The colors are mineral over-glaze on polychromed porcelain. The firing takes 10 hours at 750-800°C. The finished result is a glass matrix enamel that resists fading, staining, or scratching. Bencharongware can be recognized by its distinctive features: 1. The densely delicate patterns are symmetrically based on geometry and generally cover the entire surface. 2. It is enameled with relief glaze, emphasizing background color, whereas Chinese porcelain is thinly painted and never emphasizes background color. 3. Dazzling use of lavish gold which represents prosperity. 4. Patterns include Thai motifs with meaning wishes, such as tropical flowers, plants, and flames, as well as mythological and cultural symbols. In the 13th-18th Century, Bencharongware was made exclusively for the Royal Court for entertaining foreign dignitaries and the elite. In later years it was sought by aristocrats and wealthy merchants. Today, people of all nationalities use it for special occasions. The new design grew as “Lai Nam Thong” used real gold as its distinctive color for elegant pieces with very popular in the reign of King Rama II (1809-1824). Today, the original Bencharong is displayed at the Thai National Museum, in Bangkok.
