An Egyptian Story (Youssef Chahine, 1982) A worthy, if surprisingly unusual second entry in Youssef Chahine’s autobiographical Alexandria Quartet of films. Now played by veteran Egyptian actor Nour el Cherig, we find Chahine’s cinematic alter-ego Yehia Mourad as a successful director, albeit one alienated from his wife and children. As he undergoes heart surgery abroad however, he finds himself reliving formative moments of his life and career as he hovers perilously close to death. Chahine very much takes an apparent affinity with the director Federico Fellini in crafting what is essentially his own 8 and a Half: a sprawling and fantastical piece of autocritique in which its director probes his childhood traumas and the post-colonial history of Egypt as key markers for his own art. It may not quite match the aspirations of the films it takes influence from, but it’s definitely the best of Chahine’s colour films that I’ve seen, as well as a surprisingly bold examination of its creator’s most deeply personal anxieties and insecurities. This is the Hadoutta of Kilim. The word “Kilim” is believed to be of Turkish, Persian or Mongolian origin. Uncovering the exact origins of kilim is not easy since no record of their construction can be accurately traced. However, they are considered to have been around since ancient times and one of the oldest Kilim rugs that still remain to this day, is believed to be from the Ottoman period. Researchers relate some of the known historical finds and different phases of kilim production to discoveries at Fostat in Egypt where flatwoven textiles dating from the 7th to the 11th century BC and earlier were found. Kilim weaving techniques were highly developed between the 7th and 18th centuries. Seljuk, Ottoman, Mongol, Safavid, Mamluk, and various North African cultures uniquely contributed to this art form. The flat-weave technique - the pulling and intertwining of the threads - causes the rugs to be thin and light. The finishing of these rugs is smooth yet tough, making Kilim very durable and at the center of day-to-day life. Traditional Kilim designs and motifs symbolize certain beliefs of their makers. Some examples include protection from evil & the evil eye, fertility & good luck charms. In the past, kilim weaving had an important role in women’s life and it was a major part of their dowry. With time, mixed marriages among different tribes greatly affected the style and aesthetic of Kilim, as well as its function. For thousands of years, kilims have been woven to serve utilitarian purposes. However, through history, Kilims have also been enjoyed for their great beauty and unique aesthetic.
