Dance is the inspiration for my art. I cannot say when I first fell in love with dance. There is not a significant event I can pinpoint that made me decide to be a dancer. I started taking dance classes at the age of five and by the time I was fourteen dancing was an integral part of me. So much so that I could not and can not imagine life without dance. Dance simply became a part of me, such a part of me that not enjoying it now leaves a huge, empty void. It doesn’t take away the wonderful memories and maybe more importantly the feeling of being a dancer. The memories and feelings are my inspiration for the artwork I create with images of dancers. I was lucky to have dance in my life. It became my place of refuge from the rest of my life. When I needed it most, I found security within the walls of the studio and escape from reality on the stage. During performances, during the brief time I was on stage, I liked who I was and what I could do. As an adolescent I didn’t recognize how important dance was to my mental and emotional health. But I came to understand the important role during it played during this critical period of my life and is a major reason I like to teach dance. The positive influences of dance during my youth gave me the chance to learn and grow in ways I otherwise would not have. I’m an artistic, sensitive soul that finds it easier to speak to others through my brushstrokes of movement and now paint wants to devote my life to helping others discover the self-expressive power of art. How many WIP (Works in Progress) do you have going at any given time? I usually have several if not many. (Not to get too specific 🤣) Since I paint a lot at the playground while the girls are playing, I try to keep some small drawings ready to paint—drawing new ones during smaller chunks of time while working on some paintings in the longer chunks of time or better weather. Where I create? #aprilforartists2024 I’ve had all kinds of art “studios” including a living room tv tray with a cat who regularly drank, and spilled, my paint water. My current art studio setup, while small, is one of my best with amazing light (and still in my bedroom.) I made it so there is space for the girls to make art alongside me and I treasure our early morning art sessions together. I learned art making skills from lots of places. But talent only takes you so far. I learned to love art from my grandmother, in addition to fundamental artistic skills I will never forget. I have been so fortunate to build on those first skills throughout my life starting as a junior in high school, as a Utah Sterling Scholar, @petersenartcenter, @universityofutah, @brighamyounguniversity, @svanyc School of Visual Arts, and @artstudentsleague the Art Students League of New York City. I’ve had day jobs that supported my art but I’ve had tenacity and encouragement. Thank you to @laurelrea and Sharee Lane for encouraging me to study art while I was dancing in NYC, for my beloved Grandmother whose watercolor self-portrait is part of this post, and especially to my mother.
