut, so they didn’t. Fiona wanted to wear a jumpsuit for dancing in (and flat shoes!) so guess what? She did. Take the bits of weddings you like, ditch the bits you don’t. All those little changes that made their day more them, and it still looks like a belter of a wedding, doesn't it? Oh my golly gosh. No words can describe these two. From the moment I first spoke to them I knew this day would be everything they’d dreamed of. They did everything THEIR WAY. Day 18 - Advice? I could literally talk for hours about what to do/not to do at weddings, but the bottom line is that it’s is your day, and you need to keep that in mind when planning!! A prime example of this is that I’ve always told my family I want a drag queen celebrant to “marry us” and have the legal ceremony before hand, when I told my grandmother this she immediately said “oh what is wrong with you, that isn’t a wedding!!” - then what is Jean? What in your eyes is a wedding?🌝😬 If I can’t do something I want on MY wedding day, then when can I do it? Day 17: YOU’RE SO GOLDEN ☀️ One of my favourite ever golden hour photos - Jo, Greg and all their cows. Golden hour light is completely different to any other part of the day, and it can’t be replicated with editing. So if these super warm, hazy, lovely pics are something you want, make sure to factor time in to your day (in hopes the weather is kind and gives you golden hour!). TOP TIP: As sunset often happens after your meal, it means you’ll have got big things like speeches out of the way. With all my editing finished for the year I am mostly spending my time watching all the Christmas movies with the kids and doing random crafts and even some baking. Looove a bit of golden hour photos! Just remember though that if you're getting married in winter then it will likely be earlier or not happen at all. However, if you miss it while eating or being busy or it's winter and overcast (or summer and overcast lol) then remember you can have your own "golden hour" with sparklers.
