High priests blessing officials at the Royal Cremation Ceremony in Ubud. 🪷 I stood there utterly entranced, watching the intricacies involved. When the priests were facing the 25 meter tower, they rang bells, chanted prayers and flicked water into the space in front of them, using plumeria flower petals. 🌺 Closer to the procession beginning, high officials gathered behind the priests. They turned and began blessing this crowd, sprinkling water, smoke and words. I was lucky enough to be standing right beside this altar for the entirety that the priests were present. Squished in like a sardine, being stepped on, having my face bashed by the tourists elbow standing in front of me, and having my glasses knocked off, all part of the experience. 😝 At this point I was almost fainting from the heat, stagnant air and non-movement. As soon as I could, I escaped this area and sat down on the dirty pavement to put my head between my legs. I stayed like that, with the crowd milling all around me, for a good 10 minutes. No one spoke to me. One of the most unique funeral customs in Madagascar is “Famadihana,” also known as the turning of the bones. This ritual, practiced by the Malagasy people, involves exhuming the remains of deceased relatives, wrapping them in fresh cloth, and dancing with the corpses in a joyous celebration of remembrance and ancestral connections. 2. Elaborate tombs are constructed to house the remains of ancestors. These tombs, called “fady,” can be intricate structures made of stone or wood, often adorned with carvings and decorations. Families take great pride in maintaining and beautifying these tombs, which serve as important cultural landmarks. 3. The duration of mourning can vary depending on the social status of the deceased and regional customs. Mourning periods can range from several days to several months, during which family members wear black clothing and observe rituals to honour the departed. 4. Among the Antemoro ethnic group in Madagascar, special paper known as “Antemoro paper” is used for funeral rituals.
