What types of wildlife can you expect to see in Antarctica? Antarctica is one of the harshest environments on Earth, but there are so many different and fascinating animals you might see on your visit that have adapted to thrive. SO MANY PENGUINS! Antarctica is home to several species of penguins, including emperor, gentoo, adelie, chinstrap, and macaroni penguins. Plus when they slip on the ice while they are waddling around…it’s so cute that I want to cry. Various seal species inhabit the Antarctic waters and coastlines. Look out for leopard seals, Weddell seals, crabeater seals, and Ross seals. Seals can often be seen lounging on ice burgs floating on the surface. Keep an eye out for humpback whales, minke whales, orcas (killer whales), blue whales, and fin whales. It’s really exciting to spot a whale from the ship because as soon as you hear “WHALE,” everyone runs to the outside decks to get a look! Antarctica is a haven for seabirds. Albatrosses, petrels, skuas, and terns are commonly spotted soaring over the ocean or nesting along rocky cliffs. Antarctic fulmars and snow petrels are adapted to the extreme cold and can be seen flying near the continent. I love when they soar next to the boat and I can watch them from my balcony. While not large animals, krill form a crucial part of the Antarctic food web. These small crustaceans are a primary food source for many of the larger marine animals in the region, including whales and seals. Antarctic toothfish and icefish are among the fish species found in these waters. Which animals would you be most excited to see??

Still, the stars (and aurora) are out and so is the full moon. It's bright enough to cast strong, visible shadows and (although we use them for safety), you don't need a head torch if the sky is clear. Note that the illumination in the photo is the opposite side to the setting sun! 📚 📚📚What This Week 📚📚📚 Inspired by @emmyh_reads recent post about unhauling her TBR and a lazy ANZAC Day afternoon with not much to do, I culled my TBR this week. These four shelves are it, rearranged back into genre piles so I’ve got a better chance of actually knowing what’s in there and less chance of accidentally buying books I’ve already got on there 😅 Most of the books on here were picked up second hand and I’m sending a lot back out into the wild again. READING I took my time finishing Washington Black for last month’s #historyclub read - better late than never! I tried the audiobook of David Grann’s The Wager but the narration wasn’t great for me so I read it with my eyeballs instead 😄 I also picked up Claire Keegan’s Antarctica but have only read one story as yet which was much darker than I was expecting - looking forward to more! LISTENING I’ve been on an audiobook bonanza this month, but put a few on pause to focus on just two. I finished Salman Rushdie’s Knife which was deeply moving and impactful. I’m also listening to Deep Water by James Bradley which is creating a mixture of awe for our oceans and the creatures who inhabit them and a deep grief for what is happening to them. WATCHING Not much lately but we did watch Rebel Moon Part 2 which was cool but not as cool as Part 1 imo. I also started Baby Reindeer but am only 2 episodes in. There’s a lot of chatter about it on therapy chat forums so I’m keen to finish it and see what I think.
