As an aficionado of interdisciplinary collaboration, Glass particularly advises aspiring artists to seek collaborators of similar age. He remarked, ”Leonard Cohen and I belong to the same generation, thus enabling us to grow together and pioneer an era.“ At that time, after waiting for Cohen to complete a five-year spiritual journey, he reached out to Cohen, facilitating such a cross-disciplinary collaboration. The Hong Kong premiere of The Book of Longing features a distinctive cross-boundary collaboration. Book of Longing, a poetry book published in 2006, is the work of Canadian poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Cohen’s creations frankly and genuinely reveal desires and the self, often infused with his wit. Book of Longing seems to be a summary of his self-interpretation, reviewing the nourishment that pain and desire have provided him throughout his life. Employing imagination, Cohen attempts to delve into the inner world, reconfiguring his relationship with the world. In the second half of Book of Longing, he imagines a “she”, with whom he has a mysterious and fated encounter. Co-Artistic Director / Solo Violin 聯合藝術總監／小提琴 Nina Wong 王倩兒 Nina graduated from Bard College Conservatory of Music and Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and is an international prize-winning violinist who has performed as a soloist and ensemble musician in the US, Europe, Mainland China and Hong Kong. Co-Producer / Director 聯合監製／導演 Mo Lai Yan Chi 賴恩慈 Theatre and Film director, scriptwriter, actor and educator An awardee of Ten Outstanding Young Person and the winner of Young Artist (Film) of HK Arts Development Awards. Mo is now appointed project director at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She is the artistic director of Mo Production Company Limited and guest senior lecturer at different universities. Her solo ‘Women in Red’ was staged at the HK Queen Elizabeth Stadium and was the opening performance at the International Community Arts Festival in the Netherlands. Her solo ‘The White Shadow’ was selected for the San Francisco International Arts Festival. She was funded by West Kowloon District Authority and HK Arts Development Council to conduct research on performance in public spaces in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and London under the Overseas Research Programme for Leaders from Local Arts Groups on Future Arts Development in HK. Her film ‘1+1’ won The Gold Award in IFVA and Best Film Award at Fresh Wave International Film Festival, also entered Udine Far East Film Festival and Vancouver International Film Festival. Film ‘N+N’ entered HK Asian Film Festival. From the 2023/2024 season, Ip was appointed Associate Conductor of Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Ip has guest conducted at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Musica Viva Hong Kong, Hong Kong Grand Opera, and was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 2016–2018. Movement Artist 形體藝術家 Leung Hoi Yee Alysa 梁海頤 Alysa is an artist and dramaturg based in Hong Kong, travelling between Asia and Europe. She graduated with an M.A. in Contemporary Theatre, Dance, and Dramaturgy from Utrecht University and a Bachelor of Communication (Hons) from HKBU. Tenor 男高音 David Quah 柯大衛 Winner of the coveted Marianne Mathy Australian Singing Competition, Malaysian-born David Quah moved to Hong Kong in 2000 and started teaching singing at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Bel Canto Singers Foundation. Versatile in a wide range of repertoire including classical music, musical, Chinese folk songs and contemporary music, Quah has premiered many operatic roles both locally and overseas. Mezzo-soprano 女中音 Samatha Chong 張吟晶 Mezzo-soprano Samantha Chong is the winner of the inaugural ASEAN Vocal competition and the 1st prize winner of the 41st National Singing Competition of Malaysia in 2015. Post graduation, she jump started her career as a soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Hong Kong, Musica Viva and Global Symphony Orchestra. Samantha made her Italian debut in 2019 with Teatro Petruzzelli, singing Rosina in ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’. Recently, she performed at the opening concert of Edinburgh International Festival, singing Tan Dun’s ‘Buddha’s Passion’. Soprano 女高音 Athene Mok 莫子慧 Hong Kong soprano, Athene Tsz Wai Mok has performed in Taipei, the United States, Hong Kong, Toronto and Tel Aviv. She appeared as Ah Fei in the premiere of ‘Kungfood’ (2023), and as Xiao Hong in the 2023 Hong Kong Art Festival’s dance opera Love Streams. Her other operatic appearances include Poppea and Valletto in ‘L’incoronazione di Poppea’, La Fée in ‘Cendrillo’n’, etc. Athene received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. 【Choose how to open “Book of Longing” 請選擇如何打開《渴望之書》】 The audience area is divided into Area X and Y. Audience Area X is located within the performing area. There will be some interaction with the actors. You experience the show from a first-person perspective, immersing in the spiritual practise of Leonard Cohen. The seats are cushions on elevated landscape. Your ticket allows you to pick your seat freely within the area. For the best stage effect, you need to store your belongings (except valuables) in the cloakroom before entering the Box. Audience Area Y is located outside the performing area. You experience the show from a third-person perspective as an onlooker. Done ✅ Enjoyed it! Another surprise for me. This is nothing I would’ve ever picked up, let alone read, but I saw @lexmbs mention it and I put it on hold at the library. It’s a story of Ana, a young woman born to a wealthy family who dares to use her voice and follows her desire to learn to read and write. Using those skills she records the stories of the women around her who were often controlled, abused, silenced and erased from the narrative. And then she meets Jesus when he is only 18 years old. The story follows along as they fall in love and get married and goes from there. I’ve never imagined Jesus before he was…Jesus. Was he married and his wife erased from the narrative? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sue Monk Kidd’s impeccably researched, historical fiction brings depth and nuance to the time period, land, and people during Jesus’s life. The Book of Longing tells the story of Ana, a girl born into wealth with a prayer of longing in her heart, who becomes the wife of Jesus. She is a strong, feminine, scholarly woman with a desire to have a Voice. Several quotes in the book fluttered in my heart, all but one of them came from Ana’s fictitious aunt, her spiritual guide. “Your moment will come, and when it does, you must seize it with all the bravery you can find.” This speaks to the fact that in all our lives we come upon many opportunities. Depending on our commitment to growth and spiritual development, we may or may not seize those opportunities. At the age of 14, Ana starts to experience visions and other psychic abilities. As an intuitive myself, I loved how the author weaved in the metaphysical world. Jesus was, afterall, a miracle worker and visionary. “Your vision means what you want it to mean. It will mean what you make it to mean.” In one of their conversations, Jesus laments about the corrupt priests in the temples and Ana exclaims, “Can he not live everywhere?” Jesus laughs and replies, “I think for you, too, God cannot be contained.” “When I tell you all shall be well, I don’t mean that life won’t bring you tragedy. Life will be life. I only mean you will be well in spite of it. All shall be well, no matter what.” This speaks to the inviolate part within all of us, our Soul, our Deep Knowing. Things that you may label as “bad” are going to happen, but you will be okay. “You think with your head. You know with your heart.” Again, your thoughts come from your intellect and ego-mind. Your intuition and Knowing come from your heart and capacity for True Love. “We all have some largeness in us…what most sets you apart is the spirit in you that rebels and persists. What are some books you did not finish? I sometimes struggle to DNF a book, but over the years I’ve learned to let go of the anxiety of leaving something unfinished and instead think, “This book it not vibing with me right now and I’ll give it another time in the future”. I’ve learned that reading is supposed to be fun and it’s not fun if I’m pushing myself to read a book that I’m not loving- it ends up with me in a reading rut.
