Welcome home to a pair of swallows who arrived back to a wet and windy Ballyvolane House last Sunday. They travelled 14,000km from South Africa and they arrived three days earlier than last year. They nest in our old farm sheds which are the perfect habitat for breeding swallows. They are like old friends and we love seeing them back here fizzing about hunting insects. These old photos of Big Bertha and her owner Jerome O'Leary were taken by Jill Smith in the late 1980's. We met Jill at the launch of the Droimeann Cattle Society Herd Book was held at @ballyvolanehouse back in 2018. It is the first cattle breed to be recognised in Ireland since 1927. The society are doing really important work to help preserve one of the rarest of the Irish rare-breeds. Jill farmed in Carrigaline in Co. Cork and had a herd of much loved Droimeanns. When she retired in 2018, she couldn't bear to send the cows for slaughter and instead, she raised money through a crowdfunding platform and had them all shipped to the Hillside animal sanctuary in Norfolk. Remarkable woman! Bertha’s Revenge Gin is named after the most famous Droimeann of them all - Big Bertha, the world’s oldest cow. Fittingly, our distillery is located in an old cow shed in the farmyard at Ballyvolane. Ballyvolane translates from gaelic as ‘the place of leaping heifers’. We raise a glass to Jill. Thursday, 16th November marks 'Guinness World Records Day'. When she died on New Year’s Eve 1993, just 3 months shy of her 49th birthday, she had become something of a local celebrity. Over the course of her long life she had given birth to 39 calves, and this achievement, together with her tremendous age, had earned her an entry in the @guinnessworldrecords. When we were thinking of a name for our gin we wanted to find something that was eye-catching, distinctive and that dovetailed with the pedigree of what are working with and what we have set out to achieve. The dairy farming heritage of @ballyvolanehouse, our use of whey alcohol in the gin, and our shared love of the gorgeous and gentle characters that can be found only in Ireland led us back to Bertha. To immortalise her memory, we have brought her back in spirit, literally!! Bertha's Revenge Crab Apple Gin Crab Apples are attractive to look at, but those rosy ripe skin hues hide a flesh that can be wincingly sour. We age our fruit with Bertha's Revenge Gin for a number of months, and then filter before adding some jaggery cane sugar syrup and cloves prior to bottling. The crab apples are supplied by our friend David Keane, an apple grower from nearby Cappoquin. His crab apple trees are excellent pollinators for his apple orchards due to the long flowering time. Some of the crab apples also come from our own gardens at @ballyvolanehouse. We have developed Bertha’s Revenge Crab Apple Gin Liqueur to be both a supporting band member as well as a solo artist on the drinks stage; she can be enjoyed neat or is an excellent base for a warming winter cocktail like a spiced gin and apple punch. Flowers on stage and flowers in the rafters. A fun, special and meaningful ceremony install for that wonderful wedding we flowered for B+A at @connollysofleap in West Cork... two weeks ago. We filled stone vessels with seasonal florals as well as meadows and living plant, we had florals and grasses pouring over the rafters. The ceremony was small and intimate.
