Sculpture Materials: Steel or Wood?🛠️ JOHN PAI (b.1937) & KIM YUN SHIN (b.1935) – TWO VISIONARY KOREAN ARTISTS CELEBRATED BY NEW YORK THIS SPRING!👥 This spring, New York showcased the distinctive artistic styles of contemporaries John Pai and Kim Yun Shin, both visionaries born in the mid-1930s and still active today. John Pai’s steel sculptures and dynamic drawings were featured at @kccny, while Kim Yun Shin’s work in wood and vivid paintings were on display at @lehmanmaupin. Though these exhibitions have closed, their influence lingers, highlighting the parallelism between the artists’ choice of sculpture materials and their influence on their two-dimensional works. The stark contrast in the materials and styles of their sculptures and drawings underscores their unique artistic expressions. 🔸Kim Yun Shin, one of the first Korean women formally educated in sculpture, now 88, also graces this year’s main exhibition at the Venice Biennale. Book of Longing, a poetry book published in 2006, is the work of Canadian poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Cohen’s creations frankly and genuinely reveal desires and the self, often infused with his wit. Book of Longing seems to be a summary of his self-interpretation, reviewing the nourishment that pain and desire have provided him throughout his life. Employing imagination, Cohen attempts to delve into the inner world, reconfiguring his relationship with the world. In the second half of Book of Longing, he imagines a “she”, with whom he has a mysterious and fated encounter. Co-Producer / Director 聯合監製／導演 Mo Lai Yan Chi 賴恩慈 Theatre and Film director, scriptwriter, actor and educator An awardee of Ten Outstanding Young Person and the winner of Young Artist (Film) of HK Arts Development Awards. Mo is now appointed project director at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She is the artistic director of Mo Production Company Limited and guest senior lecturer at different universities. Her solo ‘Women in Red’ was staged at the HK Queen Elizabeth Stadium and was the opening performance at the International Community Arts Festival in the Netherlands. Her solo ‘The White Shadow’ was selected for the San Francisco International Arts Festival. She was funded by West Kowloon District Authority and HK Arts Development Council to conduct research on performance in public spaces in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and London under the Overseas Research Programme for Leaders from Local Arts Groups on Future Arts Development in HK. Her film ‘1+1’ won The Gold Award in IFVA and Best Film Award at Fresh Wave International Film Festival, also entered Udine Far East Film Festival and Vancouver International Film Festival. Film ‘N+N’ entered HK Asian Film Festival. From the 2023/2024 season, Ip was appointed Associate Conductor of Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Ip has guest conducted at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Musica Viva Hong Kong, Hong Kong Grand Opera, and was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 2016–2018. Movement Artist 形體藝術家 Leung Hoi Yee Alysa 梁海頤 Alysa is an artist and dramaturg based in Hong Kong, travelling between Asia and Europe. She graduated with an M.A. in Contemporary Theatre, Dance, and Dramaturgy from Utrecht University and a Bachelor of Communication (Hons) from HKBU. Baritone 男中音 Caleb Woo 胡永正 Lyric Baritone Caleb Woo’s recent performances include the Hong Kong Arts Festival production ‘Por Por’ by Austin Yip, ‘Women like Us’ by Daniel Lo, the award-winning Opera ‘Angel’s Bone’ produced by the New Vision Arts Festival and the Beijing Music Festival; and original Operas composed by Chan Hing-yan, ‘the Heart of Coral and Datong’. Tenor 男高音 David Quah 柯大衛 Winner of the coveted Marianne Mathy Australian Singing Competition, Malaysian-born David Quah moved to Hong Kong in 2000 and started teaching singing at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Bel Canto Singers Foundation. Versatile in a wide range of repertoire including classical music, musical, Chinese folk songs and contemporary music, Quah has premiered many operatic roles both locally and overseas. Mezzo-soprano 女中音 Samatha Chong 張吟晶 Mezzo-soprano Samantha Chong is the winner of the inaugural ASEAN Vocal competition and the 1st prize winner of the 41st National Singing Competition of Malaysia in 2015. Post graduation, she jump started her career as a soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Hong Kong, Musica Viva and Global Symphony Orchestra. Samantha made her Italian debut in 2019 with Teatro Petruzzelli, singing Rosina in ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’. Recently, she performed at the opening concert of Edinburgh International Festival, singing Tan Dun’s ‘Buddha’s Passion’. Soprano 女高音 Athene Mok 莫子慧 Hong Kong soprano, Athene Tsz Wai Mok has performed in Taipei, the United States, Hong Kong, Toronto and Tel Aviv. She appeared as Ah Fei in the premiere of ‘Kungfood’ (2023), and as Xiao Hong in the 2023 Hong Kong Art Festival’s dance opera Love Streams. Her other operatic appearances include Poppea and Valletto in ‘L’incoronazione di Poppea’, La Fée in ‘Cendrillo’n’, etc. Athene received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. 【Choose how to open “Book of Longing” 請選擇如何打開《渴望之書》】 The audience area is divided into Area X and Y. Audience Area X is located within the performing area. There will be some interaction with the actors. You experience the show from a first-person perspective, immersing in the spiritual practise of Leonard Cohen. The seats are cushions on elevated landscape. Your ticket allows you to pick your seat freely within the area. For the best stage effect, you need to store your belongings (except valuables) in the cloakroom before entering the Box. Audience Area Y is located outside the performing area. You experience the show from a third-person perspective as an onlooker.
