I was around 7 years old when I started to pay attention to the sound of drums in music. I began to notice the drummer in church and I just felt this spark that I wanted to somehow do that one day. Back in those days, my home church would often have vigils aka all nighter services. Thats where I got my start. There was no band, just someone on keys singing. One night I built up enough courage to walk up on stage to join in. I remember my foot got tired within one minute. My dad was ecstatic that I had an interest in some kind of ministry. Before he got me a drum set though, he instilled in me the need to pray for this because it’s a serious deal beyond just simply playing drums. I finally got my first drum set at 10yrs old. A couple weeks after getting my drums, word was out that that I played drums, so I started to play for the midweek service out of desperate need at church. I never stopped, I always showed up early, and willing to dive in even though I didn’t know anything. I didn’t have any resources back then. Just show up, mess up, learn, repeat. I never had the privilege of having a drum teacher. When I was in school, all I would think about was getting home to practice. I didn’t care about anything else. At 14 years old, I started to get invited to play at different churches. I’m about to be two decades into this and I remain as thankful and grateful as ever. It’s not until now in 2024 that drums are officially part of my job description, among other handy labor duties, being useful to the church with my entire being. 10 year old me wouldn’t believe how my dream finally came true. It’s never been about being the best, it’s about being useful, and having purpose. Never take it for granted, friends. Well I just dug up my confederate jasmine vine and another clump of lilly of the valley to take over to the parsonage. I sure do hope they do well! I then harvested a cup full of lilly of the valley. They’ve always been my favorite flower. .. My grandmother Maxey had them and fiddle head ferns growing all around her house. I knew whenever I saw the lillies of the valley in bloom my birthday was not far away! My grandmother also wore Muguet perfume so I always associate this flower with the love and care of my grandmother. I miss her so much! She always had a matching purse and pumps, and could cook the best rost Sunday dinner you’d ever wish to have. Of course that was after she taught Sunday school and had worked all week as the head nurse of her department.
