You've got mail. 📫 In 1991 when America Online was released, it was safe to say I never got ANY mail. Then again, I was three. However its heyday lasted until 2003 and its influence became a large part of my life and how I communicated in a tech-forward world. I'd reckon it affected many Millennials. This is the last piece of my original wood art series, "Smoke 'n' Mirrors". I specifically chose this subject and design because I wished to bookend the wood burned collection with pieces tipping my hat to where it all started. The filter of technology is a comfort to us awkward folk. It's even better for those of us who like to write. Communication is key to connection, and for some of us connection is a toughie. Sure there are nuances to how messages resonate end-to-end, but I like to think loving words in any form hold value. I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about how technology impacts the lives of Millennials, mostly because I'm a Millennial artist and well...I'm not dead yet. I'm sure A.I. will write its own next chapter. Technology keeps galloping forward and I find myself doing my best to hold onto the reins as I work for and live entangled in the cyber world. I've never been here to say if any of this is good or bad. Gather children, as I tell you what it was like to work for AOL in the 90’s. The year is 1998, in Jacksonville, Florida. I’d heard AOL was having open interviews so I presented myself at AOL headquarters with a poorly written and very sparse resume and absolutely ZERO computer experience. At that point, I hadn’t actually laid eyes on a computer since 1987. The gentleman interviewing me was very kind and didn’t even laugh once, even when he asked me what computer operating system I had experience with and I said MS DOS and Microsoft Word. He then asked me if I could give him step by step directions on the route I took to get to the building. THAT I could do. I must have done well because he stopped me before I finished to tell me I had the job. $12/hr plus full benefits, 401k and stock shares. Yes, darlings, that’s how it USED to be. Since I had no computer experience, they trained me in both Mac and Microsoft and put me in the Tech Support queue. This is when I was told why I was hired: I have a soothing voice and can talk elderly people through a process step by step in excruciating detail. No computer skills necessary. I was surrounded by arrogant IT guys who felt this position was below them, and likely it was, but I felt like I had landed the best job ever, until Time Warner. Day Nine: January 8, 2024. The sun’s rays shone brightly today, bringing a welcomed dose of vitamin C. E.L. introduced me to geocaching today. We drove around searching for different sized containers, hidden by other geocachers, using gps coordinates. We found two containers today. One container was hidden next to a light pole and the other container was hidden in the woods near a car wash. The third geocache photo was a geocache that E.L. previously found, but, decided to check on while we were in the area. Did you see the writing on the geocache container? Talk about a throwback!! Lançado em 18 de dezembro de 1998, o filme “Mens@gem pra Você (You've Got Mail )“, da cineasta norte-americana Nora Ephron, conta a história de Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan), dona de uma antiga e pequena livraria familiar, que conhece pela Internet (sem saber quem é) o dono de uma imensa rede de livrarias , Joe Fox (Tom Hanks), um concorrente que ela tanto odeia. Surge aí um “romance online” entre dois anônimos. Cheio de “simbolismos tecnológicos”, o filme retrata uma época em que Internet começava a fazer parte da vida das pessoas, com o e-mail e os “namoros online” aos poucos se popularizando. Este simbolismo também aparece nas associações tecnológicas feitas a cada personagem. O empresário interpretado por Tom Hanks, usa um IBM PC rodando o sistema Windows, enquanto a livreira, encarnada por Meg Ryan, operava um Apple MacBook.
