In November 2023 my book group read Siblings by Brigitte Reimann, a novel about a young woman in 1960 in East Berlin, trying to convince her older brother not to flee the GDR for the West. The book was first published in the GDR in 1963. I found it fascinating to read a book that was written & published in East Germany at that time and from the perspective of someone who was for the socialist regime. A few of my fellow book groupers felt that they lacked the knowledge of the history of the GDR to give Siblings context. Beyond the Wall: East Germany, 1949 - 1990 by Katja Hoyer is the perfect companion. A nice little selection of recent acquisitions and a little #penguinfo for your #penguinoledge SUNSHINE SKETCHES OF A LITTLE TOWN - 1944 New Zealand Edition To avoid transporting books across the seas at a time of war, when convoys were attacked and merchant ships sunk, some Penguin books were printed abroad, such as those in Australia. This also had the advantage of avoiding the paper rationing imposed in the UK. The books which survive seem to point to publishing between 1941 and 1945. TONO- BUNGAY - BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS edition BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS or BEA books. It is believed there are about 16 different titles but no full set I know to be owned. They are simple rebound books given out to passengers on BEA flights. It’s not know if they were given out to keep or to just read during the flight and given back. Digging Up The Past, Pelican - EVERYBODY’S RE-BOUND It is questionable whether every book ‘rebound’ by Everybody’s Books was ‘worth reading‘. What is not in dispute is the merit of salvaging paper at a time of shortage. The thinking seems to have been that at a time when reading was an important way of distracting people from the War, any means of giving damaged paperbacks a new lease of life was worth doing. Better to rebind a coverless book than print a new edition using paper which was a scarce resource. AN OUTLINE OF EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURE, Pelican EVT Educational and Vocational Training scheme or E.V.T. are clothbound Pelicans and Penguin books that were bound by Penguin. The war was all but won and now the issue of what future lay ahead for the hundreds of thousands of troops awaiting demobilization needed to be addressed. Retraining and educational courses were put in place and Penguin were one of the best placed publishers to provide material for the courses. These Pelicans were reissues of titles already published and sent to Forces libraries for reading and courses. ‼️jane eyre spoliers in the slides‼️ Another jane eyre update (hoping that by next week I’ll be done). I’m having fun with this book and I’m as you can see taking my time. But the ✨big secret✨ came out so much farther into the story than I expected it. Like the chapters leading up to the wedding just made me need because I knew that there would be a reveal. Also regarding Mr. Rochester, I still don’t like him lol, but I do empathise with him and his struggles and I don’t blame him in wanting to be happy. As for Jane, as much as I don’t agree with her decisions I still understand why she makes them and she does the things she does and why her love for Mr. Rochester is the way it is. I also really enjoyed her interaction with Mrs. Reed after all being away for so long and how much she had grown and matured and the fact that after all that happened she had forgiveness in her heart. Those are some of my ramblings and thoughts so far, can’t wait to finish it and give you guys a full review!

However, the constant mention of George being overweight throughout the story can become repetitive and distracting, not fitting for the overall plot. You guys know I absolutely adore sports romance, so I have been dying to read Monica Murphy’s college sports romance series! This book was really fun - if you like tutor/jock, good girl/bad boy, and boy obsessed, this one will totally be up your alley! Knox and Joanna were super sweet - their relationship build was really compelling, and I was obsessed with the Nathan and Haley/One Tree Hill vibes 🥹 This has all the hallmarks of a good college sports romance - fun dynamics between the football players, iconic sports scenes, steamy tutoring scenes, and so much more. Through this story, we gain insight into the social backdrop, familial dynamics, and survival challenges of post-war Singapore. Additionally, we witness the protagonist’s growth, his forging of new connections, and his quest for personal meaning. This book is not just entertaining, but children can learn history, develop character, fostering right values of life perspectives and cultivate a positive attitude towards life through enjoyable reading. The King’s Mother by Annie Garthwaite 2/5 ❤️❤️ This is due to be published on 11th July. Many thanks to Netgalley, for a free review copy, in exchange for my honest feedback. While I appreciate this is very well researched and well written, it is no Hilary Mantel. I felt I was reading about The War of the Roses era (House of York against House of Lancaster) through a kind of “Bridgerton” lens. It focuses on strong female characters scheming to arrange marriages and to exert influence from behind the scenes. It is a lengthy read, yet with so much focus on marriages and partnerships, I felt many of the characters (both male and female) were often one dimensional. They lack depth and do not holistically reflect the complexity of the high intensity politics of England in this period. They are narrowed down to schemes and manipulations, and we learn little of their intellectual or strategic motivations. Maybe that is a different story. I really wanted to like this more because of its shout out to powerful women in a patriarchal period, but these women often appear bitchy, self-serving, and power hungry showing little solidarity! This is the book pick for the months of March and April for The Game of Tomes bookclub hosted by the two most wonderful people: @emmie.reads and @carolynmariereads . 💖 It would have been a five-star if it was more concise and not as lengthy as it is. The sheer size of it was just unnecessary to me, but I understand why it's a classic because the overall story and message is universal and important. I was seated for the majority of it when I wasn't bored by the overboard flowery writing. 🙊🤷♀️ The things I liked about this book: 🤍 The female characters. The women in this book are all complex and realistically portrayed. I felt conflicted by some of the decisions they make but also in awe of how they handle it. 🤍 The development and yearning of some of the relationships were really heartbreaking and, at the same time, heartwarming to read about. The slow burn of Dorothea's relationship with Ladislaw and the deterioration of Rosamund's feelings for Lydgate were chef's kisses. 🤍 Small-town life!!! I really loved the atmosphere in this book and just read about the characters surviving small-town life and making life-changing decisions and how the hypocrisy of one person can come out and spread like wildfire. Everyone knows everyone and their business. Y no es que el tamaño de una historia sea la que le dé su valor, solo que al menos esta vez me pareció más una estrategia comercial para aprovechar la euforia del premio que realmente presentar el trabajo del autor. En fin, solo podre opinar mas sobre el trabajo del autor leyendo mas obras de el, así que acabo de comprar Septología, que dicen es su obra maestra.
