We're ending our week's focus on preservation being the key to sustainability with this final note. We often hear that historic buildings aren't energy efficient and should be replaced with something "more sustainable." However, the facts simply do not support this. A new, "green", energy-efficient office building that includes as much as 40 percent recycled materials would take approximately 65 years to recover the energy lost in demolishing a comparable existing building. This is because new construction is a carbon-intensive part of a building's life cycle - the carbon emissions from clearing the land or existing structure, as well as the production and transport of materials required for construction, are immense. The answer to a more sustainable future is the preservation and rehabilitation of our existing building stock, most of which have already recovered their "embodied energy." They're inherently more sustainable. So let's continue to utilize our existing buildings while encouraging new uses when necessary. statistics via the @epagov
