Lasers have been in use ever since, to both save and correct sight among infants born premature, babies, teenagers, adults and seniors, across a range of sub-specialities. Light, particularly lasers, has revolutionized medicine, offering minimal invasive and precision surgeries, across specialities. In ophthalmology, lasers harness the power of light to correct vision, remove tumours and treat an array of eye conditions - Retinopathy of Prematurity(ROP), myopia, cataract and retinal diseases, glaucoma management, among others. Every year on May 16th, the world comes together to celebrate International Day of Light, an initiative by @unesco. When Mafunasi (85) was blinded by cataracts, she couldn’t fetch water for her family anymore. She said, “Even coming out of my house was like a long journey.” Mafunasi was not alone: today, more than 20 million women in the world are blind. This wonderful lady knew treatment was out there, but she couldn’t afford to get there. When she heard about a local CBM outreach screening she grasped the opportunity. A gift that will keep on giving! 🎁 Thank you to our long-term partner, the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (IRO), for helping to successfully complete 70 cataract surgeries in the mountainous region of La Libertad, Peru. 🇵🇪 Funded by John E. and Sheryl M. Downing Charitable Fund, this special project focused on patients over 65 years of age who were referred from the Leoncio Prado Hospital in Huamachuco, Peru. The objective of the Downing family-funded campaign was to carry out treatment for blinding cataracts — one of the most common and significant causes of vision loss in a context where it is difficult to access specialized eye care services due to geographical, economic, and cultural reasons. When Estifanos was just three months old, he was infected with trachoma. Trachoma is a painful, blinding eye disease that can cause permanent damage to a child's sight if left untreated.👀 🇪🇹 In rural areas of Ethiopia, it’s estimated that 40% of children under the age of nine have an active trachoma infection. Fortunately, an Orbis-trained healthcare worker visited Estifanos' village and screened him for trachoma. The healthcare worker also provided Estifanos' mother, Zuriyash, with an antibiotic eye ointment to treat her son's infection. Thanks to the healthcare worker's timely intervention, Estifanos received the treatment he needed to prevent permanent damage to his sight.💙 Thank you to everyone who supported us in 2023. BLINDNESS & VISION IMPAIRMENT -KEY FACTS: Globally, at least 2.2 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment. In at least 1 billion of these, vision impairment could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed. The leading causes of vision impairment and blindness at a global level are refractive errors and cataracts. It is estimated that globally only 36% of people with a distance vision impairment due to refractive error and only 17% of people with vision impairment due to cataract have received access to an appropriate intervention. Vision impairment poses an enormous global financial burden, with the annual global cost of productivity estimated to be US$ 411 billion. Vision loss can affect people of all ages; however, most people with vision impairment and blindness are over the age of 50 years. The smiles say it all. ♥️ Mamta and Ganit are siblings who nearly lost their vision permanently to congenital cataracts. But thanks to the Orbis global community, they were examined at a vision center in Bidupur, in east India, and treated successfully at our partner eye hospital, Akhand Jyoti. Even though the family had to travel over 30 miles to receive the surgeries, the hospital field staff assisted them in making the journey. Fikir caught trachoma as a child and struggled as her symptoms got worse. She would regularly have to pluck her eyelashes to stop them from scratching her eye. Thankfully, Fikir had surgery to reverse the damage caused by trachoma. She can now look forward to a future of healthy sight free from pain. In the first picture, Fikir was about to get her stitches removed. She told us that her two children are showing signs of trachoma, but she now knows how to get them treated. “I don’t want to see anyone suffer from this pain ever again so I will be happy to see trachoma gone.” Trachoma is an infectious eye disease and one of the leading causes of vision loss globally. She had the privilege of joining the dedicated team at a local school, where teachers were undergoing training to conduct vital eye screenings. Witnessing this initiative in action was truly heartwarming. Our team also visited another school, where they observed eye screenings for children. It's moments like these that remind us of the profound impact our work can have on young lives. According to published reports, young children with early onset irreversible severe vision impairment can experience delayed motor, language, emotional, social, and cognitive development, with lifelong consequences. Our hospital at araria serves the population of north east Bihar which is flood prone area and the climate is adversely affecting our outreach services and life of our patients. Soaring high temperatures in month of October and flood effects agriculture and livelihood of population. Recycling of consumables, water conservation, minimising electric consumption, using public transportation even for hospital work are some area we have worked upon .
