A fundraiser put on by local drag performers to help raise money for Palestinian children was forced to cancel last-minute after receiving threats from followers of the far-right social media account, Libs of TikTok. On Sat., March 16, the performers were slated to do a show at the bilingual bookstore Palabras, with the aim of raising awareness on the war inside the Gaza Strip and the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Money earned at the event was set to be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. But one day before the event, Libs of TikTok, an online social media account created and managed by anti-LGBTQ+ influencer Chaya Raichik, posted about the event on the social media platform, X. This is the third known time that a drag show in Arizona has been threatened by far-right conservatives. The first was in Feb. 2023 at Brick Road Coffee in Tempe, when a bomb threat shut down a story-reading hour. The Supreme Court said Thursday it will not allow Florida to enforce its new law targeting drag shows, while a court case proceeds. The justices refused to narrow a lower-court order that has prohibited the law from being enforced statewide. Florida had asked the court to allow its anti-drag show law to be enforced everywhere except at the Hamburger Mary’s restaurant in Orlando, which challenged the law’s constitutionality. Three justices, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas, said they would have granted the state’s request. Last month, a panel of the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s order stopping the law from being enforced. The district court found that the law likely restricted free speech and couldn’t be enforced anywhere in the state. Hamburger Mary’s regularly hosts drag shows, including family-friendly performances on Sundays that children are invited to attend. The restaurant’s owner said the law was overly broad, was written vaguely, and violated First Amendment rights by chilling speech. The new law championed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, punished venues for allowing children into what it called “adult live performances.” Though it did not mention drag shows specifically, the sponsor of the legislation said it was aimed at those performances. Venues that violated the law faced fines and the possibility that their liquor licenses to be suspended or revoked. Tennessee Senate Bill 3 has been called a drag ban, but drag isn’t mentioned anywhere in the law itself. As written, it prohibits “adult cabaret” and refers to drag performers as “male or female impersonators.” The restrictions were set to go into effect April 1. RuPaul’s Drag Race Stars Stand Against Anti-Trans and Anti-Drag Legislation 👠 The stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race are united in a call for action in response to recent anti-trans and anti-drag legislation. As of this February, over 300 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in state legislative courts this year. Many of them target drag performances and gender-affirming care. In Tennessee and Montana, minors are banned from drag performances. Also in Tennessee, minors are not allowed to receive transition-related medical care. None of this is particularly surprising given that the GOP has devoted itself to convincing people that drag performers are all dangerous predators, thus riling up their voters and causing legislators to pass restrictions and bans upon drag shows. On top of this, acts of anti-LGBTQ violence is still on the rise in the country, forcing high-profile drag queens to take extra security precautions. To boost morale, members of RuPaul’s Drag Race shared some powerful messages during the show’s 200th episode celebration. “It’s wild to see what’s going on as all these anti-trans bills (are) being disguised as anti-drag bills,” says Sasha Colby, a legend in the drag community who is competing on the show’s 15th Season. “You know what we’re not gonna do? We’re not gonna let them take us down. We’re going to keep doing what we need to do. Because you know what? In the 1940s, '50s and '60s, police arrested LGBTQ people based on an informal "three-article" rule. The Stonewall Riots helped turn the tide against these arrests. In LGBTQ circles around the country, this was known as the three-article rule—or the three-piece law. It was referenced everywhere—including in reports about arrests in Greenwich Village in the weeks and months leading up to the 1969 Stonewall Riots. The problem is, the law technically never existed. Instead, accounts suggest that police generally used old, often unrelated laws to target LGBT people throughout the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Masquerade Laws Revived to Target LGBTQ Laws criminalizing cross-dressing spread like wildfire around the United States in the mid-19th century. New York’s, dating back to 1845, was one of the oldest. It declared it a crime to have your “face painted, discolored, covered, or concealed, or [be] otherwise disguised… [while] in a road or public highway.” Existing laws against costumed dress, even if they didn’t specifically mention cross dressing—collectively referred to as “masquerade laws”—were increasingly pressed into service around the country to punish gender variance. That these laws were often ill-suited to the task didn’t matter. In Brooklyn in 1913, for instance, a person who we would today call a transgender man was arrested for “masquerading in men’s clothes,” smoking and drinking in a bar. When the magistrate noted that the state’s masquerade law was intended only to criminalize costumed dress used as a cover for another crime, the police were forced to let the man go.
