Slow-Made Tradition in Oaxaca - Part 2 💫 The overall goal of these efforts around planting and working with coyuchi and heritage white cotton is to revive and maintain this supreme natural resource as well as the traditional crafts. 🥰 Cotton was almost extinct in the past because it did not meet any demand outside of the communities. At present (thank goodness!), there is an increasing worldwide trend about slow-made things– from 🥘 food to 👕 textiles, 💅 lifestyle, and 🌀 beyond. This movement advocates awareness and responsibility, good quality, a production that doesn't harm the environment, keeping the production ethical and non-exploitative, preferably producing locally. It is about quality over quantity, tradition over trend, and community over corporations. This is how life has always been for Oaxaca, and coyuchi is a good example of it—only now it has been moved to the international stage. 💯 --- Tradición Lenta en Oaxaca - Parte 2 💫 El objetivo general de estos esfuerzos en torno a la siembra y el trabajo con coyuchi y el algodón blanco nativo es revivir y mantener este recurso natural supremo, así como las artesanías tradicionales. 🥰 En el pasado, el algodón estaba casi extinto porque no había ninguna demanda para ello fuera de las comunidades. How to take care of your NATURALLY DYED CLOTHES 🤍 🌿 It is recommended to not overdo it when it comes to washing naturally dyed garments. An alternative to washing the whole piece could be to “spot clean”. For this, simply wet and clean the stain on your garment - not the whole piece. You can also hang your clothes in the fresh air outdoors instead of washing them. 👉️ Other than that, stick to the following instructions: 🤍 Turn your clothes inside out before beginning the washing process 🤍 Wash at 30 degrees, we recommend hand washing. 🤍 Use a PH-neutral (+ eco-friendly) washing detergent 🤍 Separate your laundry before washing! Slow-Made Tradition in Oaxaca - Part 1 💫 Simply put, we love cotton. 🙏 For us, it's an excellent fabric. Not only because it's natural, soft, durable, and easy to care for, but also because of the social aspect of it in Oaxaca. 🌵 Local cotton grows organically in shades of brown, white, and green. The cotton used in our baby bonnets, blankets, and Ruana Xipatlanis is native to the Costa Chica of Oaxaca and Guerrero; we use white and brown shades. The brown native cotton is called "Coyuchi." The cotton comes from 35 small producers from 12 coastal communities of Oaxaca. The farmers participate in a program for ecological production and the increase of biodiversity in their plots. 🌽 Corn is also known to be grown between the cotton plants. It is first picked by hand. 🖐️ When it arrives at our local village in the mountains, 200 women from the villages and ranches remove the seeds of cotton with their hands and then card and spin by using spinning wheels in their homes. 💞 Local carpenters reproduce the wheel designed by Gandhi so that each artisan has her own. Tlahuia Open Vests coming in 🧡 Both indigo and coyuchi striped. These raw materials are Oaxaca treasures, the indigo color coming from a native plant that has been used for centuries or longer, giving this rich deep connective blue found in ceremonia clothing and murals. The heirloom cotton coyuchi is brown in color, organically farmed and hand spun into thread on the coasts of Oaxaca. There's such a deep and rich history in the textile art of Oaxaca 💙 ..... Llegan los chalecos abiertos Tlahuia 🧡 Tanto con rayas de añil como coyuchi. Estas materias primas son tesoros de Oaxaca, el color índigo proviene de una planta nativa que se ha utilizado durante siglos o más, dando este rico azul profundo de conexión, que se encuentra en la vestimenta ceremonial y los murales. Oaxaca has been the cradle of the cochineal and it is present in textiles, handicrafts, murals and food. Cochineal was the most exported from Mexico during the 16th century, after gold and silver. This Mexican red is part of our history. At Antama, we flow with community base principles. Our artisan partners are self-organized from start to finish and when we team up we entwine the knowledge and tradition of all to the textiles. ⫸ MEET THE ARTISANS BEHIND Español en comentarios. Our seamstress Herminia García, by own words. We are originally from San Sebastian Rio Hondo Oaxaca, children of farmer parents and artisans. We love our work as it is a heritage from our fathers. The craftsmanship has always been a fundamental part of the families in our communities. We are a family of four; we have two children, a son and a daughter who we love very much. They are the ones who motivate us to move forward and just like our parents planted good principles in us, the same way we want it for our children. Like the love for nature and crafting. We also are teaching young couples of the community so that they learn this beautiful ancestral work as well. For us it is a pride when the people use the products that we create with so much love, as everything is made with our own hands and always inspired in the nature. When the people wear our artisan made clothing we know they are supporting the families to have a more dignified and equitable life. Español en comentarios. The cotton we use in our baby products and Ruana Xipatlanis is native to the Costa Chica of Oaxaca. The fabric is woven here on the mountains in San Sebastian Rio Hondo by the group Khadi Oaxaca who coordinate the production of heritage white and native coyuchi cotton (brown, pre-Hispanic) from 35 small producers in 12 coastal communities of Oaxaca. They promote and support the ancestral practice of intercropping cotton with corn and other edible plants (milpa). Traditional, small farmers participate as a means to supplement subsistence agriculture thus preserving native corn races as well. The farmers receive training and technical assistance in agro-ecological production to support the goals of soil conservation, regenerative fertility, increased biodiversity and farmer and community health. They do not irrigate nor use any agro-chemicals. They do use Integrated Pest Management and homemade biological inputs to reduce pest pressure and increase soil fertility. The group, N’un Ndito Tierra Viva (Mixteco for living earth), is on its way to becoming a self-supporting cooperative with a participatory organic production certificate. SPINNING Today, there are 250 women from San Sebastián and its surrounding homesteads, who remove the seeds and clean the cotton brought from the coast. They then card and spin it, all by hand, using spinning wheels in their homes. It takes up to a month for a woman to spin one kilo of thread. Local carpenters reproduce the spinning wheel (charka) designed by Gandhi so that each artisan has her own. Information from Khadi Oaxaca.
