This semester I’ve spent COUNTLESS HOURS staying on top of my school work. I “locked in” with my favorite people at our favorite study spot and that pushed me SO. MUCH. Some days were harder than others. Some days I would have to wake up at 5am and go to bed at 11pm. Some days I felt BURNTTTT OUT and literally could not bring myself to do my school work. This was my first time taking this many classes. I passed them all! Mostly B’s with 1 A from the math class I retook because I failed last semester. HUGE WIN BY THE WAY. I wish u had more A’s but honestly.. I’ll take it💀 these classes will forever traumatize me. Trauma from calculating enthalpy change and the rate of reactions, to literally EVERYTHING in biology (I really sat here and thought we were gonna learn about plants and animals like how I did in highschool. NOPE LMAO) . I’m very proud of myself and the amazing individuals I work with. I only have one more class to take over the summer before going to THEE FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY IN AUGUST. Tech Rec #3 New Puppy 101 Congratulations! You just got a new puppy. This is an exciting (and also anxiety inducing) moment for any future pup parent. You’ve done your research and found the perfect breed that fits your lifestyle or your family, you’ve searched the internet for an amazing reputable breeder, and now you have this sleepy ball of fur right In front of you, what now? Vet visit basics: At the clinic I work in, we usually like to see puppies when the owner has had it for a few days or a week so the owner can fully take note of what normal and abnormal behaviors look like in their new puppy. Your veterinarian look the puppy over and make sure there’s nothing abnormal about it and to probably administer some vaccines. It is always important to consult with your veterinarian about vaccines and the puppies past medical records because some puppies might’ve even gotten them earlier. “Can I socialize my puppy right now?”: Not really a good idea! Most veterinary professionals would advise against it because a puppies immune system isn’t strong enough to interact with other dogs. A lot of professionals will recommend the owner to wait until the puppy is fully vaccinated before socializing. “My puppy has so much energy, what should I do?”: Well it is a puppy after all. They have a lot of energy and they are very playful. It’s always a good idea to play and interact with your puppy, you can even begin training as soon as possible to correct any bad behaviors. Side note, it is very importantly for any future pet owners to do research on certain breeds because different breeds have different energy levels. This is a really short post, but honestly everything will work out with research and talking to your vet. Be sure your puppy is on a good diet, is healthy, and all will be well! I figured I would wrap up the internship review with pictures from one of my favorite days. A pretty nasty snow storm a few days before meant no usual riding lesson, but the snow out in the pasture was just right to pull sleds. So we got the horses ready, worked on some bareback riding in the arena in pairs, then took turns having Michelle and Sahara run us around the pasture. I was the test guinea pig since this was Sahara's first time being the horse to pull the sled, and while I may have eaten a bit more snow than intended being downwind of her hooves, it was the most fun I've had in a long time. An added bonus of Michelle's herd were the two mule goals, Cluasa and Auribus. When I had started the Equine Science program at CSU, my main areas of interest were equine reproduction and rehabilitation, so getting to work with two foals hands on for the first time (mule foals at that) was an amazing opportunity. When I started in August the foals were just shy of 6 months, so we got to work with them on halter breaking, weaning, and other basic ground manners like standing for the farrier. Both foals went to auction in 2023, and have gone on to new homes. Because of these foals and the interns, Michelle discussed the possibility of fostering more foals through rescue programs, and has gone on to bring in multiple foals/weanlings/yearlings since these two left! For me, the biggest part of this internship was being able to ride, even if it was only once a week. Horseback riding lessons, even beginner level, can be out of budget for most people, let alone a bunch of college students who can barely afford their tuition and housing. Everyone's first day riding would be spent with Michelle assessing what you already knew and how you could improve, and then coming together to learn something new. Before this internship, I'd never done anything other than a short nose to tail trail ride, and by the end I could handle both English and Western tack, comfortably ride a walk/trot (let's not speak about my canter), and had tried my hand at pole work and mounted games. Even though that might still be leagues below your average rider, it was more than I had any hope of learning before 30, and opened me up to be able to take paid lessons in the future. Now that everything is all said and done, here was the highlight of my 2022-23 academic year: my equine internship. All equine and animal science majors at CSU are required to participate in an internship in their desired field before graduating. Although CSU has many public and private partners offering these internships, for people like me who didn't come to CSU already having tons of animal/equine experience, getting those internships are entirely out of reach. This is exactly why an employee at CSU, Michelle, offered up her and her herd to host an internship specifically designed for beginners. This meant that we had a mix of animal science majors looking to learn about horses and equine science majors who needed more experience either with ground work or work under saddle that couldn't get help elsewhere. Michelle, her husband Micheal, and her entire herd were incredibly accommodating for a group of college students, and this first batch of interns has convinced her to keep hosting students for many years to come! It's people like Michelle who keep the equestrian and greater agricultural community alive, and I know every intern she's taken in from then until dhe stops will go on to do incredible things, all because someone decided to take a chance on them. We did everything from hand walking to grooming to lunging to riding to handling foals to cleaning tack and everything in between. As her interns have grown, she's organized trail rides and other field trips, all to let students experience new things in the industry. (SWIPE TO SEE) This is Coconut! On February 10th, he came in because he had a big belly and it seemed to be growing. The doctor did her exam and had suspicions of this viral disease called Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). We got to do all the diagnostic tests and things we needed to do (bloodwork, X-rays, got some fluid from his belly) and the final verdict was…. He indeed had FIP. It was an interesting case for me because I never heard or seen anything like that before. I got to learn more about what to look out for and symptoms that can appear in FIP cats. I’m back, I took a few months away from social media to focus on being stable in school. I’m very happy to say that I’m surviving 5 classes + my job as a vet tech 🙏🏾 I’m learning so much from those around me, strengthening relationships with my friends, and preparing for university 🧡💚🐍 I feel like my skills have improved as a tech. I am going to start offering group workshops to teach you how to find schools like this starting next month. Most kids who like animals become a vet or major in biology and then don’t know what to do after. If you have a favorite animal you can do research to find d schools that have labs, research centers, and most of all….grants and endowments to conduct research about that animal. I hear so many people talking about ranking and trying to get into the best programs. Best is soooo subjective. You can get into the best biology program in the nation and it is not best if they are funded to research human biology, plant biology, or a special animal like birds, fish, elephants, etc if your favorite animal of choice is bears. Yea you may have classes about a lot of other things but what this means is instead of doing just plain biology it even animal science you are studying wildlife, ecology, and conservation. And people on campus also share a passion for bears and have over $1 million dollars to dabble in it while you are on campus. This means research you hear about and participate in could be about bears. Experiences, internships, field work, could be about bears. This could be one of the best school for a black bear lover even if it is ranked far down otherwise for most people. Nothing about their course list online will tell you they have a specialty in Bear Research so you have to really dig into these schools and I am going to show you how. I am a woman in agriculture. I've heard the statistic that less than 2% of the U.S. population farms repeatedly over and over my whole career. But no one talks about the 11% of the U.S. population that is directly employed in agriculture industry and agriculture support roles. That's 1 in 12 American jobs! I have 2 degrees in animal science and nearly 25 years' experience in helping farmers and ranchers raise their animals better, safer and more economically. I've consulted and advised thousands. I am a woman in agriculture just as much as the woman who milks cows or drives a tractor. I want my books to inspire children, especially little girls, to potentially see themselves in agricultural careers. I want them to be fascinated by the technology and geek out on the science with me. There is so much more to ag industry than working directly on the farm or being a veterinarian. I hope that I can be an inspiration and show that you don't have to grow up on a farm to make agriculture your career. 2023 has been humbling to say the least. I had so many amazing opportunities for self growth on my veterinary journey. I’ve learned, I traveled, I cried, I studied. I began working with amazing people who’ve taken the time and patience to teach me what it means to be in vet med. I made amazing connections with people who wanted a future just as bad as I did. I nurtured the relationships that I already had. I dominated in my science classes. I didn’t do so well in math but I will not let that stop me from going even harder this semester. In 4H or FFA and thinking of an animal science degree or a computer science degree? Well you can combine them both at this unique program that gives you a cutting edge for how to use technology and data to improve raising livestock. So many people hate that I share NICHE majors saying it is pigeon holing students but really what it is doing is helping them be deliberate. If a student chooses a top ranked university for computer science, they could end up working on research to create a new computer program for tracking COVID or end up at an internship at a insurance company doing actuarial work which is high paying but maybe not interesting. Instead....they can at least take a major in computer science and deliberatly attach it to an area of interst they have so they can work in a field they know something about, enjoy and can help problem solve in. All skills are transferable but being deliberate in course work like this with niche programs help you be deliberate about your learning and really get ready for work. Tech Recs Part 2: Feline Care A lot of people may not know or do this, but you can also take your cats to the clinic for a health check up! It is equally as important as getting your dogs checked. AS A KITTEN: bringing your new feline friend to the clinic will not only melt the hearts of all the staff, but it will be beneficial to start early with vaccines and preventatives! Here, your kitten will be getting their first set of shots, deworming, and you may possibly get a fecal cup sent home with you to check for any intestinal parasites. OLDER CATS: it is still recommended that you bring your older cats in for check ups! It is important to make sure they’re up to date with vaccines, and they’re in good health. Depending on the clinic, there are options for junior and senior wellness packages. The wellness packages typically send blood, urine, and maybe a fecal sample to check the overall health of your pet. The older the cat, the more important this will be. What vaccines should I expect?: FVRCP: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, and Feline Panleukopenia are all life threatening and contagious diseases that your cats are capable of picking up if not properly vaccinated against it. It is essential to start this vaccine and booster them accordingly (1 year and 3 year option) FELINE LEUKEMIA: this is yet another life-threatening virus that a cat can pick up. This is usually passed from an infected cat to another, commonly through blood, urine, saliva, and feces. I highly recommend getting this vaccine for cats who may go outside in their life time to protect them against it and stop the spread. RABIES: this is another life- threatening virus that can be transferred from animal to even people if bitten or scratched. Depending where you are, it may be a law in your state requiring you to vaccinate all pets from rabies. This is a vaccine that you can booster every 3 years or just one.

Technology is rapidly increasing, and cameras and editing software combined with AI can do some epic things. Even phones are taking professional-quality photos. Well, not mine, especially after dropping it in the toilet last month, but I digress. What all those things can't do is get into the head of an animal and make it pose for you! Pets you know better and have more time to try and capture, but if you are out on a hike or at the beach and you see an eagle or a whale, are you prepared to capture that shot? If you love trying to capture wildlife shots and are thinking about some sort of major in something related to wildlife, animals, nature, biology, etc., you can literally study with the experts in this program and do a minor in wildlife photography and use your photos to help with conservation efforts. * I am not affiliated with this program in anyway and these posts are for career exposure only. Yesterday, Nov. 8, our first homegrown calf of this year was born to Dora, a Dutch-belt/Guernsey cross cow we have had since 2019. This is her third calf and second heifer. This calf has a Dutch-belt sire and the white belt really came through for her! She has got to be one of the cutest calves out there.
