❄️ 📍South Pole, Antarctice. Walking with you around the South Pole, Antarctica. This area is where arrivals and departures walk to get to and from the planes. The welcome sign greets you as you head towards the Elevated Station. I still remember the feeling of being at 10,000 feet for the first time and the sound of the crunching snow as I walked towards to Station for the first time on 16 November 2022. Now, after a year, it oddly feels kind of normal. While filming, the temperature was about -67F/-55C with light winds of 7.5mph/6.5 knots. Physio-altitude was roughly 10,500 feet or 3,200 meters. You could call this decent to good weather with some ice crystals and mist in the air. Who knew there were two impact zones within 500 miles of the Labrador Sea. Honestly, I choked up a few times on the plane as the reality of leaving sank in when the massive C-17 took off down the runway, off to Antarctica from Christchurch, New Zealand. What types of wildlife can you expect to see in Antarctica? Antarctica is one of the harshest environments on Earth, but there are so many different and fascinating animals you might see on your visit that have adapted to thrive. SO MANY PENGUINS! Antarctica is home to several species of penguins, including emperor, gentoo, adelie, chinstrap, and macaroni penguins. Plus when they slip on the ice while they are waddling around…it’s so cute that I want to cry. Various seal species inhabit the Antarctic waters and coastlines. Look out for leopard seals, Weddell seals, crabeater seals, and Ross seals. Seals can often be seen lounging on ice burgs floating on the surface. Keep an eye out for humpback whales, minke whales, orcas (killer whales), blue whales, and fin whales. It’s really exciting to spot a whale from the ship because as soon as you hear “WHALE,” everyone runs to the outside decks to get a look! Antarctica is a haven for seabirds. Albatrosses, petrels, skuas, and terns are commonly spotted soaring over the ocean or nesting along rocky cliffs. Antarctic fulmars and snow petrels are adapted to the extreme cold and can be seen flying near the continent. I love when they soar next to the boat and I can watch them from my balcony. While not large animals, krill form a crucial part of the Antarctic food web. These small crustaceans are a primary food source for many of the larger marine animals in the region, including whales and seals. Antarctic toothfish and icefish are among the fish species found in these waters. Which animals would you be most excited to see??

Snow and ice have blown in from other parts of the continent over the years, which is why you see the steep hill and drop off, the start of the drop marked by green flags.
