Since 1966, #UniqueUrn has made pottery art urns called Bencharong which consists of the history of hand-painted porcelain originating from Ming Dynasty China. “Bencharong” literally means “Five Colors” but means multi-colored ware or may signify the five elements of nature; water mixed with earth produces clay and wood ignites making a fire to harden clay to become ceramics. The colors are mineral over-glaze on polychromed porcelain. The firing takes 10 hours at 750-800°C. The finished result is a glass matrix enamel that resists fading, staining, or scratching. Bencharongware can be recognized by its distinctive features: 1. The densely delicate patterns are symmetrically based on geometry and generally cover the entire surface. 2. It is enameled with relief glaze, emphasizing background color, whereas Chinese porcelain is thinly painted and never emphasizes background color. 3. Dazzling use of lavish gold which represents prosperity. 4. Patterns include Thai motifs with meaning wishes, such as tropical flowers, plants, and flames, as well as mythological and cultural symbols. In the 13th-18th Century, Bencharongware was made exclusively for the Royal Court for entertaining foreign dignitaries and the elite. In later years it was sought by aristocrats and wealthy merchants. Today, people of all nationalities use it for special occasions. The new design grew as “Lai Nam Thong” used real gold as its distinctive color for elegant pieces with very popular in the reign of King Rama II (1809-1824). Today, the original Bencharong is displayed at the Thai National Museum, in Bangkok. This is a custom solid Oak Memorial Box. This one was for a client whose beautiful Patterdale Terrier, named Oz, Passed away peacefully. My client asked that it be large enough to accommodate his best friends ashes, and also a few of Oz's personal and favourite belongings. He also requested his name be engraved on the lid. Once everything is placed inside, the box is sealed with four solid brass screws. This way there is no risk of the lid ever slipping off and accidents occurring. I built a couple of pine and cedar urns for a friend. While I was at it I built an extra one. I left it unfinished if someone wanted to do laser engraving on the lid. The miter lock corners are cool because it makes the box almost look like a solid block of wood. The bottom is held on with screws so that the remains can be securely closed in the box. If you need an urn, I have one ready to go. The porcelain has to be built by hand or molds and then fired at 800° for around 6 hours with skill. The fired clay biscuit must coat and re-fire at 1280° for about 10-12 hours, so the baked clay biscuit finishes in durable whiteware. 2. The whiteware has to draw the circular guidelines by brushing on a turning wheel to separate space for each design section. After that has to draw the detail of each design with liquid 18ct gold which is put in the syringe pen. This drawing process requires high carefulness and skillfulness of the initial Thai pattern knowledge, which is drawn crucial to how the design will look, so it is done by our craftsmen with the experience to create a masterpiece of product. 3. The mineral colors are crushed and mixed with water, then painted by filling colors into each tiny cell between the golden lines that require carefulness and exquisite workmanship from the artisans. 4. After the applied color finish, the piece has to roll the rim of the top and base with the gold brush to ensure the details. 5. The piece has to finally be fired at 750-800° for about 10 hours which has to continue to take care of controlling the temperature over the night by professional craftsmen then the glaze becomes an enamel glass matrix that is resistant to scratching, fading, and permanent as well as the colors become bright, fresh, and charming. This sophisticated processing is a needed skill from only small communities of Thai artisans who have passed down the knowledge from generation to generation. With many years of experience in this field, We have produced the finest quality products using exquisite techniques by gifted craftsmen, so each product is glamorous and considered a masterpiece for our loved ones. . Since 1966, #UniqueUrn has made pottery art urns called Bencharong which consists of the history of hand-painted porcelain originating from Ming Dynasty China. “Bencharong” literally means “Five Colors” but means multi-colored ware or may signify the five elements of nature; water mixed with earth produces clay and wood ignites making a fire to harden clay to become ceramics. The colors are mineral over-glaze on polychromed porcelain. The firing takes 10 hours at 750-800°C. The finished result is a glass matrix enamel that resists fading, staining, or scratching. Bencharongware can be recognized by its distinctive features: 1. The densely delicate patterns are symmetrically based on geometry and generally cover the entire surface. 2. It is enameled with relief glaze, emphasizing background color, whereas Chinese porcelain is thinly painted and never emphasizes background color. 3. Dazzling use of lavish gold which represents prosperity. 4. Patterns include Thai motifs with meaning wishes, such as tropical flowers, plants, and flames, as well as mythological and cultural symbols. In the 13th-18th Century, Bencharongware was made exclusively for the Royal Court for entertaining foreign dignitaries and the elite. In later years it was sought by aristocrats and wealthy merchants. Today, people of all nationalities use it for special occasions. The new design grew as “Lai Nam Thong” used real gold as its distinctive color for elegant pieces with very popular in the reign of King Rama II (1809-1824). Today, the original Bencharong is displayed at the Thai National Museum, in Bangkok. For over 50 years in this field, UniqueUrn gathered together the finest artisans to use techniques developed from the 18th century to produce instant museum collectible pieces and we are vigilant with the strict use of quality materials in various as Thai porcelain, Bone China, and Celadon.
