55 Brighton, a 77-unit mixed-use project that marks the completion of the Packard Crossing housing development in Allston, embraces the reinterpretation of the rhythms and scale of the surrounding block while paying homage to the area’s automotive heritage. The brick detailing, meticulously designed to blend with the neighborhood’s fabric, has a distinctive fanned design that draws nostalgic inspiration from the winged tails of iconic 1950s automobiles. The façade design provides different visual experiences depending on the direction of approach along Brighton Avenue. The building perfectly blends modern design and contextual material, adding a contemporary touch to the neighborhood while complementing the existing aesthetics. The choice of brick as a façade material was cost-effective but also durable and low-maintenance, making it an intelligent choice that ensures the building’s longevity. The Belden Brick Company’s Ebony Black Smooth was one of the three brick styles carefully chosen for this project, keeping the overarching goals in mind. With its commendable features, the design by Hacin won 55 Brighton, a @brickindustry Bronze Residential Multi-Family 2023 Brick in Architecture Award.
